Directed by Otto Preminger
The first of Allen Drury "all names changed to protect the guilty" political novels, Advise and Consent was brought to the screen by producer/director Otto Preminger. The film hinges upon the appointment of Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) to Secretary of State. Leffingwell has been hand-picked by the President (Franchot Tone), meaning that there'll be a battle on the Senate floor between adherents of and opponents to the current administration. Among the participants are veteran Dixiecrat Charles Laughton, freshman Senator Don Murray and powerseeker George Grizzard. Burgess Meredith also shows up as a man who is brought into the Senate to "prove" that Leffingwell is a communist. To neutralize Murray, Grizzard threatens to dredge up a homosexual incident in Murray's past, which results in the latter's suicide. Advise and Consent is a slow and old-fashioned film, coming to life only when Laughton and Grizzard are on screen--and in the climax, in which the fate of Leffingwell's appointment is left in the hands of acting President Lew Ayres. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"This is a great political thriller. It has everything, blackmail, secret plots against the government, sex and lies. I liked how you slowly discover that Henry Fonda is playing against type. First you see him as the upright citizen being unfairly persecuted for his beliefs and then gradually see that there might be something real in this witchhunt. Walter Pidgeon and Charles Laughton are each great in their roles as opposing senators. Add it to your Netflix queue. You won't re " [More]

Perhaps the most realistic portrayal of American political workings ever put on film, Otto Preminger's Advise and Consent may be a tad tedious for those uninterested in the capital's foibles. As with many of Preminger's films, however, there is no denying that the director skillfully captures a specific slice of American life. Unfortunately, the film was not a financial success; Preminger's hadn't had a box-office hit since Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Exodus (1960). In keeping with his string of interesting failures, Advise and Consent has many noteworthy elements. The cantankerous Preminger was famous for pushing the envelope of the Hollywood Production Code and American morality in general -- as he did with the graphic sexual content of Anatomy of a Murder and The Moon is Blue or drug addiction in The Man With the Golden Arm -- and the open homosexual element of Advise was understandably shocking for 1962. The brilliant British actor Charles Laughton made his final appearance in this film as South Carolina senator Seabright Cooley. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
