"Next week, Vin Diesel returns (along with Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordanna Brewster) to the Fast and the Furious franchise, which he’d abandoned after the first movie (he did have a cameo in part 3). When news first hit that he’d be reprising the role of Dominic Toretto for the fourth installment, simply titled Fast & Furious, most of us saw the actor as returning under a veil of shame. Because he initially departed the series with an inflated ego — and with it unrealistic salary demands — it does seem obvious that Diesel is now only desperately crawling back because his career failed to take off the way he’d hoped it would. This is quite sad considering not even Steve Guttenberg ever crawled back to the [More]

"What's the AFI Project, you ask? For more information, or if you just enjoy my bemused ramblings, read here: http://www.spout.com/blogs/pip pin06/archive/2008/3/1/25756.a spx Jaws is on the following AFI lists: The Original Top 100 (#48)100 Most Heart-Pounding Movies (#2)100 Years...100 Heroes and Villains (The Shark is the #18 villain)100 Movie Quotes (#35 - Chief Martin Brody: "You're gonna need a bigger boat.")25 Film Scores (#6)The Revised Top 100 (#56) Greetings, ladies and gentleman. Apologies for the small hiatus taken over the last two weeks from movie viewing and reviewing (and thanks if you noticed). It's not easy opening a ginormous musical like The Producers at a theater, especially if you also contracted a debilitating virus to make things extra special. Thus, I was sort of horizontal and unable to process thoughts verbally or in writing when I wasn't trying to survive one of these harrowing performances. D " [More]

"Director Lynn Shelton’s follow-up to My Effortless Brilliance, Sundance Dramatic Competition entry stars Mark Duplass (HumpdayThe Puffy Chair) and Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project) as two college friends who meet up a decade later and somehow end up pacting to make a boy-on-boy sex tape together. Answering our 4 Questions We Ask Everyone, Shelton declared her love for The Princess Bride, named the crew member she poached from Medicine for Melancholy, and explained her philosophy of low expectations. Tell us about your movie: who did you work with, what did you shoot on, why did you make it? Give us the reductive, 25-word or less, “It’s like [pop culture reference a] meets [pop culture reference b]!” pitch, then explain what the quick and dirty sell leaves out. Humpday is like Bang the Drum Slowly meets Jaws. " [More]

"It’s Halloween, a time when sales of candy and rentals of horror movies spike off the charts. Candy has been around since the time of the ancient Egyptians, but the horror film is barely 100 years old. The genre is enjoying a resurgence in popularity over the past several years: right now you’ve got Saw V in wide release, Let The Right One In in limited theaters, the vampy teen Twilight coming up in a few weeks and True Blood making waves on HBO. Studios can’t seem to go more than a few months without releasing some sort of a zombie flick, and vampires are coming back into their own. But what was the first real horror film? Before movies existed, people had to get their scares from books and the local newspaper, but now you can just switch on cable and tune into NBC’s Chiller channel for instant scares. Check out a brief history of the horror movie after the break, and look just how far we’ve come. [More]

"Twitter, the popular micro-blogging service, has turned into a powerful tool in the hands of not only consumers but marketers of all stripes as well. Comcast, Paramount Pictures and a handful of others have all latched on to it as a way to communicate with customers, acting not only as a distribution platform but a conversation hub and customer service hub as well. Some of the biggest names in the social media marketing world are spending serious time brainstorming how to use Twitter for marketing, debating its usefulness and otherwise hashing out a series of best practices for utilizing the service. Media outlets have also turned to Twitter for many of the same reasons. TV Guide, Fox News and even Spout have a presence there to, again, promote their content and, in some cases, even engage in a back-and-forth with readers. But did you know that Darth Vader is twittering? How about Cobra Commander? [More]

"From what I understand, Spielberg's technique wasn't exactly well-refined when he made this film. What allowed this film to survive was the film's editing. I really don't know myself, as I've never seen the very original footage. The performances were still pretty good, though. " [More]

"These may not be the greatest titles of all time, but they're the right movies for right now The summer is starting, vacations are being planned, station wagons are being packed but all you can think of is sitting down in your favorite chair and zoning out in front of the tube. These are for you. Falling Down (1993) – Some people remember Joel Schumacher as the director that tried to ruin the Batman movies, some remember him much loved generation X classic, The Lost Boys. I choose to think of him as the director of this gem of an action/drama/dark comedy. This movie is perfect for the beginning of summer because one of the most memorable images is that of Michael Douglas’ sweat beaten body stuck in traffic with no air conditioning. Intolerable Cruelty (2003) – I think of Fargo and No Country for Old Men as the Oktoberfest special batch from the Coen brothers’ brewery. This movie would be slightly dilut ... " [More]

"1. Jaws (1975) What more can be said about this film. This film never gets old, and it's still just as frightening today as it was on my first viewing. Unbelievable direction (understatement of the year). 2. Fitzcarraldo (1982) The greatest scene in this film has a boat in it, but the boat is being pulled over a mountain (does that still count). An incredibly ambitious film about an incredibly ambitious man. 3. Lifeboat (1944) When the whole movie takes place in a life boat you better have a great story, and a great cast. Thankfully it's Hitchcock, so the tension and suspense is always building. 4. The African Queen (1951) Boogie and Hepburn on the run from German troupes. Battling crocodiles, rapids, and everything else that the African jungle throws at them. Huston makes a film that goes into my small list of perfect films. 5. Burden Of Dreams (1982) I'm gonna throw a curve ball here. Les Bank's documentary chronicling the production of Fitzcarraldo is ... " [More]
