"Here is something that sounds fun: a big budget, old fashioned Hollywood epic, with wonderful vistas, appealing stars and a passionate dedication to excitement and grandeur. That is not something you get in Baz Luhrman's Australia. On the other hand, if you were biting your nails to see an expose of the 1930's Australian cattle industry, have I got a movie for you! Yes, I'm exaggerating, but just a little. The first half of this film is devoted to the breathtakingly exciting subject of whether a Australian cattle barron will get a monopoly over all the beef in the land down under, and believe me, this is not There Will Be Blood with hamburgers. The second half manages to make a subject that is inherently interesting (World War II) boring, using every cliché in the book and sucking any kind of original thought and passion out of the project. Way to go, Baz. If the tone of this review is obnoxious, I must admit that I am not sure that I am not I can convey in words out utterly ... "

"Australia. Wow. It's three hours. It's an experience. I ended up liking it, but the first 45 minutes were so much like Tideland that I threw up a little in my mouth. And, at first, the child's voice-over drove me crazy. I fought through it, and was rewarded with a shirtless Hugh Jackman ("Deception") and some really gorgeous scenery. The film is definitely too long, and I had to remind myself that Nicole Kidman ("The Golden Compass") really can act. She spends the better part of the film running around with her mouth hanging open like Bella in Twilight. I did end up involved in the story, but the film was a bit of a let down. I've seen Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge") do better. Thank you Sci-Fi Channel for The Beast of Bray Road. Based on actual werewolf sightings in Wisconsin, the story follows a new sheriff as he tries to catch the beast terrifying his small town. It's cheesy and ridiculous and I loved pretty much every minute of it. The acting is okay, but the actors seem to be gi ... "

"Is romance dead? David Carr seems to think so, at least in American cinema (both Hollywood and “Indiewood,” as he inclusively clarifies). While celebrating the subway station meet-cute from the beginning of Milk, a scene he claims to be of an increasingly rare sort, Carr states that American filmmakers “can do romantic pathology and entropy, but the kind of love for the ages, a big-movie kind of love? Not so much.” If you agree with him, blame the back-to-back Best Picture winners Titanic and Shakespeare in Love for feeding us the kind of romance that’s so cheesy it clogs our arteries and gives us a coronary. Left with a burst heart and a lack of quality Nora Ephron movies, most of us have been cynics when it comes to love stories these past ten years. Yet cynics can still be swept off their feet, and American filmmakers h "

"One of the most basic methods of criticism is to judge whether a work achieved its purposes. Usually we must infer the purposes, but with the epic Australia (2008), Baz Luhrmann, the man in charge of the project, has explained in several interviews what he was trying to achieve. Although we are entitled to see other intentions in this sprawling movie, I think Luhrmann’s stated purposes manifest themselves clearly. Luhrmann says, as in the classic Gone with the Wind, he wanted to present “a passionate love story that is played out on the canvases of the country’s landscape and historical events.” It is a toss of the coin whether or not the love story works. "Oprah Winfrey can certainly create a best seller when it comes to books, and her pick of the presidential candidates is on his way to the White House. But can she get behind a movie and contribute to its success? 20th Century Fox seems to hope so, because the studio apparently allowed the talk show host to screen an unfinished cut of Australia in preparation for her November 10 show, which featured the film’s stars, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, as well as a live-via-Skype call-in from filmmaker Baz Luhrman. Fortunately for Fox, Oprah raved about the film, and now the media has latched on to the endorsement, creating some much-needed positive buzz for the Oscar-hopeful. Yet there’s a big problem with all the excitement: Oprah’s film recommendations have hardly been sure-fire champs in the past. Case in point: the first title I came upon while searching for Oprah-select cinema was something called

"Eric Fensler created one of the first viral video sensations when he overdubbed the GI Joe PSAs. He’s a rare artist who, like Andy Kaufman, is hard to describe in a sentence or two. One thing is certain, he’d rather not be called, “The GI Joe PSA guy.” Listeners respond with what their families watched on Thanksgiving, while Karina Longworth was transfixed by Australia and Indecent Proposal over the holiday weekend. "So, I guess this is more of a list than review, but here goes: While "Australia" itself is not a bad movie (indeed, Baz Luhrmann has done much, much worse), it references a ton of movies that the casual viewer may not pick up on, but that hardcore fans of Australian cinema will notice, and movies that should not go unseen. So, here's a rundown of movies related to "Australia" and general Australian films that should be watched. I couldn't care less if you choose to see Baz Luhrmann's latest release, or skip it. But if you've got any interest in the land down under at all, do yourself a favor and check these movies out. "I might as well get this out of the way first: I loved Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia. I was on the fence about seeing this, especially once I heard about the 165 minute running time, but I gave in and boy was I glad. It’s a sprawling epic with nods to classic films of the 30s and 40s, and besides featuring the eye candy combo of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, it also introduces Brandon Walters, who is possibly the cutest child actor alive. If there was some sort of scientific cuteness scale, he’d break it. Despite the beautiful vistas and the sweeping storyline, not everyone is loving it. After the press screening I attended, a bunch of us gathered on the street outside the theater to debate reactions. It was oddly dividing: people either hated it or loathed it. I’d spent part of the week with a friend from Australia, and he’d denounced it as cheesy, because they have two Aussies in the lead roles: Jackman doing a faux “crikey!” Australian accent, while Kidman actually has a faux ... "Certainly the biggest news of the past 24 hours is the DGA’s three-year deal with the AMPTP, which could hopefully lead to a similar deal for the WGA, thereby ending the writer’s strike. It wasn’t that surprising, though, considering directors are used to walking in and not only finishing up but also taking the most credit for something begun by writers. I’m not actually sure if any of the DGA’s deal was based on outlines first made by the WGA, but a lot of times in Hollywood the writer’s original work is unrecognizable in the end product. Anne Thompson has the WGA’s statement regarding the DGA agreement here. Meanwhile the writer’s strike is affecting the UK. Look for the British to retaliate by ensuring Atonement wins every one of the BAFTA awards (including Best Animated Film). Imagine how hard-hit Hollywood will be without the ability to market their films with “BAFTA "
