Directed by Danny Leiner.
Directed by Danny Leiner, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle follows the life-changing (and mind-altering) journey of Korean-American investment banker Harold (John Cho) and Indian-American medical-school candidate Kumar (Kal Penn). Both underdogs, Harold and Kumar decide to spend what would have been an otherwise uneventful Friday night satisfying an oddly intense urge for White Castle hamburgers. However, finding a White Castle proves a highly difficult task, and the two friends wind up on an epic road trip of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling, and enough half-baked, politically incorrect philosophizing to outweigh a White Castle value meal. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

SpoutBlogSpoutBlog 10 Movies for Democrats

"The Democratic National Convention is over, and all the ecstatic party members have left Denver to go back to their zombie-esque lives (Bob Hope said it, not me). But after four days of celebrating what it means to be a Democrat, some may not wish to settle down and calmly wait out the next two months until Obama’s (possible) win, let alone the next five months waiting for the candidate to (possibly) be sworn in as President, participating in the normal non-specifically-Democratic, non-self-congratulatory activities that most of us are content with. So, one thing excited Democrats can do is watch movies that will continue to inspire and encourage their beliefs and politics. As Karina already wrote, The American President is one movie that just barely may allow Obama fans to relive his DNC speech. Also, beginning yesterday, the Oscar-nominated documentary No End in Sight will be available in full on YouTube through till Election Day. Of course, there’s always other anti-war and ant ... "A friend with weed is a friend indeed. That is the lesson to be extracted from the latest comedy off the Judd Apatow assembly line, “Pineapple Express.” While it may get anti-marijuana advocates abuzz with consternation, it's a sweet little trip until a dramatic shift to violence quite literally calls the cops to this feel-good party. “Express” is laced with guffaws and gunplay, and while not as startlingly schizophrenic as this summer's “Hancock,” it still feels as though its personalities are squished together in such a forced fashion, it threatens to disrupt the good vibes it garners through much of the film. And, like all of Apartow's blockbuster comedies before it (“Knocked Up,” Superbad,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”), it overstays its welcome by at least 30 minutes. Imagine, if you will, an entire film devoted to the ganja-clouded escapades of Brad Pitt's Floyd, the moviewestoner he portrayed in Tony Scott's &ldqu ... " [More]
SpoutBlogSpoutBlog 10 Small Roles for Big Stars

"We’re less than a week away from the release of Tropic Thunder, and as the reviews and puff pieces make their way onto the web, there’s one thing clearly uniting the media’s coverage: talk of Tom Cruise’s appearance in a small role as a Hollywood studio boss. Everyone seems to agree that he steals the show and that his performance — or the joke surrounding it — is one of the comedy’s major highlights, if not the actual best part. Of course, we can expect a good cameo from Cruise every now and then. He showed up for a bit part in Young Guns and played himself as playing “Austin Powers” in Austin Powers in Goldmember. But from what it sounds like, his role in Tropic Thunder is featured for longer than might qualify as a cameo. Some are regardless referring to the performance as an “extended cameo”, and in theory it certainly fits in with the huge crop of so-called “ironic cameos” that have become popular in movies and TV in the last ten years. Still, despite my not having yet seen th ... " [More]

"[quote user="wonga"] there are loads of "pot" movies but i think Smiley Face is the best of the bunch. it features cupcakes AND Doritos! also, of course, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, with their quest for apparently the Holy Grail of food. we don't have White Castles around here - are they really that good? [/quote] We don't have the restaurants here in Phoenix either but you can find the sliders in the freezer section sometimes and they're pretty good. " [More]

"I went with people who I think could carry the roles well and have played lots of varied characters so that their performance would be different from the Matrix we know. Neo -- Orlando Bloom * His acting range is just as limited as Keanu Reeves, well he might be slightly stiffer. Morpheus -- Gabriel Byrne Nobody can project rightous anger and and a sense of forboding menace like Byrne. Trinity -- Franka Potente She does rugged and yet feminine. she can handle both the emotional needs and would be believable in the action sequences. Agent Smith -- Denzel Washington King Kong ain't got nuthin' on him. Oracle -- Eva Marie Saint Is there anybody else who can handle and deliver bad news like she can? Cypher -- Maggie Gyllenhaal Smart and sexy, Maggie can play seductive and greedy like few can. Tank - Tadanobu Asano He was great in the Zatoichi and can be tough when the situation calls for it. Apoc -- Jena Malone Let's give this role some depth. Jena can add that something special with j ... " [More]

