"It’s only a couple of short weeks before the 2008 Oscar nominees are announced, and the internet is abuzz with prognostications. One hotly debated topic is whether or not Wall-E can pull off a Best Picture nomination, or even a win. It would be the second animated film to be nominated in the category, after Beauty and the Beast, which got the honor before the Animated Feature prize existed. Will the stodgy old Academy seat Wall-E at the kid’s table, giving it an easy win in the animation category, or will it be allowed to play with the big boys? A best pic nomination for Wall-E would be a rare honor for animation in general, but it would also be a long over due rarity for another reason: Wall-E would only be the second best pic nominated film in the history of the Oscars to be set in the future. "Sometimes I really wish David Bordwell’s blog permitted comments. Mostly it’s better that it doesn’t, but the man’s last post has made me want to discuss the art of movie titles for a whole week now. And it didn’t help that coinciding in time with Bordwell’s post was another one of those sidebars in Entertainment Weekly pointing out some new movies with misleading titles. Yes, Lakeview Terrace does sound like a period romance, as do many other badly titled films (Elizabethtown and Wicker Park come to mind). I’d ask what young starlet you’d most like to see in cornrows, but of course a newcomer is being sought to fill the iconic Bo Derek role. "Perhaps my review may be dismissed automatically by the fact that I have not revisited Narnia myself since reading them as a child, and even then, the C. S. Lewis books had none of the mental shelf life of “The Lord of the Rings” tomes or Jack London’s excursions into the wild. I approached “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” from a merely cinematic perspective. And, despite its battles and bluster, it’s rather a bore. "I never knew it was so easy to add lightsaber effects to any YouTube clip. Earlier this week, when I wrote about the new Clone Wars lightsaber game for the Nintendo Wii, I saw it done with the infamous “Star Wars Kid” video (see it here). "For more than a year, I've done my best to avoid seeing "300." From the first time I saw its TV spot, Zach Snyder's movie gave me unavoidable unappealing vibes. They were the same vibes I get after seeing spliced highlights of a Jet Li or Jason Statham movie...or "War," the Li-Statham movie. The guaranteed superfluous action and skimpy screenplay would probably be fun, but with so many other titles available, such releases fall into oblivion, possibly to be passed over in the grocery store bargain bin 6 years down the road. I love graphic novels and I love graphic novels by "300" creator Frank Miller + their adapted films ("Sin City"), so what was it that convinced me to see this loud, dumb, overhyped movie? A graphic novel. Alan Moore's "Watchmen" is a towering achievement in the illustrated genre. The story of retired superheroes lured back into caped action is the most layered graphic novel I've experienced, and though I prefer Art Spiegelman's "Maus," Moore's work takes spandex ... "

"After the enormous success of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, there were bound to be more swashbuckling seafarers arriving in theaters. And finally the next big deal pirate project has the go from DreamWorks to set sail. This one will probably be a little less fantastical, though. According to Variety, the plan is to have David Franzoni (Gladiator) script a new film about the notorious real-life pirate Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard). The infamous character has already been portrayed in a number of biopics, including Raoul Walsh’s over-the-top 1952 effort and a more recent Hallmark-produced miniseries starring Angus Macfadyen. But none before have had the benefit of being shepherded by former Philadelphia 76ers owner Pat Croce, who actually owns a pirate museum down in Key West. "There is so much going on these days in the marketing of The Dark Knight (see Chris Thilk’s most recent update/summary here), but Warner Bros. may be wasting a lot of time and money on its campaigns. If we’re to believe an AP story from yesterday, there’s already enough interest in the Batman Begins sequel coming from two separate directions: comic book fandom (”the magnitude of a comic-book franchise with an illustrious 70-year history”) and, of course, the cult of celebrity death (”arguably the biggest movie featuring a posthumous role in Hollywood history.”). "Upon watching Alexander, I found myself with a lot of questions, and very few answers. In fact, it has been almost four years since I saw this film, and yet I remain haunted by the many inconsistincies and poor choices which were displayed in the film.I had the unfortunate privelage of seeing this movie in a sold out theatre where I was forced to take in the action from the front row. From that vantage point I watched one of the most uninspired, miserable films I have ever seen. If the constant comments by the audience throughout the length of the film were any indication--I was not alone in my feelings toward this movie.Alexander, as you may recall, was a heavily anticipated movie and rightfully so with its ridiculously large budget and star studded cast. As the film opened, I have to admit, I was hoping for an epic of Gladiator like proportions. Unfortunately, Collin Farrell is no Russel Crowe, and the film did not take very long to unravel.Rather than discuss the plot, whic ... "
