"It’s only a couple of short weeks before the 2008 Oscar nominees are announced, and the internet is abuzz with prognostications. One hotly debated topic is whether or not Wall-E can pull off a Best Picture nomination, or even a win. It would be the second animated film to be nominated in the category, after Beauty and the Beast, which got the honor before the Animated Feature prize existed. Will the stodgy old Academy seat Wall-E at the kid’s table, giving it an easy win in the animation category, or will it be allowed to play with the big boys? A best pic nomination for Wall-E would be a rare honor for animation in general, but it would also be a long over due rarity for another reason: Wall-E would only be the second best pic nominated film in the history of the Oscars to be set in the future. "This is, in my very humble opinion, Terry Gilliam's best film, but still it falls short of the mark. I really liked the film as it exists in Gilliam's cut (there are two other edits released, and his is 142 minutes long). The story is compelling, but Gilliam, as is so often the case, gets bogged down in special effects that add nothing to the story. The fantasy scenes of our hero (Sam Lowry played by Jonathon Pryce) are very effective, giving us insight into Lowry's character. But the loss of Harry Tuttle in the paper creates confusion, and the samurai doesn't tell us anything we don't already know. In spite of its shortcomings, I really liked the film. When it's intentionally bogged down in bureaucracy, it's both telling and funny. There are great comments on the superficiality of society and the dangers of trusting the bureaucracy. Although I don't call it a success, it does not fail (as The Adventures of Baron Munchausen does). "

"io9 has confirmed an earlier report that Ridley Scott will direct an adaptation of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley’s classic dystopian future novel. Scott says that Leonardo DiCaprio approached him about adapting the book, and it looks like he will star in the film as well. This is exciting news; not only does it herald the return to science fiction for the director of Blade Runner and Alien, it also means that Leo, who is working on a live action adaptation of Akira, has two dystopian future projects in progress. "The Science Fiction Top 10 is notable for having what is arguably the least disputable number one on all of these lists in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Even after two decades, the film remains gorgeous and convincing-looking, and still capable of provoking debate about technology, the nature of intelligence, and humanity's identity and place in the universe. It has left an indelible mark on how the future, and how space and space travel, is visualized and imagined, especially, but not exclusively, on film. It's a masterful work, and it's difficult for me to think of a more deserving selection for the top of this list. At the same time, this Top 10 has its share of both puzzling selections and curious absences.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) at number three leaves much to be desired. "First of all, I would like to say that Pi Day is the worst holiday ever created, and I hope the creators of it die a terrible death (well, maybe not that bad, but I hope they at least get crapped on by a bird). However, since I recently saw Darren Aronofsky's outstanding film Pi, I figured that this holiday was good for something and that I would write something about it.As you can see, I did a recent post on another of Aronofsky's films, The Fountain, and as you can see, I was not a huge fan of it. As a result, I didn't have enormous expectations in seeing this movie. I mean, I remember that Requiem for a Dream was very good, but I saw that about three years ago, and I only saw the R-rated version, not the full one.Anyways, I found Pi to be an absolutely amazing movie. I was actually convinced of how much I was going to like it by the haunting techno music playing while on the menu screen of the DVD.Sean Gullette is surprisingly good as the lead character, a math g ... This is the story of Troy Duffy, writer and director of the cult hit "The Boondock Saints" as told by two of his friends in the documentary "Overnight," which recounts Duffy's meteoric rise and spectacularly depressing fall. "First, I feel I should warn those of you who browse the aisles of your local video store impatiently searching for a title that arouses your interests. You're so impatient, in fact, that by the time you get to the "B's" in the drama section, you're panicked that a good time will escape you, so you reach for "Brazilian Booty Call". Frack! Checked out! But next to it is "Brazil" which is probably a collection of those late-night extravaganzas on E with Brooke Burke. This will do. But that's what I wanted to warn you about... this is not what you're expecting!The movie can probably be summarized by the original poster, illustrated below.
