Directed by Allen Baron
This is a very dark, low-budget crime film which was unjustly neglected until its "discovery" during the film noir revival of the early '90s. Making brilliant use of authentically grimy New York locations, the film tells the story of a hate-filled hitman who comes to the city to murder a gangster on Christmas Eve. Lionel Stander's narration is almost impossibly hard-boiled, making the film an odd blend of grit and camp, but absorbing nonetheless. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

"This film was shot so beautifully that it's really a shame that the film maker decided to use and abuse the voice-over narration to as a substitute for talented acting. Of course, when the acting is as lackluster as it was in this film, you may need that voice-over to actually spell out everything that happened to be going through the character's head. Nonetheless, I really felt that Lionel Stander's second-person recital of the story got in the way of an otherwise completely likable film.

A gritty crime film about lonely professional hit man Frank Bono (Allen Baron), Blast of Silence is interesting in its meticulous detail of the killer's work, a device that has been used in many crime films since. Most of the characters are hoodlums, except for a couple of friends that Frank meets from his past. His relationship with Lorrie (Molly McCarthy) doesn't go anywhere, while Frank's life seems like a completely solitary, friendless existence, where he's scared to get close to anyone and hasn't even bothered to come up with a cover as to what he does for work. The shots of New York in the early '60s are vivid and add to the film's somewhat authentic vibe. And Blast of Silence's end is very much in the tradition of the classic gangster film. ~ Adam Bregman, All Movie Guide
