"I watched Adaptation several years ago but had almost no recollection of the movie until I was re-watching last week. Certain scenes would jump back to memory and I'd know what was coming, but only 10 seconds ahead. This should have been a strobing red light in my brain that I wasn't a huge fan. The premise is very creative -- like the story itself, there are a lot of cool and innovative ideas... I just think it came across boring on film. I found myself paying attention to Nic Cage acting as Charlie & Donnie Kaufman and Chris Cooper acting as the wild plant guy than necessarily caring about characters. " [More]

"This has been quite the week for me to wish Nicolas Cage still made good movies. Besides crying over the fact that his latest sci-fi action thriller involving disaster prophesy was #1 at the box office despite being panned by critics, some of my unrelated experiences over the past seven days have coincidentally included the following: watching Wild at Heart for the first time; learning from locals that Moonstruck was partly shot in my neighborhood; discussing, at a party, not only the merits of The Rock, but also its qualifications for inclusion in the Criterion catalog. I’m now thinking I should stay home tonight and watch a marathon of Raising Arizona, Face/Off and Adaptation.

"This is the part of my blog that I pick a director and take a few minutes to examine his career. This month I will take a look a one of Hollywood's coolest people, Spike Jonze. Why?? Because I said so. Spike started his career in the skateboarding industry shooting promotional skate vids. Later, he would co-found Girl Skateboard with Rick Howard. He went on to raise the artistic bar when it came to traditional skate videos with one he directed called Mouse. Here is an clip which features pro skater, Eric Koston as Charlie Chaplin in a moment of discovery. ______________________________ _____________________________ ______________________________ _____________________________ His most recent video for Lakai shoes was titled Fully Flared. Here is by far the coolest intro to a skate " [More]

"Simple in its premise but mind-bendingly complex in its execution, Adaptation is one of those films that only come along once in a while, and with Charlie Kaufman penning this and his other wildly imaginative narratives, those once in a whiles seem to be closing the gap in their regularity. Kaufman is the rare screenwriter whose name draws an audience (thanks to his oddly original "Being John Malkovich") and his work with both Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry is some of the most original and exciting in recent cinematic history, if not ever. This story melds your basic novel adaptation with the process of adapting a novel in a very autobiographical way, and Nicolas Cage gives a surprisingly good turn as the lead(s). Why he doesn't do more material like this is beyond me, because it seems he has the quirky idiosyncracies to pull off tons of this material. Well, in any case, I'm pleasantly surprised that all involved have assembled a fantastic film worth watching several times. " [More]

"Sometimes I really wish David Bordwell’s blog permitted comments. Mostly it’s better that it doesn’t, but the man’s last post has made me want to discuss the art of movie titles for a whole week now. And it didn’t help that coinciding in time with Bordwell’s post was another one of those sidebars in Entertainment Weekly pointing out some new movies with misleading titles. Yes, Lakeview Terrace does sound like a period romance, as do many other badly titled films (Elizabethtown and Wicker Park come to mind). This weekend also sees two new movies employing the method of borrowing song titles, which are typically not appropriate (Ghost Town seems more like a horror western hybrid, while My Best Friend’s Girl[More]

"Andrew Sarris may be one of the most influential American film critics, but here’s a claim, located within his recent review of In Search of a Midnight Kiss, that may not hold up to some of his better-remembered theories: “Even when we confront 40-year-old virgins of either gender, movies refuse to show them compensating for the lack of a sexual partner. There is lasting shame involved in this spectacle.” Not to ever, ever profess superiority over Sarris, but I’ve nonetheless compiled today’s list as a way of proving the man wrong. There are actually tons and tons of masturbation scenes found in non-porn movies, from the low brow to the high brow, from as indirect as the boy wizard playing with his wand under the covers in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to as direct as the non-simulated masturbation in Michael Winterbottom’s 9 Songs and John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus (which would probably feature my #1 pick, from the sound of it, if I ev " [More]

"If there’s one thing I relate to on the big screen, it’s the depiction of fraternal relationships. I’m the middle of three brothers (excluding the half-brother I only knew as a toddler and the former stepbrother I only knew briefly as an adult), and at different points in my life I’ve either hated them or considered them my best friends. So, yeah, I can’t wait to see Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as new siblings who go from being enemies to BFFs when forced to live together. Choosing a handful of favorite movies about brotherhood is really tough. After all, tales of brothers go all the way back to almost the beginning, with the story of Cain and Abel. And a number of favorites can’t exactly be discussed, because the revelation of brothers, especially twin brothers, is often the surprise twist in films. So, before you start naming a thousand other films about brothers that I’ve forgotten (such as The Brothers McMullen and Legends of the Fall), keep in mind ... " [More]

"NOTE: I am going to begin this review with a statement that does not really say what I mean to say about this movie. I urge you to read past it. It is important and is truer left in. Shall we begin. How far up your own ass can you go? "Adaptation" seeks to answer that question by being the most up its own ass movie there is. "Adaptation" is so up its own ass that is not funny. That being said I think that it was amazing. What we have here is a tour de force movie in every respect, every bit of it is excellent. Just to review its excellentness it has the following; amazing writing on Charlie Kaufman's part the story is brilliantly woven together in a way only he can really do (I guess), amazing performances Nicholas Cage does a great double person like nothing else, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper also great acting it won Cooper an Academy Award for a fine but not his best performance, and every bit of it radiates emotion from the screen. Not to mention it is bea ... " [More]

"Yesterday BoingBoing pointed to an article on The Psychologist Online by Huw Green that argues that David Lynch’s work, particularly Inland Empire, is an accurate depiction of what it’s like for someone with a psychotic illness to encounter reality. I immediately thought of last week’s episode of FilmCouch, in which I used Lynch, a new documentary about the filmmaker, as a point of entry to talk about his recent work. I compared Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire to recent films penned by Charlie Kaufman, namely Being John Malkovich, [More]

"After watching the movie Adaptation one normally is left bewildered as to what just happened and how much, if any, reality was written into this script. After I watched it a few times I decided to do some research, it was just too heady. I just came across this interview of Charlie Kaufman (Screenwriter) and Spike Jonze (Director) about the movie. It sheds some light on things in case you need some illumiation. Here is the interview via. About.com As always feedback is much appreciated. " [More]
