Directed by Jeff Hare
While covering a story in a remote Brazilian rainforest, television journalist Ann Baurer (Gabrielle Anwar) stumbles all too literally on greedy Dr. North's (David Naughton) secret experiment: Raise genetically mutated bees and sell their venom's healing properties as medicine. But the bees contain a deadly, fast-acting virus, and North has shipped several cases of the live insects onto a passenger jet headed for -- gulp! -- New York City. Luckily, Ann's soon-to-be-ex-husband Marty (Craig Sheffer) is on the plane. Unluckily, back in Brazil, crazed terrorist Mr. Ezekial (Rutger Hauer) and his helicopter-borne army are intent on wiping out the Shadow People tribe of Indians to keep the bees for himself. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

A fine cast, a decent budget, glorious scenery and pretty good production values are squandered on this sometimes-insane creature feature. Hewing very closely to the formula popularized by prolific B-movie director Jim Wynorski, Killer Buzz looks bright and shiny, seems competently acted, has a bit of depth (in this case, the emotions of the estranged couple) and moves at a brisk-enough pace. But in the end, there is little that hasn't been seen already, few genuine thrills and some scenes that, upon reflection, are out-loud laughable (in this case, Marty is sucked out of a jumbo jet when the door opens and he dangles from a rope outside at 45,000 feet, only to be rescued by a high school boy and the door closed behind them by a flight attendant who pulls it shut without even ruffling her hair). Many, many thatched roof huts are blown to splinters and many, many bullets are shot, but the action is empty. Craig Sheffer and Rutger Hauer know how silly it all is and seem to be stifling laughs as they recite their dialogue; Gabrielle Anwar takes it a bit too seriously, but if not for her gravity, Killer Buzz would have been a comedy. Hey wait -- that explains the man-eating crocodile, the anger-challenged flight attendant, and the heavily armed gang that stop the car that's right in front of them. It is to laugh. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide
