"What do you get when you combine the acting talents of young Dakota Fanning with an all-star cast and mix it with the classic tale of a pig named Wilbur and his spider friend, Charlotte? The answer is easy. You get what appears to be a great film at first look, but really is only a fair adaptation which pales in comparison to the book in which it is based on. Gary Winick's take on E.B. White's 1952 novel 'Charlotte's Web' tells the tale of a young pig named Wilbur, who here is voiced by Dominic Scott Kay. Late one night just as he is about to be slaughtered for being a runt, he is saved by a young girl. Fern, played by Dakota Fanning, rushes in and promises to care for him and in doing so, inevitably ends up spending all her free time with him. Soon though Wilbur grows to be a bit too big to remain in the house. Fern's mother then decides it is time for him to go and live across the road in her uncle's barn. Reluctantly, Fern agrees. Once there Wilbur, ... " [More]

"I thought Charlotte's Web is far from a modern day classic, but it's a faithful adaptation of the book. Julia Roberts' soothing voice was perfect casting -- I can't imagine anyone else playing Charlotte's voice and making her, well, less creepy. The movie had a wonderful message. Dakota Fanning was fine, but the movie didn't focus much on the human characters so it didn't make a difference one way or another. " [More]

"My wife and I decided to watch the new version of Charlotte's web. It was so bad we decided not to finish it. The casting is terrible. No one who knows anything about Dakota Fanning can imagine her pushing a little pig around in a baby stroller and whining to her mom about not being able to say goodnight to Wilbur in the barn. Julia Robert's voice as Charlotte is so distinctive, every time she spoke it pulled me out of the movie. As for the other animals - I just found their voices annoying. You can tell they tried to make this a magical movie, but it just doesn't work. The plot feels like it's plodding along and nothing feels special. I didn't feel like I cared about any of the animals. I give it one pig out of five. " [More]

"I saw Charlotte's web in the Theater with my Little Sister, she had already seen it with her class, but wanted to go again with me on Saturday. She has minor ADD and about half way through she said "Let's get out of here and go ice-skating." but I convinced here to stay until the end when I told her that I read the book when I was her age and was really excited to see it in the theater. She said, "This is a book too? I guess I'll let you stay, this time. Next time we see it, we're going ice skating before it's over." Of course she said it loudly and we got a few 'SHHHH's :-) I actually enjoyed it, was sad when Charlotte died int he end, but she does such a good job or explaining why it's her turn to pass on, that it's not traumatic in any real way. If you thought the book was appropriate for your kids, this movie will be too. It follows the orignal quite closely and demonstrates that children's movies don't have to be annoying and fast-paced to get our kids' attention... The f ... " [More]
