"In July, 1988, the city of Tokyo, Japan, was destroyed by a nuclear explosion. The blast leads to World War III a few hours after. 31 years later, gangs are terrorizing Neo-Tokyo, a city on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay near the old city of Tokyo. Troubled youths are placed into a foster system where the adults in charge are a bit rough with them. One of these children, "Tetsuo" (voiced by Joshua Seth) is taken to a secret location where he is subject to experiments studying his awakening ESP powers. "Tetsuo's" powers grow as the movie progresses. He is slowly uncontrollable, and there may be only one thing that can stop him -- the one known as "Akira." Considered by many critics as one of the greatest animated movies of all time. It helped the sudden boom of popularity of Japanese Anime (aka Japanimation) the genre had in the Western hemisphere back in the 1990's. The animation is absolutely beautiful. The use of mostly darker colors sets a mood wonderfully. Like most Anime, t ... "

"io9 has confirmed an earlier report that Ridley Scott will direct an adaptation of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley’s classic dystopian future novel. Scott says that Leonardo DiCaprio approached him about adapting the book, and it looks like he will star in the film as well. This is exciting news; not only does it herald the return to science fiction for the director of Blade Runner and Alien, it also means that Leo, who is working on a live action adaptation of Akira, has two dystopian future projects in progress. Brave New World is one of my favorite books, and Blade Runn "

"I probably would of liked it more if i hadnt read the comic (manga) series first. Honestly, after blasting through the six or so 200+ page graphic novels i was completely excited to watch the film. But it wound up being a huge dissapointment and so much was left out. It's been atleast 5 years since i read or watched either, and i'm interested in reading + watching both again, to write a better revivew. But trust me, i do recall being very displeased and unsatisfied with it's comparison to the original medium. 1 of 5 stars. "

"This is one of my favorite anime films! Based loosely on his own massive manga masterpiece of the same name, Katsuhiro Otomo's anime classic absolutely embodies a dirty, troubled, apocalyptic world in every scene. Set in neo-Tokyo in 2019 after a mysterious cataclysm 31 years ago in 1988 (when this movie was released), the plot seems simple enough: after Kaneda's fellow motorcycle gang member friend Tetsuo is injured in an accident involving a strange kid, their worlds are turned topsy-turvy. Tetsuo, after developing telepathic powers, becomes a super powerful, homicidal maniac, with absolute chaos following him everywhere he goes. He obsessively searches for Akira, a mysterious telepath even more powerful than him, who may or may not be alive. Kaneda joins up with a girl named Kei and an anti-government terrorist group to find Tetsuo... and answers. Don't be fooled; this isn't your average action-packed apocalyptic flick. It's surprisingly deep and rich with de ... "

"not exactly the best movie in the world. although its definately an older anime film, I still couldn't exactly pin-point the plot of the movie. It was a very well executed animation, although the idea wasn't perfectly clear, it was still a somewhat entertaining movie. I enjoyed it for the most part. "
