"A quirky yet thought-provoking movie infused with humor. An interesting role for Mark Wahlburg (i.e. Marky Mark) but he pulls it off. Lilly Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman are a great team...Overall really liked this offbeat film. "

"I’ve been keeping a vague log of Chris Matthews’ tendency to wedge non-sequitor movie references/analogies into his ostensibly hardcore-wonky political chat shows for awhile. Hands down the worse that I’ve seen: on the night of the Iowa caucus, Matthews tried to diagnose Mike Huckabee’s popularity thusly: “He appeals to a lot of people in the middle of the country, mostly because of I Heart Huckabees.” Really, Chris? Really? When you consider that my minor obsession with this has required me to become a faithful viewer of Matthews’ god-awful, cheap McLaughlin Group-knockoff Sunday morning chat show, I probably deserve a medal. But give me the silver, because whoever put together the montage on last night’s Daily Show??????proving that Matthews is not the only guilty party, but certainly the undisputed champion of the “This event is EXACTLY LIKE that one movie…” genre of political analysis??????deserves the gold. Skip to about 4:25 on the above clip to go straight to the good stuff. ... "

"It's been a couple of weeks since my last review/movie-viewing experience, and that is due in no small part to the fact that the Grand Rapids Civic Theater opened the Sound of Music, which I am stage managing, this past week. Please go see it, if you're in the area. It's wonderful on stage as much as it is wonderful on film. And I'm not just saying it because I'm involved. We have a fine cast, and the Civic is a lovely theater.Anyway. As such, stage managing and opening week left me little time for things like eating, sleeping, watching movies, breathing. It was a struggle to keep my head on straight. When all was said and done, though, I had this movie waiting for me to relax with come Sunday evening, from the all wonderful, no-pressure Netflix. From Rushmore with Jason Schwartzman, the magic queue led me to I Heart Huckabees with Jason Schwartzman. Naturally. Considering the plot outline, I thought this film would be an instant classic in my estimatio ... "

"This film is astounding. The first time I watched this film I was so absorbed by it that I put it on a second time the moment it finished and watched it twice through. I have since watched it probably a dozen times. It is something to behold that I have managed this as usually I cannot forgive mark Wahlberg for being in the remake of Planet Of The Apes. But even I have to admit that in this film he is amazing. The "pure-being ball thing" cracks me up every time and I'd be lying if I said that Jude Law (an actor I just plain cannot stand) didn't play his part brilliantly. This is a fantastic film and it brings so much more than most other films do today. Jason Schwartzman, whilst always good, is on top form here in a role that seems tailored just for him. I absolutely love this film and cannot get enough of it. I would encourage you to see it, as soon as possible. "

[What do you think?]
"Director Tony McNamara’s debut feature, The Rage in Placid Lake is a mixed bag. It instantly conjures comparisons to any number of American and Australian indie coming of age comedies, I (heart) Huckabees, Sweetie, Igby Goes Down and Rushmore, being the most obvious. Like those films, it shares a central character adrift in self crisis as he begins to navigate the adult world. Unlike those films, it creates a wholly believable series of personal tragedies and triumphs for its characters.Placid Lake (musician Ben Lee), as his name suggests, is seemingly nonplussed in almost every situation he encounters. Saddled with new age parents more interested in their own personal discovery than helping to acclimate their son to mainstream society, he is forced create ever more elaborate ways to assert his independence and identity. Like all anti-heroes, he is beset upon by the pressure to conform. This pressure is manifested as three bullies that make it their life’s goal to humil ... "

"Huckabees was exactly the kind of humor I'm into: smart and absurd. The writer/director, David Russell, has an awesome cast to fit this postmodern plot. Jason Schwartzman visits a pair of existential detectives, played by Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, to discover the meaning behind a coincidence in his life - running into a random African guy twice. But his life is now in the middle of a struggle between the existentialists and a nihilist philosopher, played by Isabelle Huppert. Helping Schwartzman along his path to discovery is Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg (this performance is only eclipsed by his character in The Departed) and Naomi Watts, all in stellar roles. This crisis of life comes to a collision with each character in the end for a hilarious and though-provoking send-off. David Russell really created a classic movie with great characters, appropriate acting, creative cinematography and roll-inducing laughter. "

"I am a fan of all of David O. Russell's films. This one might be my favorite. Who would have thought that a movie about existentialism could be this cool? I absolutely die laughing when Marky Mark looks at that guy across the dining room table and says, "You're the destroyer, man." Kills me every time. I absolutely love this movie (too bad Jean-Paul Sartre's dead....he would have liked this one, too). He also would have liked Isabelle Huppert. Wow..... Has anyone seen the video of Russell screaming at the top of his lungs at Lily Tomlin on the set of this movie? It's on youtube I believe. Seems he has some work to do on the whole being-content-with-yourself and-your-place-in-the-universe thing. He sounds like a total #@%#@!#@. Oh well, his movies are still good. "
