Directed by Nicolas Roeg.
A married couple is haunted by a series of mysterious occurrences after the death of their young daughter in this enigmatic chiller. Based on a story by Daphne du Maurier, whose works inspired Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca and The Birds, the film centers on Laura and John Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie), who have recently relocated to Venice so that John can oversee the architectural restoration of an old church. Both hope that the change of environment will allow them to forget the recent tragic demise of their child, but they instead find themselves surrounded by reminders of death, as the city attempts to deal with a series of unexplained murders. The eeriness intensifies when they encounter a blind psychic and her eccentric sister, who promise to contact her daughter's spirit. Laura embraces the idea, but John remains skeptical until he experiences his own visions: fleeting glimpses of someone in a red coat similar to one that belonged to his daughter. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

"Yes, I have to agree that there have been a few very excellent remakes. I really love the 70s Invasion of the Body Snatchers too. Donald Sutherland is just incredible and towards the end when he points and sreeches, I still can't get that image out of my head...shiver (has anyone seen him in the 70s movie, Don't Look Now - I love that little film too). But yes, every once in a while a remake comes along that just blows my socks off. Sometimes I forget that The Thing is a remake, the old movie is kind of cute actually, but the remake is pretty incredible (actually anything that Kurt Russell is in is pretty incredible). Hey I will even admit it, I loved the OLD Black Christmas movie, but I also enjoyed the remake of it. I did enjoy the remake of NOTLD in a way but I didn't like the woman that was the lead. There were even some parts of the remake of Halloween that I liked, but as a WHOLE movie, I didn't care for it at all and don't even compare it to the o ... " [More]

"Hmmm, that definately rules out I Spit on your Grave...lol. I was just looking over my Rental History and it looks like I'm a lot more disturbed than I thought I was - hee hee, I don't think I hardly have anything on there with minimal anything...sigh. Let's see...There was Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage, that was pretty fun and tame, the older movies from the 70s usually have a lot more suspense than gore, etc. Alice Sweet Alice was a good little spooky film but I wouldn't show it to children because it is about children and might be a little upsetting...Don't Look Now was very creepy but was pretty tame, some of the scary Japanese horror movies are just very suspenseful and hardly have ANY gore, The mainstream American versions of The Ring and The Grudge were scary but didn't have a lot of violence or cuss words. I'll have to think of some more. There is Eddie Murphy's The Haunted Mansion...or any other scary Disney Movie... " [More]

"I just watched Alice Sweet Alice late last night when I got home from jazz choir. I can't believe I never saw this movie. How did it slip by me? Anyway, I really enjoyed it (of course this morning when I went to work I was paying for it because I was up so late). Anyway, little Brooke Shields was just so adorable, she was such a good little actress when she was little. I enjoyed the ending too, because you KNOW what was going to happen for sweet little Alice in her Future. Anyway, it was definately worth watching. It reminded a lot of the movie Don't Look Now (I mean the kind of style and it was probably released about the same time). That was a nice little creepy movie. " [More]

"Has anyone ever seen Don't Look Now? It's the first one on the list. I just saw this about a year ago. It is such a creepy little movie. No gore at all, just a lot of chills and goosebumps. I really enjoyed it. There is another movie that is not on this list but I think it is in the top 100 movies, it is called the Changeling, has anyone seen that movie. It had George C. Scott in it. It is another one of those films that had no gore, just very spooky. I haven't seen Phantasm in a long time either. That is a really cool movie, if you haven't seen it, you ought to rent it just to see something different and very unforgettable. I've seen all the rest of these but I have not seen Tombs of the Blind Dead (which looks like it might be really good) and I don't think I've seen The Brood (I might have and just forgot) it sounds a little familiar - but I will have to put that on Netflix and see them. Sometimes I think I haven't seen a movie and th ... " [More]

Director Nicolas Roeg made several puzzling, complex films in his prime; Don't Look Now is one of his most enigmatic and certainly his spookiest. Roeg masterfully plays with psychological themes and Venice's labyrinthine settings, using images of a red-coated figure scurrying along the canals to create an almost unbearable emotional intensity. Based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, Don't Look Now succeeds far better than more complex horror stories in taunting the viewer's nerves. It is never grisly, but uses dense atmospherics and a dazzlingly firm directorial hand to create a fascinating exploration of the supernatural. It is a far better film than many more popular films of the genre that feature children and psychic or supernatural links. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide
