Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak
One of the most popular and influential video games ever makes its way to the big screen in this sci-fi thriller. A coalition of Earth's scientific and military interests have established a research colony called Olduvai on the planet Mars, but one day all communication from the outpost stops and no one can tell what has happened -- though the final messages suggest it's not good. Believing foul play may have overtaken Olduvai's crew, the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, a team of specially trained military personnel, are deployed to investigate the situation and, if necessary, eliminate the invaders. But Sarge (Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban), leaders of the RRTS team, soon discover the situation is far more grim than they could have imagined. An experiment on Olduvai has very literally opened a portal to Hades, and a variety of savage and demonic creatures have overtaken the colony. Now the RRTS must seal off Olduvai, close off any access to Earth, and exterminate the satanic beasts before they can kill again. Doom also stars Rosamund Pike (as Dr. Grimm), Dexter Fletcher, Ben Daniels, and Deobia Oparei. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"There really is no demand for a sequel to Street Fighter, the video game-to-film adaptation that had the sad distinction of being Raul Julia’s final film. And while the franchise is alive and well through parody (College Humor’s Street Fighter: The Later Years) and a fourth–technicall " [More]

"I have been a fan of the game Doom since it first came out, so I really wanted to like the movie. Alas, while it had some moments, it didn't have enough of them. Certainly not the worst movie of the year, but not worth a sequel unless they do a much better job. " [More]

"Let me start by saying I have only played a little of the doom franchise, most notably Doom 3. So writing this review I won't be heavily relating it towards the games, as I don't know that much about them to compare. I will say that I heard a lot of negative feedback about this flick and that I don't feel like it's getting the recognition it deserves. I also feel that once a game franchise is m " [More]

While far from prize-winning material, the big-screen adaptation of Doom remains a breezy time at the movies that captures the feel of the game but adds little to the franchise's legacy. Taking its cues literally from Doom 3, the movie meticulously translates the game's sounds, images, and even first-person perspective shots into easy-to-stomach celluloid schlock for the masses. Sadly, apart from aesthetics, there's not much more that connects the game and the film. They're both fun rides that wear their inspirations on their sleeve, just as any comparisons to Aliens becomes a no-brainer when one stops and thinks about the source material. As it stands, the movie gives the audience just enough action to chew on without pandering to the audacious special effects that have hampered other video-game adaptations. While the plot is fairly brainless, there's just enough bullet-ridden action and blood-soaked gore to vaguely bring to mind the big-muscle intensity and horror elements that have made the game successful. However, those looking for the ultimate translation will most likely be disappointed with this modestly budgeted production. It certainly tries and is aided by The Rock's never-ending charisma, but the Doom film isn't the end-all-be-all movie that it should be. Fans of the third game have overwhelmingly stated their distaste for the adaptation, which could have been averted if the filmmakers would have only embraced the hellish monstrosities instead of focusing more on half-baked zombie adversaries. Separated from it's source material, though, the film remains a dumb and fun action ride, and sometimes that goes a long way for like-minded audiences looking for a good time. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
