"In Fucking Bruges!?! My wife has been there, and that is the only reason I know it is in Belgium. The movie garnered a fist full of ‘Best Screenplay‘ nominations, including an Oscar nod. And it is… both set in Belgium and well written. We get the gist pretty quick, two Brit mob killers are sent to cool their heels in Bruges after a hit goes awry. One is an older sensible fellow, the other the brash young one who was obviously responsible for whatever the cock-up was. The odd couple pairing could play like every other incarnation… Oh, the sensible one likes culture and the oafish one doesn’t. The traditional formula is quite simple. Circumstances force opposing personalities together. They clash in humorous ways until a challenge appears for both of them. By embracing their differences, they overcome and gain a great appreciation for each other. For ‘In Bruges “>In Bruges‘, you might as well stuff that in your pipe and smoke it, because that isn’t the gig. Somehow, through the cunn ... " [More]

"At first, In Bruges appears to rely on plot and character "twists" that you've seen enough times that they aren't really "twists" anymore. The thoughtful hitman. Two contrasting buddies, one crude, the other refined. The comically-menacing crime boss. What you get here are new twists on these themes. The hitman is thoughtful in truly meaningful and difficult ways. The "crude" buddy may not actually be such a bad guy. The Mob boss's sense of "honor" is both familiar and refreshingly flawed. Meanwhile, the film truly is "a feast for the eyes". " [More]

"Here's some spontaneous reactions to the '09 Golden Globe Nominations.Inspired by Josh Hall a.k.a skishua and his latest blog post, each reaction comfortably fits Twitter's 140 character limit, more or less.I recommended Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience, for exuberant Oscar coverage and accurate Oscar Predictions. In general: This wasn't good news for Rachel Getting Married, The Dark Knight and Milk. Each film earned one acting nom. Despite four potential nominations.Best Drama: An incredible snub for The Dark Knight and Milk but a big PUSH for my predicted win The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.Best Musical or Comedy: Will the Hollywood Foreign Press make the right decision and reward Happy-Go-Lucky's charm with the top prize?Best Performance by an Actress in Drama: A rough competition here, all five vaginas best beware of Sally Ha " [More]

"Quantum of Solace is a good Bong movie, and that's it. It doesn't transcend or reinvent like Casino Royale. It's just fun and forgettable. In fact, I can recall nothing except Daniel Craig ("Defiance") continues to be good. Dame Judi Dench ("Notes on a Scandal") continues to be great. Stuff blows up and the girls are hot.Why am I a sucker for Sci-Fi channel originals? That may be something only years of therapy can uncover. But until then, I am so in. Kaw is set in a small town where the sheriff is putting in his last day. Then crows start going crazy and people start dying and the whole retirement party is put on hold. Most of the acting is really bad. But I fount it watchable. I even bought the explanation. However, the end wrapped everything up in a tidy bow and was sort of anticlimactic. Still, not a bad afternoon. As a warning, In Bruges is not a knee-slapping-side-splitting laugh riot as the trailer implies. It is funny, especially when Colin Farrell ("Pride and Glory") opens ... "Martin Mcdonagh on his debut makes a great case for more playwrights stepping into film. He and the cast handle the dark themes of guilt and atonement with as much ease as the films many comedic moments. There are a few belly laughs to be had from Colin Farrell's dialogue alone. In Bruges is guaranteed to offend some people, you may be one of those people but the film really doesn't care. It just keeps on entertaining until the credits roll. One of my favourites of 2008 so far. " [More]

"It's been nearly 14 years since Pulp Fiction re-popularized and re-mythologized the hitman for its generation, and through this time, cinema has seen more than its share of men (and sometimes, rarely, women) executing people for money.  Anyone who was paying attention to such things can remember the tiring glut of mostly abhorrent, jokey crime dramas that followed in Pulp's wake, so much so that it often seemed that the film's legacy would be the forever tied to these lesser pictures.  And, of course, in many ways that's true.  To this day, Pulp Fiction represents a change in filmic paradigm, but it paved the way for both its lesser imitators as well as those that exceeded it in quality.  Without it, it's hard to imagine No C " [More]

"I've recently watched a string of bad movies. They're not bad as in they never should have been made. It's more disappointing than that. They're bad because a good idea and often talent was wasted on poor execution.I should have known better than to throw away my time on them. They were all released in the dumping ground casually referred to as the Spring Season. Few decent U.S. films debut during this time. It's home for stupid family fare featuring Martin Lawrence (College Road Trip and Wild Hogs) and now random offerings from this year's unexpected double-dipper, Dennis Quaid. 2007 was a rare exception to the rule with Zodiac, Grindhouse, and the widely liked but personally loathed 300. Typically, it's an overall mess. The films that I ignored post-Oscar rush and pre-Summer Blockbuster are now on DVD and at the library. Since now I don't have to pay to see them, the slightest bit of interest that I suppressed in March and April by staying home now looks at me every day at work a ... " [More]

"I've heard people saying, they didnt think of Colin Farrell as doing "funny" .. They obviously didnt see,or forgot "Intermission" ..The "movie within a movie" being made in "in Bruges",is supposedly a rip-off of "Dont look now" .. That set-up provides THE most preposterous of pay-offs imaginable.. lots of "claret" a sprayin...and Ralph Fiennes seems to be reprising Ben Kingsley's character from "Sexy Beast"..The other reference there being ,tally of "F"-word usage (still beaten by "Resevoir Dogs" methinks..but probably outscoring on the "C " word quotiant. All that said..this is a great example of a movie that will have you laughing out loud at disgusting characters and disgusting behaviour .. with enough redeeming ,believable qualities in those characters to make it all okay.
