"I've recently watched a string of bad movies. They're not bad as in they never should have been made. It's more disappointing than that. They're bad because a good idea and often talent was wasted on poor execution.I should have known better than to throw away my time on them. They were all released in the dumping ground casually referred to as the Spring Season. Few decent U.S. films debut during this time. It's home for stupid family fare featuring Martin Lawrence (College Road Trip and Wild Hogs) and now random offerings from this year's unexpected double-dipper, Dennis Quaid. 2007 was a rare exception to the rule with Zodiac, Grindhouse, and the widely liked but personally loathed 300. Typically, it's an overall mess. The films that I ignored post-Oscar rush and pre-Summer Blockbuster are now on DVD and at the library. Since now I don't have to pay to see them, the slightest bit of interest that I suppressed in March and April by staying home now looks at me every day at work a ... " [More]

"Why don’t I give a shit about Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards? Is it because I sat through (and even partially live-blogged) his masturbatory “lecture on cinema” in Cannes––is it just too soon? Is it because I’ve seen Pulp Fiction so many times that I can no longer actually see anything in it at all? Is it because I walked out of Grindhouse saying. “Well, THAT joke isn’t funny anymore…”? I don’t know what it is! But I know that some of you probably care, so if you haven’t already, check out Vulture’s preview/review of the script. Having read the whole thing, Vulture says it’s “definitely the ur-text of Quentin Tarantino’s career up to now,” and maybe THAT’s my problem with it––I don’t think I’d be able to get into one more parade of Stuff Quentin Likes, especially if its greatest virtue is that it’s like what he always do " [More]

"It’s no surprise that Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, his addition to the B-movie throwback experiment Grindhouse, feels like a faster and funnier ride when separated from its double-feature partner, Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. It’s easier to sit through this chatty thriller when it doesn’t come after a humdrum 80-minute zombie flick.

"Like most anthology films, the idea behind Grindhouse is better than the actual result. The movie is a tribute to genre of film that I am not familiar with, so I am sure that I missed a lot of the references, but I think I got enough to make a valid judgment. Although both segments do not really live up to the promise, Robert Rodriguez's is surprisingly compelling and at times witty, while Quentin Tarintinio's is easily the director's worst work. The highlight of the double bill, however, are the phony trailers, directed by Rodriguez, Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Edgar Wallace. The little comedies are just about perfect, and I would have preferred to watch three hours of trailers of this quality then see either of the two films again. They receive four stars. Planet Terror *** In true exploitation tradition, the title has precious little to do with the movie in this homage to bad zombie m " [More]

"The film was a success because it did a good job playing off the seventies films. Quentin is a good director though I feel he should spread his wings more and do more diverse selection of films. I loved Kill Bill but hated Kill Bill 2. I felt Reservoir Dogs was a film that was edgy but not completely flat. It had a lot of good actors. I think Freddy Rodriguez was great in Planet Terror and I like Rose McGowan's performance. She looks great for her age. I felt that Bruce Willis and Narwan were great. The Film was quite fast moving. "In my opinion, the best movies of 2007...I gave an explanation of each, feel free to debate or call me an idiot or whatever. 1. No Country for Old Men Easily the best film I've seen in 2007...say what you want about the ending, but I think it's one of the most important statements about America ever put onto film. Anton Chigurh is by far the best villain I've seen in a real long time...his face when he's strangling the cop in the beginning still creeps me out when I think about it. The Cohen's have created their masterpiece of a resume of masterpieces. Call it, friendo.2. There Will Be Blood Yeah, I know these have been the top two films on almost every critic's list this year, but after seeing both of them I definitly understand why. Daniel-Day Lewis is fricken amazing as Daniel Plainview... one of the most explosive, invigorating performances I have ever seen from any actor. P.T. Anderson has outdone himself with this one. And not to mention the ... " [More]

"Here it is, one final post relating to the movies of 2007. This in my opinion is really the only list that counts. Here I'm not talking about the supposed best films of the year (although some certainly are) but rather which ones I personally loved most. This time I'm actually going to place them in order though. So sit back and relax as I unveil my top ten favorite films of 2007. (Sadly, 'Bratz' is not one of them.)[10] 'Black Snake Moan'I love Samuel L. Jackson. He's the only reason I'm even interested in the upcoming action-flick 'Jumper.' His role in 'Black Snake Moan' as the bluesman Lazarus was something completely different for him. This was a movie which basically boils down to being about a black man reaching out to a lust driven white girl in an attempt at helping her with her sickness. Sounds a little dirty when in fact their relationship in the film is anything but. The sad thing is this turned out to be a de " [More]

"One year later, I still feel great about my top 5 films of 2006, especially The Departed in the #1 spot. However, since I hadn't seen a good deal of the Oscar-friendly pictures due to my minor market setting, homage must now be paid to Children of Men, Letters From Iwo Jima, and Little Children, each of which would have made last year’s Top 10 list had I seen them in ’06.This year was another stellar one for film, as seen by the long list of notable releases not to make the Top 10. Again, the list only includes what I've seen and I've missed a number of appealing flicks. I’m certain that There Will Be Blood and hopefully Juno and Sweeney Todd will be in my ultimate “Best of 2007” list. Others that I haven't seen are: Margot at the Wedding; Charlie Wilson’s War; Atonement; I Am Legend; Michael Clayton; Sunshine; Talk To Me; Paris Je T’aime; The Savages; The Kite Runner; The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Fo ...
