Directed by Clive Donner
Charles Dickens' classic holiday tale of one man learning the true meaning of Christmas is brought to the screen once again in this made-for-TV movie. Ebenezer Scrooge (George C. Scott) is a cynical old man whose greatest concern is money, and who regards compassion as a luxury he can't afford. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay), his former business partner, who arranges for Scrooge to be visited by three spirits in an attempt to show him the error of his ways -- the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Angela Pleasence), Christmas Present (Edward Woodward), and Christmas Yet to Come (Michael Carter). The spirits force Scrooge to examine the failings of his own life, as well as the bravery and optimism of his loyal but ill-treated employee Bob Crachit (David Warner). A Christmas Carol also features Susannah York as Mrs. Crachit, Anthony Walters as Tiny Tim, and Joanne Whalley as Fan. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I had not seen this version before and I have to say that it is a good, kinda dark, kinda creepy rendition of the story. I enjoyed it. It's pretty traditional, put also has lovely 80's touches...like the Ghost of Christmas Past looks to have taken a bit of inspiration from David Bowie. Certainly entertaining. Worth a look if you like the tale of A Christmas Carole. Enjoy. " [More]

"In this version of the classic, I think George C. Scott plays a fantastic version of the classic Dickens character of Scrooge. Sure, it's still not as much of a staple of my childhood like the Mickey Mouse or Muppets versions were - but it's enjoyable on another level. Gotta love the nice 80's special effects of the ghosts too. I really enjoyed the dramatic camera angles, but there's certainly a good share of cheese in there. Oh, and the biggest (and most obviou " [More]

"I won't waste my time recapping such a well-known story. Surely most everyone has seen at least one or two other versions of this Christmas classic, which range from the nearly unwatchable, to the cheesey to the near genius. I hadn't seen this version untilr recently, but upon watching it I will take the risk and say it falls into the latter of the three categories. George C. Scott is brilliant as Scrooge, with an ominous and foreboding presence through out the movie " [More]

"This movie was OK. There were some non-intended creepy parts. The ghost of Christmas present was a total pimp. " [More]
