"Based on a 1946 novel by Robert Penn Warren, the story centers on "Willie Stark" (Sean Penn), a man whose strong ability to make speeches helps win him the Louisiana Governor's race. We see the story through the eyes of newspaper reporter "Jack Burden", who leaves his job to work for "Stark". Through him, we see the changes in "Stark", who lets power to get to his head. "Burden" in fact turns into a detective as he looks into the dealings of a judge. There are some strong performances in this film. Penn is really good, especially where he is delivering speeches. Not every performance is perfect however. There were times that I thought scenes lagged because of the performances. In fact, the movie frequently lags. I found myself paying more attention to message boards on the Internet more than watching the movie. I also had trouble listening to the thick Louisiana accents used nearly perfectly by the cast. Sometimes I would misunderstand a word or two and try to figure out what was b ... "

"There are occassions when you look at the cast list, look at the crew and look at the source material for a film and are forced to ponder how so many promising elements turn into a turkey. Based on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that was to Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long what Primary Colors was to Bill Clinton, the film tells the story of a fiery, populist politician (Sean Penn) who takes on the oil industry. We see the events from the perspective of Jack Burden (Jude Law), a newspaper writer who is drawn into Willie Stark's campaign for Governor and subsequently his administration. Stark, who was based upon Governor Long, is urged to run by a political schemer named Tiny Duffy who is trying to use Stark to get his own candidate elected Governor. When Burden reveals to Stark that Tiny is using him, the politician responds with a verbal tirade at his next stump stop against the fat cats - a theme that resonates with the crowd. Sean Penn's Stark is a curious beast ... "

"One question: why? Why remake a Best Picture Oscar winner? Why keep it on the shelf for a year? Why populate it with some of the best actors Hollywood has to offer with some of the worst accents and overacting we´re likely to see this year? And most importantly: why should anyone give a flying fig about "All the King´s Men"? The plot centers around Willie Stark (Sean Penn), a community treasurer whose mind is slowly filled with delusions of grandeur by powerful people who work behind the scenes. He eventually rises to the governorship of Louisiana, riding a wave of public support based on campaign promises there is no way he can fulfill. He takes out his opponents using a combination of blackmail and violence, one of whom happens to be a lifelong friend of Stark´s closest confidant, Jack Burden (Jude Law). Oscar Winner Sean Penn, Emmy Winner James Gandolfini, Oscar Winner Anthony Hopkins, Oscar Nominee Jude Law, Oscar Nominee Kate Winslet, Oscar Nominee Patricia ... "

"It seems that I'm always behind.Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg ("A History of Violence")'s latest reteaming with Viggo Mortensen ("Alatriste") is another glorious film. Though not as close to perfection as A History of Violence, the film is very interesting, suspenseful and thoughtful. Also, Mortensen has some really awesome tattoos. Naomi Watts ("The Painted Veil") stars as a nurse trying to find the family of a young pregnant girl who died in her hospital. This leads her to the Russian mob, for whom Viggo works. Because it's Cronenberg, there's some gore and it's not always easy to watch. But it's worth it.The Kite Runner gave me some trouble because I read the book first. And, of course, the film is not as good. The story focuses on Amir and his childhood friend, Hassan. Amir is taken out of Afghanistan by his father when he is young, but must return as an adult to help Hassan and his son. The story is touching and horrib ... "

"By Tricia Olszewski Does the world really need a new version of [blank]?” In this decade of relentless remakes and franchise-shaping before Installment No. 1 even hits the screens, the question is getting pretty tiring, and the ensuing debate is usually meaningless—nothing&rsqu o;s changing anytime soon. But All the King’s Men, whose release was delayed from last December, at least has a quasi-argument for its production. Democrat James Carville, the Louisiana political consultant with an outsize personality, spearheaded the project, stressing to producers the present relevance of Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer-winning novel. (Carville himself gets executive producer credit.) Warren’s book, its main character based on Louisiana governor Huey P. Long, was released in 1946 and turned into a film in 1949. Warren’s main message? It may shock you: Initially idealist politicians often turn corrupt, bringing others down with them. Maybe it was a surpr ... "

"Based on the 1946 Pulitzer Prize winning book written by Robert Penn Warren and a remake of the 1949 film of the same title, 'All the King's Men' tells the story of southern politician Willie Stark (Sean Penn). Jack Burden (Jude Law) is a newspaper columnist in New Orleans who after a deadly school tragedy convinces Stark to take his, at the time small following, and attempt to become governor. It's not long though until Stark realizes his running is but a ploy to "split the cracker" vote so the current governor can be re-elected. He then holds no punches as he takes his own path and wins over every person considered to be a hick. He accomplishes this by repeatedly enforcing the fact that he too is a hick and if elected will do his mightiest to serve them well. This in the end gets him his seat in the governor's mansion. As time passes though, Stark himself begins to travel down the road those he initially spoke against when he starts to take what are ... "
