Directed by Renny Harlin
Planned for years, but plagued by problems such as the death of director John Frankenheimer before production had even begun and the exiting of star Liam Neeson, the fourth installment of the Exorcist saga finally got off the ground with Paul Schrader (Affliction, Auto Focus) behind the camera and Stellan Skarsgård filling the shoes left empty by Neeson. But the pitfalls didn't stop there, as Morgan Creek decided against their initial approach assigned to Schrader after seeing his finished cut, and hired Renny Harlin to reshoot the film with extra gore and head-spinning nastiness. The first prequel in the series, Exorcist: The Beginning is based upon events occurring before the first film. Playing the character made famous by Max von Sydow in the earlier films, this entry finds Skarsgård as a young Father Merrin facing true evil for the first time in Africa in the wake of World War II. When a young local boy begins to behave strangely, it becomes more and more apparent to Merrin that the child is a victim of demonic possession. Boasting a first-time screenplay by best-selling novelist Caleb Carr (The Alienist), Exorcist: The Beginning features a supporting cast headed by Izabella Scorupco (GoldenEye) and James D'Arcy (Master And Commander). ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"This is a very worthy addition to the horror franchise that is The Exorcist. Now as a prequel the story focuses on the origin of Father Merrin ( one of the priests that exorcised Regan in the original) who is played brilliantly by Stellan Skarsgard. It takes place in Africa and the cinematography and direction are very good. The only qualm I have about this film is that I think there is way to much CGI. The original Exorcist was made in 1973 way before computer graphics where invented so the " [More]

"Without a doubt, my favorite series out there would have to be The Exorcist. I know many would say that the film should have stopped with the first, which was a masterpiece of supsense and horror, but I have honestly enjoyed the subsequent films as well. I think part of it was the spiritual/religious overtones of the films, which I've always found fascinating. Some have been better than others, and arou " [More]

"[quote user="divinemsjunebugSo Gor, did you see the PREquel movies to the Exorcist and what did you think of them?[/quote] I saw the Renny Harlin version with Stellan Skarsgard as a young Father Merrin and I thought it was a pretty cool movie indeed! I would LOVE to see the Paul Schraeder version because he is one of my favorite directors... " [More]

"[/quote] I willl defend "Exorcist II" till the day I die. John Boorman (Deliverance) is the director. Linda Blair is 18 and she is fucking gorgeous... What is NOT to like about this movie? Richard Burton is the freaking PREIST for Christ's sakes! Sure, it was NOWHERE near the original (surprise), but it was a pretty respectable sequel that got my attention.... < GOR > [/quote] I have to admit, the first time I saw Exorcist II, I thought it was a little lame but I was comparing i " [More]
