A forgotten one-night-stand from the 1980s sets the stage for romance fifteen years removed in director Craig Chester's urban romantic comedy starring Parker Posey, Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, and Chris Kattan. Despite the fact that neither Adam (Chester) nor Steve (Gets) recall the one-night-stand they shared fifteen years ago, the compatible pair form a fast bond when they meet again far removed from the intoxicating effects of the party scene. When the loving couple realize that their pasts have previously intersected, it's up to their best friends Rhonda (Parker) and Michael (Kattan) to help their pals accept their past and use the foundation of their current relationship to forge ahead into a fulfilling future of kindness and commitment. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

""Adam & Steve" is a rare gay-themed film in that none of the characters are dead, dying or stricken with any numbers of incurable diseases. That in and of itself is a welcome change of pace. But this movie does something else not regularly seen on the big screen: two gay characters who find companionship and love, riding off into the sunset together. The film starts off in 1980, with " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski For those who’ve never come to terms with the unlikely but all-pervasive genre of the gross-out romantic comedy, here’s a warning: The plot of Adam & Steve turns on the Hershey squirts. If you can get past the affliction’s first mention—and demonstration—however, this film by s " [More]

"Adam & Steve UICA June Pride Film Although they met in the 1980s after a monumentally disastrous one night stand, Adam (writer/director Craig Chester) and Steve (Malcolm Gets) don't recognize each other when they hook up again 15 years later. With the help of their best friends, formerly obese stand up comic Rhonda (Parker Posey) and straight guy ladies man Michael (Chris Kattan), the two men finally fall in love, only to realize—a year into their relationship—that they have met before and unw " [More]

"[quote user="mercurial"] Through out the years I have seen more and more movies embrace the culture and lifestyle and try to bring it's content more to the mainstream.. Would you consider films like PULP FICTION or even AMERICAN ME to be in that catagory since those movies did have acts of same sex featured in them? With all the brouhaha over that American Idol guy coming out and the onslaught of pride parades going on coast to coast this month, this week's the " [More]

"With all the brouhaha over that American Idol guy coming out and the onslaught of pride parades going on coast to coast this month, this week's theme is all about the gays. Mostly relinquished to flamboyant best friends and eccentric beauticians, the United States hasn't had a large influx of films that focus on LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgendered) characters like those that are more commonplace in European cinema. Aside from the media frenzy that surrounded [More]

"Hehe, awesome, I love debates!About Kissing Jessica Stein. As I've stated before in a post about coming out of the closet, I felt that Kissing Jessica Stein was a good movie. I know from the aspect of a queer audience viewing it the film does get reach that point of "oh gosh . . ." but I do have to say that it is what it is and it is a well made romantic comedy that showcases a queer subje " [More]

The long procession of mildly diverting gay relationship comedies continues with this sweet-and-sour date movie from indie mainstay Craig Chester. Adam & Steve doesn't purport to be anything but a trifle, no matter what its high-concept title might lead audiences to expect. Sure, the screenplay reaches for topicality with some vaguely political chatter about gay marriage. But the film's at its best when it bypasses such window-dressing to serve up comforting cliches with a modicum of panache. Although his approach as a writer/director can be fairly broad, Chester plays things pretty straight as one of the gay protagonists. Instead of camping it up, he lets his supporting cast do most of the comedic heavy lifting. Parker Posey, in full Party Girl mode, has a hoot enlivening fag-hag cliches. Chris Kattan does his best to match the indie queen beat for beat. Throw in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance by future Flight of the Conchords sidekick Kristen Schaal and you've got enough quiet chuckles to justify the film's existence. From its Wedding Singer-esque snapshots of '80s excess to its by-now-familiar West Village locale, Chester's film doesn't exactly break the mold. Still, despite the glut of similar movies that have crowded video-store shelves for a couple of decades, Adam & Steve more than manages to entertain. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
