"A group of what appears to be painters enters a New York City Bank, and lock the doors. One of them then disables the security cameras with a flashlight equipped with an infrared light. They then reveal high-powered weapons, and ordering everybody on the ground. When they secure the place, they order all the adult hostages to strip down to their underwear, and put on clothing identical to their own. The strange thing is, they aren't interested in the vault. Two NYPD detectives are assigned to the case, and head to the scene to negotiate with the robbers/hostage takers. One of the detectives, played by Denzel Washington, believes that there is a lot more to the story than the villains are telling the authorities through released hostages. The bank's president (Christopher Plumber) has a secret in the bank that the hostage situation is taking place in, and to keep it secret he hires an independent negotiator (Jodie Foster) to go into the bank and put his secret into her hands to brin ... "Are you one of the many sci-fi and comic book geeks who’d be more interested in Push were it not for Dakota Fanning? Sure, the precocious child star is now a teen actress (she’s about to turn 15), yet that probably makes you even more worried about her appearance in the movie. But what can you do? She’s literally everywhere this week – voicing the title character in the animated Coraline and starring in two new video releases, Hounddog and The Secret Life of Bees, both of which were released Tuesday. In the tradition of child actors continuing careers into adolescence, it’s only a matter of time before she ruins a movie that would have been better without her. We’ll have to wait until this weekend to see if that time is now, with Push, but in the meantime let’s take a look at some of the past offenders in this tradition. Most of the following " [More]

"With movies like Malcolm X, Do the right Thing, Jungle Fever, and even to a little extent with The 25th Hour Spike lee films have always dealt with the issue of race and what it means to get along or to not get along as a society. In Inside Man he goes much more main stream and gives us a straight forward heist thriller. What kind of disapointed me about this film is that as much as I love Spike Lee and some of his earlier films he doesn't really bring anything new to the heist genre. My point being that anybody could have directed this and got the same film. The performances where very good and I especially liked Clive Owen his face is covered up for most of the film but he his still unpredictable and truly terrifying as the main villain. The film was entertaining and I would suggest seeing it because I do think it is worth the price of a rental but if you are looking for a trade mark Spike Lee joint you will not find it here. "By Tricia Olszewski Spike Lee has done commercials, of course. But has he ever really done commercial? Apparently, the uneven auteur was willing to do anything to make up for She Hate Me, his unwatchable 2004 effort about corporate malfeasance, alternative families, George W. Bush, and, uh, Woody Harrelson. Except for a few trademark tricks and some race-related chatter, the new Inside Man is as far from a Spike Lee Joint as the director is likely ever to get. How box-office-seductive is this heist movie? Let’s just say that Ron Howard was originally slated to direct. Lee’s work here is energetic and assured, but it’s unlikely that even Ed Wood could’ve screwed up Russell Gewirtz’s stellar debut script. A tight, smart puzzler that doesn’t throw out red herrings so much as intriguing question marks, Inside Man has all the wit, complexity, and self-awareness of The Usual Suspects or Dog Day Afternoon. (The latter is even referenced during the ine ... " [More]

"I remember ,back then (i nearly said,"back in the day") Spike Lee seemed to do no wrong for me..He was like a black, politically active Woody Allen. The directing style was immediate, broke the "forth wall" continually, and the polemic came with a heavy dose of cynical humour...how could i disagree with any of it? Remember this is when HipHop was the cutting edge political music. Public Enemy may have been the band featured, but it's equally a visual manifestation of the music of Gil-Scott Heron.. i enjoyed "Inside Man" ,but it was only with "When the Levees Broke" that Spike went back to the top of my list again... "Spike Lee's newest movie, "Inside Man" starts off deceptively simple: a group of thieves infiltrate a New York bank, take hostages and hold themselves up in the basement offices. It sounds like every other heist movie ever made. There's a catch, though: for as smart as the "good"guys are, the "bad"guys are just as clever. I don't want to spoil the movie by detailing just how clever Dalton Russell (Clive Owen, "Closer") is but I do want to say it is refreshing to see a movie that has its central plan nailed down flawlessly. It's not very often that we believe the characters on screen have thought through their actions like real people. Russell is one of those people. He has calculated, planned and undoubtedly rehearsed the entire operation to perfection. Everything we, the audience, and the cops (including Denzel Washington's Detective Keith Frazier) think of, Russell has not only thought of, but also planned a counter-move against. It's amazing, really. "Inside Man" isn't a typi ... " [More]

"Inside Man is a welcome releif, being a whole lot better than it looks. The movie shows us that the words "thiller" and "good" are not necessarily mutualy exclusive. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it does have something to say, it says it well, and it's a lot of fun.I am not as familier as I should be with the work of Spike Lee, having seen only three of his films, "Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X" and "Bamboozled" (I found the first to be good but overrated and the last two to be excellent). "Inside Man" is not as relelentless didactic as those films, it's not as polical either, but more generally philosophical. Many of Lee's movies involve race relations and this is no exception, but he integrates the racial themes into a larger story and less specific idea. The story, as you know from the trailer, involves "the perfect bank robbery." Clive Owen plays Daltran Russell, the head of a leage of proffesional crooks who enter a bank dressed as painter and hold everyone hostage. ... " [More]

"( 'obscure' spoiler here folks.).. .Good but not great...main thought..as often these days,i wish i was an editor ..it's just too long...'hellaccious cast' right enough ..but there's enough material here for a tight ,hour long 'Hustle' type T.V. outing...and /or a superior post 9/11 'NYPDBlue' type series...granted it might have to be Dennis Haysbert, not DenZEL..and Marg Helgenberger, not Jody Foster...but so it goes. Spike Lee was at pains to point out the homage to 'Dog Day Afternoon' and in case any slow-witted film fan misses it 'Dog Day..' is name-checked along with 'Serpico' and 'Kojak' ...the film that i had in mind most though was 'Quick Change' the great Bill Murray comedy where he pulls a bank heist dressed as a clown( a central idea from which is employed here).Best aspect of " [More]

"The plot of "Inside Man" revolves around the perfect bank robbery...or so you think. The entire film is based upon deception. Even the direction throws you for a loop: the editing upsets your sense of chronology, film colors and gradient change, offsetting the "reality" of the story, and the entire tense storyline is speckled not with true comic relief, but dark humor, social commentary, and closeups of breasts. This was my first Spike Lee film, and it certainly took some getting used to, not only for the no-longer-novel twisted-chronology technique and the film grade changes, but for the seemingly irrelevant Arab and Jew remarks made by characters, sexy conversations, and a brief lesson on political correctness which Denzel's character gives to an NYPD cop (which actually have quite a bit to do with the plot). The whole movie would seem quite random, except that the well-written script and indie-style directing techniques tightly integrate the parts of t ... " [More]

"Inside Man (2006) Although this is just another bank heist movie, it has enough new wrinkles to make it interesting. Director Spike Lee, with major studio backing, gets good performances from his elite actors—Denzel Washington (who I always like), Clive Owen (who has power even though he talks through a ski mask most of the movie), Jodie Foster (whose revoltingly muscular and tanned legs reflect her personality as a rich people’s “fixer”), and Christopher Plummer (as the uneasy old banker who wants his dirty secret to remain hidden in safety deposit box #392). Unfortunately, the last two minutes of the movie has a typical Hollywood ending where a wildly improbable event happens in order to tell dense or sleepy or lazy viewers exactly what happened in the movie.
