""Ron Burgundy" (Will Ferrell) is the most popular news anchorman in 1970s San Diego, despite being an immature bafoon. His career is jeopardized when the station hires an attractive female reporter (Christina Applegate) who wants to be the first female anchorperson. This movie is not as funny as the TV promos lead you to believe. Although it does have some funny moments, but not enough to make it a good comedy. The comedy bits that do make you laugh will make you giggle, but nothing more. The cast itself is fair, but are one-dementional for the most part. The best defined are those played by Applegate and Ferrell. The performances, for the most part aren't that good as a whole -- with exception to Applegate, and Ferrell. In my opinion, Applegate was the best of the performers in this movie. The wardrobe was dead on. Even the hairstyles were perfect. You had a sense that you were in the seventies. Sadly, there was way too many problems with this film. There were a lot of problems in ... " [More]

"I haven't posted a review for a while, but this was so lame,it reminded me. What they give us here is,basically a half-arsed apocryphally accepted notion that everything and everyone was so sexist in the seventies, and that's about it. That idea is barely developed ,and it sounds like they made it up as the went along. Proof that Will Ferrell is only really as good as his material. Ditched it after twenty minutes and put some Seinfeld on to have a proper laugh. " [More]

"This has not been a good week to be at New Line Cinema. After getting enslaved by the Time-Warner media monolith last week, the company could not even trumpet its swansong. “Semi-Pro,” the Will Ferrell sports comedy, was the last film to be released while still remaining a “free agent,” tanked at the box office, squeezing out $3 million less than “Meet the Spartans” just a few weeks ago.Let that sink in.Will Ferrell, who has a string of successes and is a worldwide box office “star,” made less in a comedy than a film that’s biggest asset was a Britney Spears clone shaving her head and breakdancing gladiators.Prognosticators are scratching their heads as to how this could happen, offering theories of a tired formula (Will Ferrell + a sport + wacky non-sequiturs = funny), an unstable movie-going weekend (though “Ghost Rider” did better in its second week last year at the same time and “Madea’s Family Reunion ... "Hot off the success of Anchorman and Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro. This is a movie that tries to combine the retro 70s elements of Anchorman with the sporting action of Nights and yet ends up a poor cousin to both films. Its familiarity is a substantial part of why this movie fails to impress. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, owner, coach and player for The Tropics, a basketball team that is going nowhere. With the threat of the semi-professional leagues shutting down, Moon aims to score a top four finish for his team that will result in being moved to the prestigious NBA in a merger. Like Anchorman, Ferrell's character struggles with newfound competition, this time from Woody Harrelson as former NBA player Ed Monix. Like Anchorman there is a scene in which Ferrell fights a member of the bear family (though it is far less funny). Like Anchorman, Ferrell's character relaxes musically - this time by spinning lps rather than playing the flute. Sure, there's some fun mome ... " [More]

"I get the whole arrested development-style of comedy invading theaters of late. “Old School” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” really opened wide the door of such man-boy-based humor. So it was only logical that the star of the former and the director of the latter get together to produce yet another trip to Neverland, where modern-day Peter Pans can dance with their Lost Boy compadres. The result is “Step Brothers,” which teams Will Ferrell with John C. Reilly as two men in their 40s whose remora-like existence is severed when their single parents decide to marry. Where Judd Apatow's “Virgin's” lead was more of an introverted geek who otherwise led a normal, self-sufficient life by societal standards, Ferrell and Reilly play two infantile sluggards whose puerile, petulant behavior and refusal to let go of their parents' proverbial hands would cause Oedipus himself to proclaim, “Man, those guys are messed up!” &nbs " [More]

"Semi-Pro could have been an extremely funny movie. There are moments of absolute hilarity that had me rolling over in my seat, and several scenes during which I was shaking with uncontrollable mirth through several jokes. However, there were also times when I almost turned the movie off because it was so bad...that's something I've never done during a Will Ferrell movie. Will Ferrell tends to keep the jokes coming at an alarming rate, no matter how cheap or stupid the gags are. Even last year's Blades of Glory was funny throughout, and it was probably one of the shallowest comedies I'd ever seen. The thing with Semi-Pro is that it often shies away from things that could've been VERY funny, or just mentions them in passing and only allows for a few chuckles. Half the jokes even feel recycled from Anchorman, such as Jackie Moon's (thankfully underdeveloped) obsession with his hair. Also, the fact that Jackie hasn't even had sex with his smokin' hot wife while hundreds of other ... " [More]

"The best time for a Get Smart movie would have been the late ’60s, when the original television series was still on the air. In fact, there was a theatrical Get Smart film in the works during the run of the show, but it was canceled when the theatrical release of Munster, Go Home! bombed at the box office. Many years later, in 1980, a Get Smart feature titled The Nude Bomb was released to theaters, but it also performed poorly. Now we’re getting a remake version starring Steve Carell in the role that was so iconically defined by the late Don Adams. Will it do the show justice? Reportedly the budget was $80 million, a significant amount of which was probably put towards pointless effects. But the best thing Warner Bros. could have done with that money is to give a large amount to series creators Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, who probably even today could churn out a better script than Failure to Launch scribes Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember. Despite its lack of original Get Sm " [More]

"Will Ferrell is downright funny in almost anything. In this one he’s a full of himself newsman with a retro vibe. The jokes are silly and aren’t meant as any kind of sarcastic commentary on anything. They’re just plain juvenile and funny. I appreciate smartly written scripts, but occasionally mindless fun is needed. Pretty darn near the entire Frat Pack makes an appearance, and that’s a good thing. Special honorable mention goes to Paul Rudd who is fast becoming one of my favorite character actors. " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski “Afternoon Delight” is a pretty stupid song on its own, but in the hands of Will Ferrell, it’s even stupider. Though it’s certainly been used as an easy punch line elsewhere, the ditty about daytime lovin’ wasn’t just thrown on Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’s soundtrack: Ferrell and co-stars Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner perform it in fabulous four-part harmony complete with skyrockets-in-flight noises. Not just the chorus, not just the opening lines—the whole godawful thing. Accentuating an almost-mushy talk about what love it, it’s one of several brilliantly silly scenes in a movie that could have easily gone the way of a Saturday Night Live skit writ too large and too long. With bad hair and worse suits, Ron (Ferrell) is the curiously adored lead anchor at San Diego’s No. 1 TV station of the ’70s. He’s also, as the opening voice-over informs us, “the balls&rdq ...
