"Hot Fuzz Yes, it's Christmas and I'm writing a movie review. Why not. My friend Noah came to visit me for a while and brought a couple films with him, including Hot Fuzz. I liked it about as much as Shaun of the Dead made by the same group of filmmakers. Which is to say, it was enjoyable enough but otherwise fairly forgettable. These guys are praised for having seen so many movies that they know all the cliches and are able to make a good parody / homage. I guess I enjoy the parody part, but it's apparent the filmmakers actually have respect for movies like Point Break or even *shudder* Bad Boys II, both of which are blatantly referenced several times by characters in the film. [POSSIBLE SPOILER] One interesting coincidence is that in the same weekend that we watched this movie, we also watched The Wicker Man which this movie is obviously referencing with it's primary plot points and main plot twist. Rating: 6/10 "

"After reading all the great reviews and quite the high rating on IMdb (8.00 / 10), I decided to give Hot Fuzz another chance. Unlike Bonnie and Clyde where my mind was completely changed, my thoughts on Hot Fuzz did not. I found the humor cheap and the plot annoying. It starts off with Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) who is literally too good and seems to make the rest of the London Police Department look bad. Solution? Send him off to the country. Once he gets there, he discovers that the town has the lowest crime-rate in the country which he feels is pretty suspicious. Soon, people start dying off in gruesome ‘accidents’ but Nicholas is convinced that things aren’t really quite what they seem to be. It’s a plot that has been done many times before and many times better. But I feel like I’m in the minority of this so perhaps I just don’t “get it” but if you’re down for a pretty flat action / comedy, check it out. "

"Kathryn Bigelow hasn’t made a feature film since 2002’s Harrison Ford starrer K19: The Widowmaker, unless you count the “blink and you’ll miss it” Mission Zero with Uma Thurman. The Hurt Locker returns her to real roots as a character-driven action director, and she gets some terrific performances out of relative unknowns Jeremy Denner and Anthony Mackie in this film about the war in Iraq. In our interview, she discusses fictionalizing real war stories, what The Hurt Locker does that other Iraq films haven’t, and the everlasting legacy of Point Break. How did this project come together? It really predominantly came from his account and his first hand observations. I worked on the shaping of the script with him but he wrote it. We kind of shepherded it together onto the screen. "

"Fox Searchlight Pictures and Warner Brothers Pictures present, in association with Celador Films and Film4, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire. The screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy. The picture stars Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, and Irfan Khan. At the time of this review the film runs 120 minutes and has not yet been rated by the MPAA. The content as seen in my screening would suggest an MPAA "R" rating for scenes of torture and violence. The film is in Hindi and English with English subtitles. A young man, Jamal, who grew up an orphan on the streets of Mimbai, India, gets on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire to try to contact his girlfriend. He ends up defending himself against fraud charges brought by the host of the show who thinks that there is no way a "slumdog" could know all the answers that he does. How Jamal knows each answer is shown in flashbacks from his tough, dramatic, and tragic youth. Expertly crafted, Slumdog Millionaire has cr ... "

"Over the weekend, Wanted had a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com. It’s since gone down to 81% (at the time of this writing — and with top critics it’s down to 67%), though that’s still pretty good for a movie that initially looked like just another Matrix knockoff. But will the good reviews make for great box office? Last night, while viewing the latest trailer in a theater with some friends, I mentioned that Wanted was receiving great reviews. Nobody believed me at first, and then they didn’t care; they still thought it looked terrible. Good reviews rarely help an action movie, and bad reviews rarely deter audiences from seeing them. However, if we look at the top 5 most critically acclaimed action movies, it’s clear that people do often prefer a good action film to a bad one. The next 5, on the other hand… The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) Rotten Tomatoes’ “T-Meter” score: 94% (top critics: 98%) All Time Domestic Box Office Rank: #9 ($377 million) Sam "

"Hot Fuzz is one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a long time- and one of the best. It has more pure laughs than even Borat or Clerks II and is a little sweeter, in both senses of the word, than both of those films. If you have ever had to sit through a dumb action film, you will find Hot Fuzz to be massively entertaining. The movie is directed by Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg, both of whom co-wrote the script and previously collaborated on Shaun of the Dead, which I haven't seen but you can sure bet I am planning to now. The story concerns police Sgt. Nicholas Angel (Pegg) who is the best and most bad-ass officer on the London force. How good is he? He's so good he makes the rest of the force look bad, so they ship him off to the small shire of Sandford, where things seem to be sort of like a British version of the Andy Griffith Show town. The police force is easy going and not very competent, mainly because there's not much crime. Of course, Angel ... "

"Edgar Wright has been linked to an adaptation of the Marvel superhero Ant Man since before even Shaun of the Dead was made. Surprisingly, he’s still attached to the project, a feat that is rare in Hollywood. But since Ant Man is a lesser character in the Marvel Universe, there seems to be less of a rush to get him up on the big screen. However, last week Wright told Empire that he has at least completed a screenplay after all these years, and he is taking a meeting (undoubtedly with someone from either Marvel Studios or Paramount) about the movie this week. The writer-director, who last gave us Hot Fuzz, is still unsure what his next gig will be, though he seems to have it narrowed down to Ant Man and another comic adaptation titled Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, the plot of which sounds more in line with Wright’s penchant for comedic gore. While I eagerly anticipate anything that Wright serves up, I’m especially interested in the Ant Man adaptation. In an

"A cop par excellence is re-assigned from his London beat to a small town in England's West. He arrives to find a serene and tight-knit community and a lax and not exactly competent police force service. As he follows his policeman instincts, he causes a lot more disturbance than the town is used to. Of course, nothing is what it seems in this sleepy place, and very soon a string of gruesome deaths ensues... Hot Fuzz starts nothing short of brilliant. Simon Pegg projects both single-mindedness of Sgt Nicholas Angel and his general bafflement over why other people do not share his attitude with the perfect blend of body language, facial expressions and quietly impeccable speech. I love the quick cuts that bridge the narrative. Angel's equanimity, coupled with the haplessness and indolence of his new comrades-in-arms, makes for great situational comedy.Unfortunately, when the plot picks up speed, the movie slides into grotesque and loses its brilliance. Nicholas starts ... "
