Directed by John Carpenter
Playing in a manner that can be conservatively described as larger than life, Kurt Russell plays a macho truck driver who agrees to go to the San Francisco airport and pick up his friend's (Dennis Dun) fiancee (Suzee Pai, freshly arrived from China. Suddenly, a gang of Chinatown toughs kidnap the girl right before Russell's eyes. After a wild chase sequence, Russell discovers that the girl has been abducted by a genuine, bonafide sorceror (James Hong), the ghost of a 3000 year old warlord. And that's just for starters. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Those with Netflix will know instantly to what I am referring here. Ever log on to Netflix and check out your Recommendations page? I normally don't. I try to use a more intuitive and organic approach to discovering films, and enjoy making it more of a "found item" journey than one in which one corporation tries to force-feed me the goods of another corporation. But every once in a while, I like to check the Recommendations page out, mainly because its a quick and simple way to add more ratin " [More]

"John Carpenter ("Ghosts of Mars")'s 1986 camp classic, Big Trouble in Little China, stars Kurt Russell ("Grindhouse") stars as truck driver Jack Burton, a wise-cracking hard ass (perhaps something he built upon for Death Proof?) who gets tangled up in a mystical battle in Chinatown. The story revolves around a Chinese scorcerer in search of a girl with green eyes. There's action, witty banter, invincible fighters and scorcery. It's good times. " [More]

"What’s the date? May 18th. The summer blockbuster season must be upon us. As an avid moviegoer from the age of 5, I have almost a biohoroscopic feel in my well worn behind that tells me I should be sitting in a movie theater seat, shoving popcorn and cherry coke into my face. Each year, that rush of anticipation and ultimate disappointment rushes through me like the sun rays telling my body to start perspiring like a pig. But, having just been the least useful partner in the birth of a chi " [More]

"Big Trouble in Little ChinaFun and ridiculousness with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell just like Escape From New York only a little more supernatural and goofy. This movie plays off all kinds of stereotypes that must have been and probably still often are held by Americans about Chinese martial arts and Chinese culture in general. "I can remember it like it was yesterday. I had a copy of Big Trouble in Little China on a VHS that was taped off TV one late night. A friend had given it to me because he didn't want his mom to find it. At the time we where probably about 10 or so. It was the TV version you know with commercial breaks nicely cut out with fuzzy pauses still and swear words dubbed over with oh darn. So next time you ar " [More]

Kurt Russell has a great time doing his best John Wayne impersonation in Big Trouble in Little China, an enjoyably offbeat adventure tale from horror director John Carpenter. Borrowing its style from the Indiana Jones movies, Big Trouble is set in the underworld of Chinatown where centuries-old wars are fought with swords and sorcery. Picking up where his Snake Plissken left off in Escape from New York, Russell stars as a cocky, boisterous trucker who gets caught up in the madness. While the fight scenes are sharply choreographed and exciting, Carpenter maintains a humorous, tongue-firmly-in-cheek mood that has as many funny gags as it does duds. The supporting cast -- led by Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong (also in Carpenter's Prince of Darkness), and Kim Cattrall -- also appears to be having a good time with the material. The extensive special effects are not among the best of their time, but they are perfectly in keeping with the film's light tone. Highlights include several garish-looking creatures and excellent aging makeup work on the villain. ~ Patrick Legare, All Movie Guide
