"As I scramble to catch the last couple of films that will complete my Oscar Watch List, I am prematurely making my picks for the statuettes tomorrow night. I will save judgement on the Foreign Language and Documentary Short categories, neither of which I have had the opportunity to get into since I live in a town where you can see 4 screens of Rambo, but you're lucky to get to see an independent or foreign film only months after it comes out on DVD at the local film club. That being said, I have also not had the chance to see 3 of the Documentary Features, but am confident in my decision in that category nonetheless. Otherwise, by tomorrow night's Academy Awards ceremony I will have seen every single movie nominated in every other category.So, onto my picks: Screenplay, OriginalShould Win:

"With the second Hellboy film currently in theatres it seems appropriate to take a look back at the first of Big Red’s big screen appearances, also directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film opens towards the end of the Second World War on an island off the coast of Scotland. The Nazis are working with Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin to open a transdimensional portal to awaken the Seven Gods of Chaos to destroy their enemies and turn the course of the war which, by this stage, is going badly. A small troop of American soldiers, accompanied by occult specialist Professor Thomas Bruttenholm, are sent to destroy this portal. Rasputin succeeds in opening the portal, but only for a moment, being sucked through the portal when it is destroyed. The crisis has temporarily been averted but whilst the Seven Gods of Chaos did not make it through the portal in time a tiny, bright red demon child did. This child, with a right hand made of stone, is coaxed into Bruttenholm’s arms with a ... "

"I wrote a full review of Hellboy II - The Golden Army over at SpoutBlog. It’s sort of half a review of the movie and half an examination of how Hellboy fits into the pantheon of stoic, emotionally stunted male action heroes. The three-disc special edition I received to review contains a digital copy of the movie you can transfer to iTunes, possibly my favorite feature that’s being added to DVDs right now. In Hellboy’s case, his laconic “Oh crap” is a massive sarcastic understatement when he’s faced with, as in one scene in The Golden Army, a massive flower god that’s spreading itself all over Manhattan. But while he works to betray little in the way of uncertainty in situations like that, the thing that’s causing him the most pain - his relationship with the human fire-starter Liz Sherman played by Selma Blair - is always at the tip of his tongue. The fact that he can’t figure out her wants and needs continue to be the one problem in his life he can’t punch away, "

"Hellboy 2 was part of my 20th birthday extravaganza. I can't think of a better way to enter my second decade of life. For a while I was kind of lukewarm on Hellboy. It was a pretty good movie, but I always felt like there was kind of something missing. Then I saw the Director's Cut. It does for Hellboy what the extended edition DVD of The Two Towers did for its theatrical release counterpart. It just seems richer, somehow. Interesting side-note: an acquaintance of my parents is an inker and writer for Dark Horse Comics, and calls Hellboy his favorite comic-book adaptation to date. He knows Mike Mignola. He said he (Mignola) was insanely excited about the movie when it came out, and passed out cigars like a proud father. "

"Been on vacay for a little while, but had plenty of time to soak in cinema as well as sun. So here are some observations (probably with random question marks throughout cuz I used a Mac notetype it). It's hard to imagine there is any cinematic crime left to battle this summer, with the amount of superheroes combating evil-doers in theaters. And while all of them may be eclipsed by a certain dark knight this weekend, it's hard to imagine one that will feature a world as visually stunning as director Guillermo del Toro's brilliantly buoyant Hellboy II: The Golden Army. While the new Batman may soar in its complexities, both in drama and dialogue, del Toro is such a stylistic master that he at the same time pays homage to past cinematic worlds while creating wholly unique ones.The Golden Army could actually come across as the fun-loving, slightly intoxicated sibling of the director's masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth. And it's more than happy to share the buzz. Freaky, fun and phantasmagori ... "

"The internet keeps crashing on me. Making me crazy. Please be advised.Breaker Morant is based on the actual events during the Boer War, and subsequent court marshalling of three Australian officers. The government has set them up for a fall, providing them with an inexperienced defense attorney and allowing him little time to prepare his case. The trial scenes are tense and the flashbacks to what the men actually did in the field are also engaging. But I was really fascinated with how the men held up in their cells, preparing to face their verdict, and the politics of it all. Very good.Ah, the Sweet Smell of Success, good in so many ways. Burt Lancaster ("Field of Dreams") is a gossip columnist and Tony Curtis ("Reflections of Evil") is a PR agent trying to get his clients some publicity. Only Lancaster's shutting him out because he wants Curtis to break up his sister's relationship with a musician. Then the plot gets twisty. Curtis is fast talking and sleazy and grasping for fame. ... "

"Surely you are going to see The Dark Knight this weekend. Even if you already saw it at a preview screening last night/this morning, you’re probably geeky enough to be planning on seeing it again before Monday morning comes along. After all, Warner Bros. has dispersed a record amount of prints to a record amount of screens and the pundits are predicting a record box office gross for the weekend (never mind the fact that fellow new releases Mamma Mia! and Space Chimps and other still-strong blockbusters Hellboy II, Hancock and Wall-E will be supposedly be assisting in this matter).
