"Before I even saw Amen my review was mentally half-written. I was going to argue that it's ahistorical anti-Catholic propaganda from a ultra-radical director with an axe to grind. But while I disagree with the it's conclusion, this is not an unreasonable film. The film is based on the Rolf Hochhulth's super contraversial play The Deputy: A Christian Tragedity. Both Hochhulth and Costa-Gavras examine the same question (why were so many religious leaders silent during the Holocaust?) and give special attention to the role of Pope Pius XXII. A brief but neccessary historical sidenote: Pius, born Eugiono Pacelli, was Pope from 1939 until his death in 1958. His actions during the Second World War have been contraversial ever since the publication of Hochhuth's play in 1963 (before that, he had been widley popular, even with non Catholics and non Christians, and was considered to be one of the greatests Popes ever). Pius's detractors critized him for his "silence" during the Holoca ... "
