"The Telluride Film Festival is what Sundance would be if it took place in heaven. Every year the tiny mountain hamlet hosts four days of hassle-free cinema paradise. There were grumblings about the lack of American films, but we still found plenty to love. Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake) came with his delightful new movie, Happy-Go-Lucky. "This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.HardcoreThis movie hits home. And I mean fairly literally.Since Spout is based in Grand Rapids and has many users from Calvin College or who grew up in families from the Dutch Christian Reformed tradition, there may be many people on this site who could feel the same.Although this movie was released a few years before I was born, to see so many opening shots of Grand Rapids, and see and hear places like Zeeland and Grand Valley State University named, and hearing a list of last names the jumps right from the De- to the Van-, and to see this big Dutch family getting together at Christmas time made me instantly feel like this movie was more real than any movie I had ever seen before. Almost dangerously real.I'm not sure where George C. Scott got it. Maybe Paul Schrader was somehow able to convey exactly what the character of Jake VanDorn was to Sco ... "

"I had always thought of George C. Scott a hacky actor. He was always so BIG in everything he was in, and you were always aware that he was ACTING. But in the early 80s he found himself a niche… tormented father, a part he played with so much sensitivity here as a man of God wondering through Godless territory in search of his daughter who never returned home with her church group when they made a trip to LA. The anguish he conveys when faced with the truth about his daughters fate is powerful and heartbreaking. (Scott played a Father with a missing child of a different sort in The Changeling very effectively as well). Season Hubley (Mrs. Kurt Russell at the time) is great as well as his tour guide through the seedy underworld of sin he had only heard of before. Schrader is always a capable director with a great sense of style (American Gigolo, Cat People, Patty Hearst, The Comfort of Strangers). "

"Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes.For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ... "
