"I don’t know whether or not I’m Through with White Girls––a low-budget, semi-high-concept rom-com about a black comic book nerd who makes a conscious decision to stop dating girls who look like me in order to start dating girls who look more like him, but ends up falling for a girl who looks like Lisa Bonet in High Fidelity, except more so––has the power to ignite a real, widespread conversation about interracial dating and the contemporary politics of race+class+coolness (or lack thereof). But after last night’s packed-house screening at BAM, which was followed by a surprisingly feisty Q & A, I do know that White Girls has the power to make a Brooklyn blogger self-censor, and that’s a feat to which few films can lay claim. It was the title that did it, more than anything actually on screen. Screenwriter Courtney Lilly says he figured out what to call the film before he’d fully fleshed out its concept––he was i ... "

"This is nothing like my top ten of 2007. I don’t not do top ten lists because I think they’re stupid, pointless or pretentious. I don’t do them because I never see enough films in the year to feel I’m adequately representing what is the best of the year. I don’t even feel I could represent my favorite of the year, since later on I’ll likely see some great films from this year that would qualify as my favorite(s). So, I’m just going to present some movies (or parts of movies) I really loved this year, and tell you what I loved about them. Because to me best of lists are merely a reminder of movies I still need to see, consider this a list only of things you might have missed and should definitely check out. Sunshine and The Last Winter - Two incredible science fiction stories that each ends rather disappointingly. Fortunately both are good enough until their denouements that they are completely recommendable to serious sci-fi fans and anybody else who wants to spark up some discuss ... "

"High Fidelity (2000) is a superbly made movie—wonderful direction (Stephen Frears), excellent pace, editing that matches the subject matter, top-notch acting, and a couple of messages wrapped in wry comedy. I enjoyed it as much as the first time I saw it when it came out. That said, it focuses relentlessly on a topic that might not be appealing to a lot of people, and is less and less interesting to me: a thirty-something guy who won’t grow up in his relationships with women or his career. Furthermore, the messages aren’t as profound as I thought they were years ago. One: With women, you should think of what they might want rather than doing whatever is necessary to get them into bed and make yourself happy. Not that profound. Two: It is better to be a productive participant than a side-line critic. This is a more thought-provoking theme. But “criticism”, which Matthew Arnold maintained could be one of the most important things in a healthy society, do ... "

"1. Almost Famous (2000) - I know a lot of people who dismiss this film, but It's one of my favorites. I truly captures the spirit of the era. 2. Nashville (1975) - An epic, sprawling masterpiece. One of Altman's finest achievements. 3. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) - What more should be said. Fantastic music & possible the funniest movies of all time.4. High Fidelity (2000) - Frears & company perfectly capture the spirit of the book. Made the whole Top 5 list process even more relevant.5. A Hard Day's Night (1964) - Obviously the songs are amazing, but this is one of the most fun films you could ever see.Runners Up:The Red ShoesFive Easy Pieces Amadeus "

"Crooklyn Disc 2 - It's the best compilation of the seventies that will never appear on a "Best of the 70's" compilation.Yes, High Fidelity. Can't beat it with a stick.True Stories, soundtrack by the Talking Heads. I know I'm in the vast minority, but it's my favorite album of their's.Mentioned elsewhere in this group, Un Coeur en Hiver can be set on "Repeat" for days and never get old.And I can't deny the hundreds of times I listened through the Trainspotting soundtrack. Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" is one of my all-time faves thanks to Danny Boyle. "
