"Enter my foray into standard comedic fare, courtesy of the wondrous Netflix. Why Blades of Glory? Have you heard about my not-so-secret crush on Will Ferrell? Yes, he's a complete and utter goofball, but that's what I like about him. He's fearless in just how much of an ass he's willing to make of himself in any given picture. As you also may have heard, however, I find Mr. Ferrell's films to be largely hit and miss. Some I find uproariously funny, while others sort of fall into the category of "same old same old," with slight variations given whatever the film is about. Blades of Glory, as it turns out, falls into the latter category, with a twist, or, should I say, a double axle? It's about figure skating, which should, by all intents and purposes, be a treasure trove for comedic gold. And it was...so long as Mr. Ferrell was not involved. Will plays Chazz Michael Michaels, a rebellious rock star of a figure skater, who also happens to be rivals with Jimmy MacElroy (Jon H ... "

"Product placement in movies is now so overdone that we may not even notice it unless a particular film or TV show really hits us over the head with a blatant in-your-face product shot. Otherwise, seeing commercial goods everywhere merely seems like everyday life in capitalist America. Just look at any of the websites that tally up products spotlighted in mainstream movies and you’ll probably be surprised (though not shocked) at how many brands appear in each new release. Did you notice that Blades of Glory contains 38 separate products? Probably not. Many of those products couldn’t have gotten their money’s worth, because the movie doesn’t allow the audience to walk away recalling any one particular item. At a time when TV’s Top Chef and 30 Rock show us how lame blatantly whorish and ironic product placement can get, and while moviegoers are being subjected to more subliminal, suggestive and unintentional advertisements (Speed Racer, Wall-E and

"I guess my perspective as a believer is different because I barely lasted ten minutes into the film. Its rated PG13, but it should really be rated higher then that. Maybe it got better later on, but it just wasn't worth sitting through. There were several other people that left the film even before we had made the same discission. As we were leaving we were joined by many other occupants of the theater. I was shocked because when we asked for a refund- they not only denyed my money back, but they wouldnt let us view another movie instead. The movie was so bad- I wanted my $1.50 back. "

"Hot off the success of Anchorman and Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro. This is a movie that tries to combine the retro 70s elements of Anchorman with the sporting action of Nights and yet ends up a poor cousin to both films. Its familiarity is a substantial part of why this movie fails to impress. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, owner, coach and player for The Tropics, a basketball team that is going nowhere. With the threat of the semi-professional leagues shutting down, Moon aims to score a top four finish for his team that will result in being moved to the prestigious NBA in a merger. Like Anchorman, Ferrell's character struggles with newfound competition, this time from Woody Harrelson as former NBA player Ed Monix. Like Anchorman there is a scene in which Ferrell fights a member of the bear family (though it is far less funny). Like Anchorman, Ferrell's character relaxes musically - this time by spinning lps rather than playing the flute. Sure, there's some fun mome ... "

"Semi-Pro could have been an extremely funny movie. There are moments of absolute hilarity that had me rolling over in my seat, and several scenes during which I was shaking with uncontrollable mirth through several jokes. However, there were also times when I almost turned the movie off because it was so bad...that's something I've never done during a Will Ferrell movie. Will Ferrell tends to keep the jokes coming at an alarming rate, no matter how cheap or stupid the gags are. Even last year's Blades of Glory was funny throughout, and it was probably one of the shallowest comedies I'd ever seen. The thing with Semi-Pro is that it often shies away from things that could've been VERY funny, or just mentions them in passing and only allows for a few chuckles. Half the jokes even feel recycled from Anchorman, such as Jackie Moon's (thankfully underdeveloped) obsession with his hair. Also, the fact that Jackie hasn't even had sex with his smokin' hot wife while hundreds of other ... "

"If you go into this film with as low expectations as I went into it, you'll find you might enjoy this film. Especially if you're in the mood to laugh. A Will Ferrell movie is chock full of his idiosyncrasies, and this movie is no exception. But this time, it's tempered with Jon Heder's brand of humor, and they make a perfect odd couple. I found myself laughing throughout, even at the scatological humor, which most of the time I find to be puerile, but it's actually funny here. The "killer" move they attempt to learn is lifted right from the film "The Cutting Edge", that film being a guilty pleasure of mine, I found extremely humorous. It's definitely not a classic, but it's ludicrousness is good for a few laughs. "

"This has not been a good week to be at New Line Cinema. After getting enslaved by the Time-Warner media monolith last week, the company could not even trumpet its swansong. “Semi-Pro,” the Will Ferrell sports comedy, was the last film to be released while still remaining a “free agent,” tanked at the box office, squeezing out $3 million less than “Meet the Spartans” just a few weeks ago.Let that sink in.Will Ferrell, who has a string of successes and is a worldwide box office “star,” made less in a comedy than a film that’s biggest asset was a Britney Spears clone shaving her head and breakdancing gladiators.Prognosticators are scratching their heads as to how this could happen, offering theories of a tired formula (Will Ferrell + a sport + wacky non-sequiturs = funny), an unstable movie-going weekend (though “Ghost Rider” did better in its second week last year at the same time and “Madea’s Family Reunion ... "By Tricia Olszewski You’ve lied. You’re called on it. What do you do? Certain people crumble. Others, like author Clifford Irving, are further emboldened: They don’t merely deny the charge; they add a few more layers to their story, plus lots of outrage. Irving, the subject of Lasse Hallström’s The Hoax, nearly got away with his most famous lie in the early ’70s, and it was far from a tiny fib. Frustrated by his failure as a writer, Irving pitched a biography on reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, telling publisher McGraw-Hill that Hughes selected him to tell his story. Irving had a handwritten directive from Hughes as evidence and whispered of communications with Hughes. He humbly admitted to the execs that he was as astonished as they were. The thing is, Irving had never met Hughes, and the letters were forged by Irving himself. At least that’s how it started according to the film, which was written by William Wheeler based on Irving&rs ... "

"Going into a movie like Blades Of Glory, you expect certain things. A silly movie with guys in spandex, and lots of laughs. Well I got a silly movie with guys in spandex, but no laughs. there were absolutely no laugh out loud moments in this film for me. In fact I only smiled 2 or 3 times. Will Ferrell, who I love and always seem to enjoy his films is just rehashing stuff in this one. I'm beginning to think that he always does this, and maybe It's starting to get old for me. John Heder is not funny at all. In fact, most of the cast is not funny in this. I really wasn't expecting much, and I'm not giving up on Ferrel, but I'm starting to grow weary of these films. "