"There is a great surprise in the heart of The Namesake: that Kal Penn can actually act as something other than a stoner. The movie becomes something a shambling bear by the end, but it has a poignancy that is a hallmark of the assured and gracious hand of director Mira Nair. The movie tells two interwoven stories: that of Ashima (played by Tabu) who follows her husband from warm and supportive India to the Cold and lonely New York City and that of her son, Gogol, who grows up between the world of possibilities that America offers and the world of tradition represented by India. They are both forced to learn how to find the world of support that is around them, but one they have never tapped into before, but their paths are going in different directions. Ashima has to learn the value of independence, while Gogol learns the value of family. One of the saving graces of this movie is the long silences when the characters don’t talk to each other but manage to say everything. From ... " [More]

"Do any of you guys watch How I Met Your Mother, the CBS show starring Niel Patrick Harris (Harold & Kumar)? If you do, you might remember Robin Sparkles, the 80s Canadian pop singer who was totally the brainchild of the viral marketing channel at CBS. When the episode aired, I totally googled "Robin Sparkles" and found her MySpace page... only to later discover that it was all a marketing ploy! There's something "magical" about the music, and watching the music videos just make them so much more fulfilling. "Let's Go To The Mall" "Sandcastles In The Sky" " [More]

"The sequel to Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle opens in theaters today, and you can read my SXSW review of the movie, titled Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, over here. Though I enjoyed it, H&K2 disappointed me for taking on too much plot. But apparently some other reviews are favoring the second installment, and according to Craig Phillips at Green Cine, the matter has critics divided. Phillips, who marginally prefers the sequel, uses the opportunity to revisit those sequels that improved upon the original. Obviously, the list includes The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and The Road Warrior. However, surprisingly, The Godfather Part II is not in the top ten, because he considers the first and second films tied, and he claims both Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are only honorable mentions, because their definite superiority is up for debate (true, I’ve never been able to decide if I like them better than their respectiv ... "One of the things I love about Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is the way it treats its two stars, John Cho (as Harold, or “Rold”) and Kal Penn (as Kumar). The plot could have been played with any hot young dudes in Hollywood in the roles – you’d maybe expect two white guys, one with blonde hair, one with brown – but instead the characters are a Korean-American and an Indian-American. And it isn’t a big deal. Aside from a few derogatory, stereotypical comments made by unfavorable guys the duo meets on their adventure to find a White Castle, race isn’t an issue and doesn’t really come into play story wise. However, the sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, turns the color of their skin into the impetus of the story, which revolves around them being mistaken for terrorists (“North Korea and Al-Qaeda working together”). Almost disguised as a smarter, more politically satirical follow-up, Guantanamo Bay, which was directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote ... " [More]

Rollicking good fun, persuasive in its joyful high spirits even during the slow, dumb bits, and even sometimes hilarious, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004) is another cult classic from Danny Leiner, the director of Dude, Where's My Car? (2000). As in that previous film, the yuks hinge on a simple premise: two mismatched buddies on a mundane quest. Granted, a search for addictive square mini-burgers is not exactly the quest for the grail, but it's where the film goes and how it gets there that distinguishes it from just another pea-brained teen sex romp. Over the course of an evening, the heroes (dryly played by John Cho and Kal Penn) escape from prison, have their car stolen by Neil Patrick Harris, who plays himself, and ride a cheetah (you read that correctly). They also encounter some organically placed celebrity cameos, such as Fred Willard, always a treat in small doses, and an unrecognizable Christopher Meloni as a tow-truck driver-cum-swinger named "Freakshow." Despite a brain-damaged subplot about the heroes' regular encounters with extreme-sports bullies (not sure what point is being made there), the pleasurable comic surprises like these keep coming regularly, layered over a surprisingly egalitarian insistence that anyone, regardless of ethnic origin, has the right to blaze up, pig out, and choose not to conform to racial stereotypes. It's a non-conformist, anti-politically correct message straight from the '70s. If you're of a certain tolerant mindset, it's a sweet relief that someone still believes it. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
