"SouthSide Works Cinema shows a Cult Movie once a month. Today it was Donnie Darko. I discovered this movie a couple of years back on DVD and was enthralled by it's mysterious and disturbing story and was overjoyed to get the chance to finally see it on the big screen. It was a terrific experience and intensified the fantastic visuals and oppressive soundtrack. If you have not yet seen this movie, do so immediately! ;) " [More]

"Are you one of the many sci-fi and comic book geeks who’d be more interested in Push were it not for Dakota Fanning? Sure, the precocious child star is now a teen actress (she’s about to turn 15), yet that probably makes you even more worried about her appearance in the movie. But what can you do? She’s literally everywhere this week – voicing the title character in the animated Coraline and starring in two new video releases, Hounddog and The Secret Life of Bees, both of which were released Tuesday. In the tradition of child actors continuing careers into adolescence, it’s only a matter of time before she ruins a movie that would have been better without her. We’ll have to wait until this weekend to see if that time is now, with Push, but in the meantime let’s take a look at some of the past offenders in this tradition. Most of the following " [More]

"The Two Boots Pioneer Theater in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which opened in February 2000, quickly developed a track record of supporting niche interests. It’s where the Donnie Darko cult was born, via midnight screenings that began four months after Richard Kelly’s film had opened in mainstream theaters and lasted for 28 consecutive months. It’s also where a number of recent indies we’ve supported at Spout had their first and/or only New York engagements, including Dance Party USA, LOL, Jones and Kamp Katrina. And now it’s gone, the victim of a rent increase and general economic fatigue. The theater had its last screening on Halloween night (of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, natch) — but with no direct competition in the area (we love [More]

"I suggest not seeing the Director's Cut, but the theatrical release on DVD with extra material. The movie is confusing, and the extra materials will add some information where you need it, instead of the director trying to fill it in for you. Ultimately, the movie is a failure, but a noble failure. Richard Kelly just didn't have the experience to pull it off. The direction is great, the visuals are stunning, and the acting is first rate. Kelly just couldn't put the movie together well enough to get it to make sense. The first try he left too much out; with the director's cut, he put too much in. I recommend the movie, but you have to be willing to think about it. " [More]

"Everybody remembers the bigger name Coen Bros. regulars, such as John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Frances McDormand, Billy Bob Thornton and now George Clooney. And of course, there are the one-shot stars, like Nicolas Cage, Gabriel Byrne, Jeff Bridges, William H. Macy, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Moore, Paul Newman, Albert Finney, Woody Harrelson, Tim Robbins and now Brad Pitt and John Malkovich. But who ever talks about Michael Lerner? He received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Barton Fink, yet he never seems to get the same kind of respect that Javier Bardem gets, and it’s not just because Bardem won the award for No Country for Old Men. With their new film, Burn After Reading, the Coens have again recast some lesser known character actors that I hope get the recognition they deserve. Both Richard Jenkins and J.K. Simmons have previously appeared in the Coens’ films, but each has seriously risen in notability since their last collaboration with the f ... " [More]

"A cluster***k of political, religious and scientific symbology, Southland Tales is a dozen or so films commenting on the current state of our nation boiled down into a two hour something or rather. Seemingly injecting the major thematic elements of Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch and Robert Altman, Richard Kelly has made a film that continues down the same road that he pioneered in Donnie Darko and managed to go further into the abyss of his own freakish mind to create something that just needs to be seen. "After much deliberation, I have created a comprehensive list of my current 30 favorite movies ever made. I am still debating about it in my head, considering there are still so many more movies that I want to include on it. However, I widdled it down to 30. I'll reveal them periodically over the next few days, with my absolute favorites (1-10) having long explanations, and then after that getting shorter and shorter. Here's numbers 21-30 with brief explanations.21. The Shining Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of horror is in my humble opinion the scariest film ever made. I have never seen anything that has contained as much suspense and as much sheer terror as this movie. And while I usually don't like the genre a whole lot, I love this movie.22. The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up There was a tie here, and I figured I could group them together since it's the same crew. Apatow's movies have changed comedy, and both of these films are almost beyond hila ... " [More]

"*** stars (out of 5) Directed By: Arie Posin Starring: Jamie Bell, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close & William Fichtner Synopsis: The film begins in modern suburbia when Dean Stiffle, (Jamie Bell) a local teen finds the body of his friend Troy who has just committed suicide. Thinking that nobody would care, he doesn’t even bother to tell anybody. Troy had been the high-schools unofficial "pharmaceutical rep" and he owes some a very determined group of kids a very large stash. After kidnapping Dean’s brother, the group instructs Dean to sneak into Troy's room and use the drugs to ransom his brother. The only problem is they kidnapped the wrong kid. Review: I will start by saying one thing; you absolutely cant tell that this is Arie Posin's directorial debut. I think he did an exceptional job with a mediocre script (which he co-wrote). Although there are some lapses in continuity in the film, the overall flow was relatively slow, so " [More]

"What can i say abou tthis film? Amazing, mindboggling, genius... i could go on. This is probably my favorite film ever. Had heard nothing about this film then one evening while i was in college me and a mate rented it out mainly due to the weird rabbit on the cover. Needless to say we were amazed by it. First time we sa, hadn't a clue wat is was about. Kept theorising about it during the second, third, fourth time we saw it. Think i finally have a view on the story now.The entire film is a masterpiece. The music in this film is fantastic. Some of it is so haunting which fits perfectly with the story. And what about Frank. freaky as feck. Anyway for anyone who hasn't see this film, i really envy you because you are in for a treat. " [More]
