    "After you've seen enough movies by a particular director, you can sort of predict your opinion of the film before you've seen it. This goes beyond guessing whether you'll like it or not, you can often predict why you'll like it, or you won't. That was pretty much true of Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead, which features Scorsese at his best and worth. At his best, there is some real energy, strong visuals, and an utter conviction and sincerity to the filmmaking. At his worst, there are some stock characterizations, an overly serious tone, and, paradoxically, inappropriate comic relief. Bringing Out the Dead has all of these characteristics, rendering the film sometimes great, sometimes annoying and sometimes mediocre. Overall, it's a good film. The film follows a tortured New York paramedic named Frank (Nicolas Cage).
