"The soundtrack to Twilight is currently the number one album in the U.S., and a band called Paramore is experiencing great success by association. They have two songs featured on the soundtrack, one of which, “Decode,” has been released as the album’s lead single. Though Paramore have been around for some time and were even nominated for a Grammy earlier this year, they have never charted quite as well on the Billboard Hot 100 as they currently are through this Twilight connection. And chances are they’ll never have quite as big a hit again. Countless other artists have had their biggest break with a song prominently featured on or released through a movie soundtrack, and many of these artists disappeared into obscurity afterwards. Or, at best, they maintained a modest career, never achieving the kind of chart-topping high they once received courtesy of a hit film. SpoutBlog has compiled a list of ten such “one-hit wonders,” though we made some rules and exceptions in order to both ... "

"Ashley Judd starring in a horror movie directed by "Exorcist" wizard William Friedkin. What can possibly go wrong with that premise? More than you can possibly want to know. Not only is "Bug" the worst movie to grace our multiplex screens this year (yes, "Pathfinder" and "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" can move over), it is entirely possible it is the worst movie of the last five years (even worse than last year´s snore-inducing remake of "All the King´s Men"). Ashley Judd plays Agnes, a woman living in a motel and working in a seedy bar. Her ex-something (we never really know is it´s a boyfriend or husband) is getting out of jail and, according to Agnes, has been calling her and not saying a word. A co-worker, waitress RC (Lynn Collins), brings a quiet stranger over for drinks and he ends up staying the night on her couch. Later, he confides in her he escaped from a military hospital where the government was running tests on him. And just to spice up ... "

"Bug is a masterpiece. It is a compelling character study, a romance, a horror film, and a thriller incorporating elements of science fiction. It is a bold return to greatness from William Friedkin, who made two of the best films of the 70's, The French Connection and The Exorcist. Bug is even better than those films, and will certainly be on my list of the best films of 2007. It is often said that is harder to make a movie based on a play than one based on a novel, because the theatrical form is inherently uncinematic. Aside from a few early scenes set a bar and a supermarket, the entire film of Bug is set in a cheap Oklahoma hotel room. The story involves a woman named Agnes White. Agnes is played by Ashley Judd, in a performance that deserves an Academy Award. She is an ordinary woman who has lived a tragic life. Her abusive ex-husband (Harry Conneck, Jr.) has just been released from prison and harassing her, and she still has not recovered from the disappearance of her y ... "

"Like many people, I thought Bug was a horror movie, but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. Instead, this is an intriguing psychological study of the illusions we'll endure for the promise of love. The movie that comes to mind is Richard Linklater's Tape. It is perhaps just the off-Broadway feel. Night of the Living Dead has a similar economy. Ashley Judd is excellent, but the movie's main flaw is with her character. There is not enough to convince me of her desperation. Sure, she is a white trash woman with a lot to regret, but her endurance is what I am most convinced of. Harry Connick, Jr. is more

"Time to play some catch-upI heard many bad things about Bug, but I think that's because it was marketed as a flesh-eating virus horror movie. It's really more of a psychological thriller. Based on a play, almost all of the action takes place in a hotel room. Director William Friedkin ("The Hunted") manages to keep the tension up, despite the lack of scenery change. Ashley Judd ("Come Early Morning") stars as a desperate and lonely woman who falls for a possibly crazy veteran (Michael Shannon, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"). He thinks there's a bug infestation in the hotel room. And the crazy spirals from there. Judd and Shannon really give themselves over to their roles. And the film might not have worked as well otherwise. I was caught up in this from minute one.Despite it's very cool poster and the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Suburban Girl"), The Return is a mess. The premise is good. Gellar has these visions o ... "By Tricia Olszewski Severance is a story of terrible things that couldn’t have happened to funnier people. British writer-director Christopher Smith’s second film (after 2004’s Creep) is a horror movie that thinks it’s a comedy. But it’s not a straight-up joke machine like Shaun of the Dead. Nor is it parodic, like the Scream series. Think more along the lines of what you’d get if the gang from The Office schlepped to the forest for a team-building weekend, only to discover that their bumbling boss may have very well led them to their deaths. The opening-credits scene, which pairs the bouncy oldie “Itchycoo Park” with an image of blood pouring over the face of a man hanging upside-down, is the first sign that Severance is going to be a bit different. The film then backs up to introduce an office manager and his six eye-rolling pawns. They’re from the European branch of Palisade Defence, an international weapons firm, and they ... "

"What has happened the horror genre in the last 30 years? It seems that with the bigger role of special effects in movies, that imagination has gone out the window. In horror, that has become a fatal flaw since what scares us are those things that we don’t see, that we can’t possibly contemplate. This year alone has definitely been an eye-opening experience for me with this genre. First was The Host from Korea that still has one of the more exciting movie monsters in a very long time. Then came the brilliant 28 Weeks Later, which is one of the best movies this year. Now comes the old-school master William Friedkin taking on a low-budget horror film some 30 years after The Exorcist. His new film, Bug, is not just scary, but you are left with a creepy (and crawly) feeling up your spine. The film is based on off-Broadway play by Tracy Letts (who also wrote the screenplay) and stars Ashley Judd in a career-defining role as Agnes. She’s a waitress in a dive out in the mi ... "
