"Anticipating the worst from Diane English’s new remake of The Women is not just typical low expectations regarding remakes in general. My dread is specifically based on dissatisfaction with remakes and updates of films from the 1930s, arguably the best decade in cinema (it is certainly my favorite). While I may recognize and appreciate some favorable redos, such as DePalma’s Scarface (of which I’ve never really been a fan), Mazursky’s Down and Out in Beverly Hills and the multiple repeats from Hitchcock, I am more often disappointed with attempts to recreate ‘30s classics, even when I approach them with already low standards. Worst, for me, doesn’t necessarily have to do with the quality of the film alone, especially when related to remakes and updates. "Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes.For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ... "

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry. Flash Gordon I guess this was one of the first huge Sci-Fi epics made for the screen. Maybe it was the introduction of Sci-Fi as we think of it into popular culture. This series may even have even shaped how we think about these kinds of fantastical outer space travels with strange creatures, humanoid aliens, and all kinds of fantastical technology or the fact that we even think of these things at all. At it's time it was the most successful serial ever. And although over time these kinds of movies began to lose less interest and were relegated to smaller budget productions, when Star Wars revitalized this genre it was maybe just recapturing much of what was original created with Flash Gordon.
