"I saw Christmas decorations in a storefront Sunday, so I guess it’s already time to break out the holiday movies. And it’s evidently time for distributors to release holiday fare to theaters, even if Desplechin’s A Christmas Tale (Un conte de Noël), which hits theaters this Friday, isn’t exactly the latest crowd-pleasing installment of the Santa Clause franchise. In fact, with such ingredients as estrangement, mental illness, alcoholism and cancer, it doesn’t seem like a very happy holidays kind of film. Even if it is actually a comedy. But then how many holiday movies are completely void of depressing themes and scenes? I’m sure to have grown up thinking more about the homeless, suicide and family dysfunction from films set at Christmas and Thanksgiving than I did thinking about the happiness that comes with these holidays. One of the most tearjerking moments for me as a kid was certainly seeing Mickey Mouse crying over his dead son in [More]

"so i watched Gremlins tonite while i'm workin on the book. my daughter had it and its been a while since i've watched so why not. and then it hit me. this is a spielberg flick. i recently watched another stevey film, Munich. and wow. what a change. i wish he would get back to the fun films at least once or twice. gremlins also brought up an interesting point of logic. the kid says "never, ever - no matter how much he whines, feed him after midnite." well isn't the entire day, technically after midnite? when is it "safe" to feed the poor thing breakfast? just a thought. "An interesting point of note: This is the film that made the MPAA create the PG-13 rating, because in 1984 there was only G, PG, R & X ratings. And I can see why they would rate it that, as there is a grisly and actually rather frightening "kitchen death" scene that, upon recent viewing, still managed to make me jump. One of the best parts of this film, for me personally, was the theme song. I had a cheesy little Casio keyboard and was constantly learning songs to my favorite movies, video games and TV shows. This was a really fun one to do. Not a bad film, and it's interesting to see that Spielberg hadn't completely abandoned his "Jaws" roots yet at this point. " [More]

"I've been tagged by FilmSnob to participate in the Eight Things meme that's been going around. All the cool kids are doing it, and it's Friday, so why the hell not? But in the interest of keeping things around here *somewhat* on topic, I will try to keep this semi-film related. First, the rules: Rules: 1. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts. 2. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves. 3. People who are tagged write their own blog post about their eight things and include these rules. 4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. Don?t forget to leave them a comment telling them they?re tagged and that they should read your blog. Now, the things: 1) I have never seen the following films: Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, The Goonies or Gremlins. 2)When I first moved to New York, I was broke, working full time and going to school at night.
