Directed by Spike Lee
The volatile showdown between a determined cop and a perfectionist bank robber is sent spiraling toward disaster when a scheming power broker steps in to take control of the situation in this hair-raising heist flick directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. Dalton Russell (Owen) is a bank robber with a difference. In his quest to execute the perfect heist, Dalton has taken every possible factor into consideration. Dalton's uncanny ability of staying one step ahead of the law thwarts even-tempered Detective Keith Frazier's (Washington) best efforts. But there's another factor at play. The bank president (Christopher Plummer) has requested the services of high-profile negotiator Madeline White (Foster). Despite her commendable track record, Madeline is something of a wild card, and before the day is over, this bank robbery will go down in history as one of the most elaborate heists ever executed. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"A group of what appears to be painters enters a New York City Bank, and lock the doors. One of them then disables the security cameras with a flashlight equipped with an infrared light. They then reveal high-powered weapons, and ordering everybody on the ground. When they secure the place, they order all the adult hostages to strip down to their underwear, and put on clothing identical to their own. The strange thing is, they are " [More]

"With movies like Malcolm X, Do the right Thing, Jungle Fever, and even to a little extent with The 25th Hour Spike lee films have always dealt with the issue of race and what it means to get along or to not get along as a society. In Inside Man he goes much more main stream and gives us a straight forward heist thriller. What kind of disapointed me about this film is that as much as I love Spike Lee and some of his earlier films he doesn't really bring anything new to the heist genre. My poin " [More]

"I remember ,back then (i nearly said,"back in the day") Spike Lee seemed to do no wrong for me..He was like a black, politically active Woody Allen. The directing style was immediate, broke the "forth wall" continually, and the polemic came with a heavy dose of cynical humour...how could i disagree with any of it? Remember this is when HipHop was the cutting edge political music. Public Enemy may have been the band featured, but it's equally a visual manifestation of the music of Gil-Scott " [More]

"Spike Lee's newest movie, "Inside Man" starts off deceptively simple: a group of thieves infiltrate a New York bank, take hostages and hold themselves up in the basement offices. It sounds like every other heist movie ever made. There's a catch, though: for as smart as the "good"guys are, the "bad"guys are just as clever. I don't want to spoil the movie by detailing just how clever Dalton Russ " [More]

"[quote user="rjsprague"] I really liked that one with Clive Owen. I know that's not very descriptive, but I can't seem to remember the name of this film. I recall it had Denzel Washington in it as well, and I think Jodie Foster who was also good in Contact. Anyway I enjoyed the method that the robbers used to complete their thievery. "There are a lot of movies that I love that have heists in them but they are usually a means to an end and the bulk of the film usually deals with the fallout of said heist. Straight up heist films I love are : Jean Pierre Melville's stylish and masterful Le Cercle Rouge and Un Flic. [More]

Filmmaker Spike Lee's first foray into big-studio genre movies, Inside Man is a twisty thriller that makes up for its flaws with star power and sharp observations about post-2001 New York. With his keen eye for New York City atmosphere and gift for kinetic camerawork, Lee enhances the tension of neophyte scripter Russell Gerwitz's bank heist and the shifting questions of the robbers' identities and motivations during what becomes a very long night in the life of Denzel Washington's initially confident hostage negotiator. Nothing, of course, is as it seems, as even a superficially slick genre narrative becomes fodder for Lee's witty and ominous commentary about racial profiling, class, and the complexities of New York's ethnic melting pot. Perennial Lee leading man Washington is sterling as a detective who refuses to let anything get in the way of doing his job. Washington's nemesis Clive Owen exudes his signature cool charisma as the steely criminal mastermind, while Jodie Foster has a ball playing a powerful woman whose job title remains an utter mystery. Once the standoff ends, though, the energy dissipates and the multiple endings still leave a few glaring holes. Nevertheless, Lee still succeeds in pulling off the neatest trick of all: making Inside Man sleek entertainment with a brain. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide
