Directed by Zach Braff.
In the wake of his success on the hit NBC sitcom Scrubs, actor Zach Braff made his debut behind the camera writing, directing, and starring in this bittersweet romantic comedy. Braff plays Andrew Largeman, a young man who has just received word of his mother's passing. With this news, Andrew returns to the town in which he grew up, where he is greeted by his father, Gideon (Ian Holm), a psychiatrist. In addition to mourning the loss of his mother, Andrew is also attempting to adjust to life without the emotionally numbing antidepressants that he has recently opted to discontinue using. Gradually, with the absence of the pills, his reconnection with his past, and the introduction of Sam (Natalie Portman), a woman who would seem to have little in common with him, into his life, Andrew is able to see the potential for some positive changes. Also starring Jean Smart and Peter Sarsgaard, Garden State was once titled Large's Ark and premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Well now that it's over, I guess I'll chime in. My idea is to recast this film with characters from other movies. Meaning, new actors, playing the Princess Bride character as a character they have allready played in another movie. This would probably be the worst movie ever so.............. here it goesWestley ..... Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman as the retarded football player in the made for TV movie referenced in Garden StateButtercup / The Princess Bride ..... Christina Ricci as Rae from Black Snake Moan - this will probably change the rating a bit.Inigo Montoya ..... John Turturro as Jesus The Bowler in The Big LebowskiPrince Humperdinck ..... "I'm having some difficulty actually deciding if some people qualify or not.Certainly Orson Welles, if he was not already often in contention for the greatest director of all time would have been well known as one of the greatest actors.Roman Polanski is surely more well known as a director, but has done just as much acting, and was an actor before being a director. The same with Vittorio De Sica. Many comedians are just as recognizable as actors, writers, and directors. Often doing all roles in the same film. Think of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Or Jaques Tati. Today think of Mel Brooks, Harold Ramis, Christopher Guest. Terry Jones??Also many kung fu stars. Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow, Sammo Hung. And what about classical actors where, acting is clearly where they are most recognized, but they are also renown in directing of theatre and film. A production directed by Lawrence Olivier or Kenneth Branagh is surely not an anomaly.I'm actually most interested in a po ... " [More]

"I would rather highlight conventional foreign films like Captain Abu Raed than conventional indie dramedies like Patrick Sisam’s The Year of Getting to Know Us, but I can’t seem to find any better trailers for movies playing at Sundance today. So, here’s a look at one of the more mainstream selections screening at this year’s festival. It has a lot of the generic traits typically found in star-studded Sundance darlings, such as the dysfunctional family, the dying parent and the homecoming plot. In many ways it’s like Garden State (Sundance class of 2004) all over again, but instead of having the main character meet an annoying new love interest, he already has a live-in girlfriend of three years who he reluctantly allows to finally meet his family. I spy a last-minute airport scene in there, too. Good job on the unoriginal ideas there, Sisam (or is that co-writer Rick Velleu or short-story writer Ethan Canin’s contribution?). The Year of Getting to Know Us has two things going for ... " [More]

"This film happened to be the film that I decided to test features of the Netflix site with, including the mechanisms involved in reorganizing one's queue. Garden State was, through no fault of its own, kind of far down on the list, which I was rather appalled at. So, then I started tinkering with reordering and the like, and, long story short (too late), through no relationship to the previous film, Garden State was the next film in my slow but steady movie consumption of late.I have been wanting to watch this film for a while too. I am not an avid follower of Scrubs, but I do like Zach Braff quite a bit, whether on that show or in other projects. I also think Natalie Portman is an excellent actress given whatever material she is handed (including those Star Wars prequels, but let's not mention them anymore here). I didn't know much about the premise of the film; it was these two actors and also Ian Holm (Bilbo!) that drew me to this one.Mr. Braff plays Andrew Larg ... " [More]

"It's nice to see Natalie Portman in something other than Sci-Fi dreck or Action-Adventure mediocrity. She hasn't been in something this good since her performances in "The Professional" and "Beautiful Girls". Zach Braff is equally as appealing, and I found the tone and story to be thoughtful, funny, quirky and aptly melancholy. All of this, and the soundtrack fits like a glove. If you're a fan of Wes Anderson's work, chances are you'll appreciate this film. " [More]

"I saw Wristcutters: A Love Story at Sundance 2006, and I enjoyed it a lot. A semi-deconstructed road-trip rom-com set in an alternate afterlife reserved for suicides, it seemed like the kind of small-scale, entirely winning if not entirely original indie that you used to be able to happen upon late at night on IFC and fall in love with. Even though it was a touch smarter and darkly cooler than Garden State (no one in Wristcutters would have the dizzy gall to suggest that The Shins could change a person’s life), I really thought it had a chance at breaking through to the same audience. Shows what I know–apparently, there was only room for one unexpectedly “heartwarming” road-trip movie with the set design of a music video at Sundance that year, and at the end of a successful 2006 festival run, Wristcutters all but disappeared. Throughout 2006, I heard a few rumors of release dates, and read that it might go straight to DVD, but nothing ever happened. And then Courtney Solomon entere ... " [More]

"The Rage in Placid Lake is a beautiful, funny encouragement to lead a less structured life in order to achieve greater happiness. The titular character, so named by his anti-establishment parents in hopes of him living up to that image, is a human Gumby in the middle of a frantic social tug-of-war. Placid’s parents use him as a guinea pig for exercising their oddball societal beliefs. Their clueless experiments consistently transform Placid into a lamb to the slaughter, similar to Marcus in About A Boy. The continual adolescent opposition Placid faces as a result of his stark differences is personified by the brutal ostracism and fists of three bullies. These abusive classmates are the epitome of the Lake parents’ collective enemies and yet the adults continue to assume that their failed vicarious efforts are beneficial to their son. Poor, mangled, confused Placid. And then there is Gemma, Placid’s lifelong platonic female friend who has been the only rock in ... " [More]

"Why is it that every single "Indie" film I come across, every SINGLE one mind you, has the word "Pretentious" written in the tag-space? What on earth makes a film pretentious? What does the word "pretentious" mean, exactly? Well, I just so happen to have a dictionary here with me, so let's dig in, kids. Pretentious: "1. Making claims, explicit or implicit, to some distinction, importance, dignity, etc. 2. showy; ostentatious." Hmmm. Doesn't seem to be answering my question too well. How about the word "pretense"?Pretense: "1. a claim: pretension: as, he made no pretense to being infallible. 2. a false claim or profession: as, a pretense of friendship. 3. a false show of something. 4. something said or done for show. 5. a pretending, as at a play; make-believe. 6. a false reason; pretext. 7. pretentiousness." Well, if your going strictly by dictionary deffinition alone, I'd say the mainstream stuff that the nameless, faceless "they" of hollywood keeps spewing forth is m ... " [More]

A sort of The Graduate-lite, the directorial debut of actor and former film-school student Zach Braff is a little too strident in its efforts to reach for cinematic relevance, but it's also ultimately a moving comedy drama that skillfully renders a generation's grudging acceptance of its own thwarted yearnings and subsequent frustration. Andrew Largeman (Braff) and his buddies are casual about everything -- death, drug abuse, rejection, love. Even their rage seems muted, spent, and running on fumes. Garden State asserts that such ennui has its yin and yang, that it allows for a certain bemused detachment from life, but that its price (disconnection from other humans) is probably too high. It's a marvelously self-assured tone and message, impressively aware from a first-time writer/director. Braff also displays great skill with his cast, eliciting superb performances from Natalie Portman and the reliable Peter Sarsgaard. Not to call it a perfect film: interesting characters appear once and then never again, for no particular reason other than injecting self-conscious quirkiness, and the style sometimes overwhelms the content as the filmmaker reaches, clumsy and ham-fisted, for auteur status with over-thought shots and techniques. There's enough substance in Garden State, however, to inspire confidence in Braff as a creative force and anticipation for his next project behind the camera. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
