Rapper and actor Ice Cube shows off his softer side in this family-friendly comedy. Nick Persons (Ice Cube) is a dealer in sports collectibles who has fallen for beautiful executive Suzanne Kingston (Nia Long). However, Nick discovers he has a bigger task than just winning her over -- Suzanne is a divorced mother with two children, Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden), and the kids don't believe any man besides their father is fit for their mother to date. Even though Nick doesn't care much for kids, he's eager to win Lindsey and Kevin over to score points with Suzanne, and so when business commitments threaten to strand Suzanne in Vancouver without her children for New Year's Eve, Nick volunteers to escort them. But when Nick is bumped from an airline flight due to a corkscrew in his pocket, he's forced to drive the kids to Canada, and Lindsey and Kevin see this as a golden opportunity to make life very difficult for Nick. Ice Cube served as both star and producer for this project. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Complaints about the Oscars include the following: the people who choose them are too old and out of touch; they don’t adequately honor comedy; they don’t give enough recognition to science fiction and fantasy movies; they fail to recognize that often the best animated film should also be nominated for best picture. Well, except for that last issue, the Kids Choice Awards, " [More]

"My kids liked RV and Are We There Yet a lot. This theme seems to be commonly used for comedies. (I know Road Trip is just too obvious for Mercurial to mention so I'll leave it out too.) The newest Wes Anderson, [More]

It's fascinating to see how far Ice Cube has come since his days as a foul-mouthed rapper in N.W.A, a parent's worst nightmare. Sure, the PG-rated Are We There Yet? is having fun with the idea that Cube is a bit rough to be chaperoning children, but in truth, he's been on this road toward becoming Uncle Ice Cube, the family-friendly icon, for some time now. It's important that Cube gives such a pleasing performance because the actors are the only things to recommend Are We There Yet? Fortunately, this includes the two darling child actors, Aleisha Allen and Philip Daniel Bolden, who seem to instinctively understand that they shouldn't be either too precious or too bratty. The middle ground makes them real siblings, bickering yet loving, and darn appealing. Without the winning rapport of these three, the audience would feel like an unwitting passenger on this journey -- whining the frustrated question from the title -- almost from the start. As movie road trips go, it's not very epic, covering only the 300 miles between Portland and Vancouver. The obligatory disastrous set pieces are written indifferently, almost tacked on and unimportant. The script's one clever idea is to have a bobblehead doll of Satchel Paige serving as the conscience of Cube's Nick Persons, a memorabilia shop owner, talking to him from the dashboard of his new Escalade. But Tracy Morgan's vocal schtick in this role grows tiresome as well. Since the performers generally distract from the production's many shortcomings, Are We There Yet? is a cute enough family movie. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
