"###What It’s Like to Chill with the Most Ruthless Men in the WorldRatko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic: Confessions of a Female War Crimes Investigator Retrospectively, it was all so simple, natural and matter of fact being on a boat restaurant in Belgrade, sitting with, laughing, drinking a two hundred bottle of wine and chatting about war and peace while Ratko Mladic held my hand. Mladic, a man considered the world’s most ruthless war criminal since Adolf Hitler, still at large and currently having a five million dollar bounty on his head for genocide by the international community. Yet there I was with my two best friends at the time, a former Serbian diplomat, his wife, and Ratko Mladic just chilling. There was no security, nothing you’d ordinarily expect in such circumstances. Referring to himself merely as, Sharko; this is the story of it all came about. It all began as former United States President Bill Clinton spearheaded NATO’s war against ... "

"Courtesy of my weekly red envelope, my next rented viewing pleasure centered on a very pink diamond and a civil war in Sierra Leone. I watched Blood Diamond because it was a 2006 Oscar nominee, as Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for Best Actor and Djimon Hounsou was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I also know a smattering of people who really dig this flick, so my interest was somewhat piqued. My interest did not stay piqued, unfortunately. Solomon Vandy (Hounsou) loses everything when insurgents in Sierra Leone, circa 1999, attack and burn his village. His family flees, but he is captured and forced to work in mining camps where diamonds are harvested to finance the civil war overwhelming the country - since selling the illegal diamonds to international dealers helps the rebels and terrorists buy weapons. The diamonds are trafficked by paid mercernaries, such as Danny Archer (DiCaprio). Solomon, while in the camp, finds a rare and very large pink diamond that the camp f ... "

"At their very best, movies serve a dual purpose: to entertain and to educate. History is littered with such films, whether they educate about prejudice (as in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"), environmental crises ("An Inconvenient Truth"), history ("Spartacus") or current conflicts, as in "Blood Diamond". A blood diamond, also known as a conflict or war diamond) is a jewel that is sold out of a war zone in order to finance insurgents. In the case of this film, the diamonds financed a rebel group in Sierra Leone, circa 1999. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a smuggler, getting blood diamonds out of Sierra Leone and into neighboring Liberia, where the export of the stone is legal. When he gets arrested, he ends up in jail and hears the rantings of a rebel leader, who claims a fellow prisoner has found a wondrous jewel. This man, Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), was separated from his family when the rebels invaded their village. He doesn't know that his eldest son has been taken i ... "

"City Lights Pictures, in association with Whitest Pouring Films and Kilo Films, presents Manda Bala (Send a Bullet), a film by Jason Kohn. The film runs 85 minutes and is not rated by the MPAA. Based upon some of the hostage video content, this film would likely be rated NC-17 by the MPAA. Manda Bala is a documentary film covering several social and economic issues in modern Brazil. These issues include political corruption, the kidnapping of the wealthy by the poor, and resulting industries such as frog farming, specialized plastic surgery, Helicopter taxi service, and the retrofitting of automobiles to make them more or less bullet-proof.Very well photographed and cleanly edited, Manda Bala, to a great extent, lacks a central theme. This picture has a good, complimenting soundtrack. Because of a mixture of translation and subtitles, the presentation is at times awkward for the viewer. Manda Bala greatly benefits from stunning cinematography. However, while watching this film ... "

"I like action movies, but this one just didn't do it for me. Lots of action, but I guess I was expecting more. The movie had 5 Academy Award Nominations, but I just didn't see why. It was a decent movie, just didn't live up to the hype for me. Story line was fine... It just came across to me as a lesser Indian Jones Movie. I know what to expect in those. Decent rental, glad I did not pay full price. "

"Richard Shepard's The Hunting Party is that wonderfully strange creature known as a political comedy, or more appropriately, a war comedy. It is incredibly funny, but also delves into the horrors of war. It does this without being preachy. It is a rare gift these days. Richard Gere's Simon is wild, spontaneous, and just a little not there. It is not Gere's best part, ,but one of his best. Terrance Howard's Ducky owns the movie. It is his narrative that puts everything in perspective while showing just how absurd it really is. It should be an Oscar part for Howard. Jessie Eisenburg's Benjamin, the green cameraman, is over the top stereotypical until one scene that makes the ending of the film. War films are tough. It is a fine line between Letters from Iwo Jima, and MASH. They can be too preachy like Saving Private Ryan and Blood Diamond. The Hunting Party finds it line in a space that The Last King of Scotland, and

"Very rarely do I get angry at movies, it's just not worth it. Already this year, I've spit blood over World Trade Center and still believe it to be the worst movie of the year. Blood Diamond isn't that bad, but in some ways, it's even worse. I've seen racism in movies, I've seen white guilt, I've even seen message movies that has no clue what its message is. I've just never seen it oozing out of one movie together, believing itself to be superior because it's a big budget Hollywood crapfest with feel-good liberals at the helm. In my humble opinion, the movie should have been called One Good Black Man in Africa. That's because the movie has this opinion of Africa. Djimon Houndsu is that black man, whose trying to raise a family in Sierra Leone while warlords are scavenging the mountains for diamonds. He's eventually taken when a raid occurs. He is put to diamond collecting for these monsters. During his time, he comes across a big pink roc ... "

"I am not normally a fan of Leo but thought he did a very solid job in this film. The film is only let down by the cliched way that the main protaganists manage to avoid getting shot/killed/blown up (most of the time) while all around are meeting their maker. "

"leonardo diCaprio has done it again. but he does not steal away from the story. any movie that is based on a true story must stay true to the story. danny archer played by diCario provided a terrific means of discovering the violence and deceit that takes place everyday. there is a movement called invisible children. it focuses on the children that are being stolen from their families at a young age and are brainwashed and trained to fight for a rebel regime, just as it was depicted. this film brought a lot of controversial subjects to light and did it in a very artistic and entertaining way. the acting was superb on all fronts and the action was driven by all of the hostility and insurgence in those lands. it definitely deserved its nominations! "(From my daily weblog, The Buddha Diaries) Blood Diamond is not a film for the squeamish, or for those who avoid any kind of violence on the screen. The dreadful scenes of civil war depicted in the movie are shown in unsparing detail, with brother fighting pitilessly against brother, and with boy-children trained to kill innocent villagers mercilessly with the assault rifles put into their hands. Manipulated by corporate European diamond traders, these desperate people slaughter each other in pursuit of a global commodity that most of them never even see. The redemption myth centers on the post-colonial adventurer played (extraordinarily well) by Leonardo di Caprio, whose cynicism and greed drive his quest for freedom through the wealth to which diamonds offer a desperate, violence-strewn path. He partners with an unwilling village fisherman whose family has been torn apart by war and who holds the secret to a spectacular fortune in the form of a diamond he has found and hidden ... "
