"Black Friday is a scary time for shoppers in any given year. The crowds, the lines, the difficulty finding parking — all these and more are common annoyances on the day after Thanksgiving, as millions upon millions of Americans begin the Christmas season by making a run for the shopping malls and department stores in hopes of finding the best bargains. This year, of course, the economic downturn will make the day even worse than usual. The stores may be desperately holding the biggest sales we’ll ever witness, but lowest prices aren’t quite low enough for those who are broke or bankrupt. So, you may stay home this Friday. Perhaps you’ll at least make some minor online purchases, because you’re a patriotic, consuming American and it’s kind of like an unofficial holiday in our capitalist democracy. But don’t not go out to the mall simply because of the craziness potentially happening on its many floors of fashion and furnishings. You mustn’t be frightened of the crowds. Just recall a ... "It’s been more than 100 years since the Philadelphia Quakers changed their name to the Philadelphia Philadelphians, which was thankfully shortened to “Phillies” very quickly, probably by printers who were afraid of using up all of their ‘P’s in the printing press. Since being founded in 1883, they’ve been one of the most tenacious teams in baseball, winning six pennants, and the World Series in 1980. In fact, in all of American sports (not just baseball), the Phillies are the team that’s been in one city with one name for the longest time. They’re one game away from another World Series win tonight, despite being the Major League team with the most losses in history. We celebrate their scrappiness with a list of quintessential Philadelphia movies. Check them out after the break. [More]

"Sometimes I really wish David Bordwell’s blog permitted comments. Mostly it’s better that it doesn’t, but the man’s last post has made me want to discuss the art of movie titles for a whole week now. And it didn’t help that coinciding in time with Bordwell’s post was another one of those sidebars in Entertainment Weekly pointing out some new movies with misleading titles. Yes, Lakeview Terrace does sound like a period romance, as do many other badly titled films (Elizabethtown and Wicker Park come to mind). This weekend also sees two new movies employing the method of borrowing song titles, which are typically not appropriate (Ghost Town seems more like a horror western hybrid, while My Best Friend’s Girl[More]

"Thursday, October 30, Grand Rapids, Michigan. A seemingly average midwestern city. Until the zombies invade. A throng of at least 3,370 zombies flowed through the downtown streets (it’s very likely it was over 4,000) to try and break the world record for the largest zombie walk. The event, organized by college sophomore Rob Bliss, shattered the previous record of 1,375, set just a few days earlier in the Pittsburgh suburb of Monroeville. If Monroeville sounds familiar to zombie fans, it should. The Monroeville Mall was the setting of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. While Grand Rapids may not have the zombie pedigree of Monroeville, it’s no less qualified for an invasion of the living dead. Annalee Newitz recently wrote a post on io9 charting " [More]

"Dawn of the Dead is among the greatest of all horror films, and certainly the greatest zombie picture. Like the best fantastic fiction, it uses a premise that absolutely could not occur in real life to tell us truths about our own, real lives that are as relevant today as they were in 1978. Taking place an indeterminate amount of time after Night of the Living Dead (and featuring none of its characters), Dawn opens as a chaotic Philadelphia news station reports the United States and perhaps is overrun by a plague of re-animated zombies. No one knows how or why it started, but it is clear the society is on the verge of breaking down. The news anchor, Frances (Gaylene Ross) and her boyfriend Stephen (David Emge) have a secret plan to escape the city in the news helicopter that Stephen pilots. They are joined by two survivors from a National Guard assault on a zombie stronghold- Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott Reininger). The four make a stop at a shopping mall for supplies, but qu ... "I was 19 years old during the period of late '79- early 1980. And it is during that time that I wandered into a seedy, downtown Denver 'movie-house'. The only thing I knew about the movie I was about to see was the name on the marquee... "ZOMBIE"... I was STUNNED! This Movie Was PHENOMENAL! Up to this point, the 'goriest' movies I had ever seen would be "Night Of The Living Dead" and "The Exorcist" ... (I had not yet seen "Dawn Of The Dead" which was released the year before...) ... and some B-movie Drive-In fare like "Last House On The Left" and "The Toolbox Murders" and [More]

"I can't believe all the things that Argento did to this classic? Why? Why? Why? So, really, you can most certainly skip the European version. (Although it is really cool to hear Ken Foree dubbed in German. Actually, it is awesome to hear the most famous line "When there is no more room left in hell..." in German." ) " [More]

"Dèmoni (Demons)Watched this one on Halloween night at a friends house. He has a day long marathon of different horror movies every Halloween. Usually ones he has never seen before. I caught a couple of them.I went last year as well, and I'd say this is probably the best one I've seen so far. I'm not usually a huge fan of just random low budget horror movies. I think if you just select one randomly from the gigantic pool, the chances are I am going to find it crappy and boring. However I had more fun with this one that I had expected. It's still nothing astounding, but it's a good one to watch with a group of friends. In the vein of Dawn of the Dead, there are just plain amusing ways of people getting killed and devoured by zombie/vampire/demon-like creatures. Directed by Mario Bava's son Lamberto as well.Makes amusing use of various unrelated items of badass quality such as samurai swords and motorcycles. And there is also a crashing helicopter ... "After being a little disappointed with the first film of this franchise, I came in with low expectations for this film, but was pleasantly surprised at how great this film turned out to be. Filmed nearly a decade after the original Night of the Living Dead, the Dawn of The Dead takes up where the last one left off. Being made a generation later really added a lot to the film. It's images are more disturbing, the plot more engaging and the film more sophisticated.Unlike the first film that took place pretty much in a farm house, this film takes place at a mall populated by a group of bandits and a gazillion zombies that want to eat their flesh. The film takes the viewer from the first week of the zombie uprising to several months later. One of the things I really enjoyed about the film was the fact that it was made in the 1970's. While there wasn't any references to disco, the culture of the 70's really came through on the film. I also liked that Romero left the ... " [More]

"Alright, Puhner has reviewed these all fairly highly, yet they reside on a list claiming them to be "stinkeroos." I think not. Some of the most cynical and inventive movies I have ever seen. I LOVE the Dead movies. Even the remake of Dawn was awesome. For those that have not seen these, they are zombie movies. They are THE zombie movies. Evil Dead are NOT zombie movies, they are comedies. If you want Zombies you want Fulci and Romero. Romero's Night, Dawn, Day and Land of the Dead movies are cynical commentaries of America, it's policies, it's insanity, it's glutony, etc. Made with fairly tight budgets and a whole lot of love, these movies can be watched in many different ways. They are comedies, they are horror movies, and they are social commentary. These are not your typical horror movies. Fulci's zombies are focused on terror. Rotten, lumbering corpses taking over the Earth and killing everyone. Another wonderful take on the subject and actually scary. Granted Zombie aka Zomb ... " [More]
