"Both are broadly classifiable as science fiction, but Alien is basically a horror flick and Aliens has all the conventions of a war film. That’s a pretty slick transition from one type of movie to another, especially since the switch was so immediate within the series. Most movie franchises don’t play with genre in such a way until they’ve gone through a number of sequels, and even then the series usually just simply takes its characters into outer space, a la Moonraker, Jason X and Leprechaun 4. Genre jumping isn’t that easy, though, unless a franchise inhabits a whole universe in which to expand through. Like Star Wars, for example. Originally a film series, the Star Wars franchise spread out into novels, which has allowed "

"io9 has confirmed an earlier report that Ridley Scott will direct an adaptation of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley’s classic dystopian future novel. Scott says that Leonardo DiCaprio approached him about adapting the book, and it looks like he will star in the film as well. This is exciting news; not only does it herald the return to science fiction for the director of Blade Runner and Alien, it also means that Leo, who is working on a live action adaptation of Akira, has two dystopian future projects in progress. Brave New World is one of my favorite books, and Blade Runn "

One of my top five

"Without a doubt one of my top five horror films of all time! Yes, I know it takes place in space and some would say it's technically science fiction but let's face it...this is the old dark house in outer space. The distance the characters keep with each other (save for Parker and Brett), the worn out look of the Nostromo, the pitch perfect pace of the film not to mention the excellent score are all fantastic. But the real reason this is a true classic is that it changed the look of monsters forever. Try to think of a non-human monster after 1979 that didn't somehow resemble Giger's creation. Cheney doesn't count. Roberts out! "

"Star Wars may have the most famous opening title sequence in film history, but in terms of influence it’s got nothing on the work of Saul Bass. He’s the brilliant graphic designer who gave us the animated credits for Hitchcock’s Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho and Scorsese’s Casino, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence and Goodfellas and most of Otto Preminger’s work, including Exodus, Anatomy of a Murder and

"With masterful direction, Ridley Scott takes us into the discovery of the "perfect" organism, one that destroys with no remorse. Some memorable performances here, particularly by Sigourney Weaver and Ian Holm. The first visually captured birth of an alien is nestled permanently in my memory. A classic film amongst lesser gore-fests. "

Good day, 'Sunshine'

"I can't say that I'm particularly attracted to the work of Danny Boyle. I liked 'Trainspotting' and 'Shallow Grave' well enough, but I still haven't seen '28 Days Later' and 'Millions' is sitting in a pile of DVDs I got cheap at Hollywood Video. However, something seemed really appealing to me when I heard Boyle was doing a science fiction adventure-thriller (gotta love the vague IMDB plot categories).'Sunshine' is an intriguing tale of a team composed of varied personalities united by a mission to re-ignite the sun. Now, it's not that the sun has completely died, mind you, it's just lost some of its power, leaving the Earth in a state of perpetual winter. I was rather impressed with the subtle approach in this setup - it's not some overblown action version of impending disaster a la 'Armageddon.'The opening of this film takes some time to set a mood and introduce us to various members of the mission's crew ...
