Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar
Grogan (Kevin Heffernan) and Matt (Paul Soter) get caught red-handed stealing food from the college cafeteria, but Felix (Steve Lemme) calmly climbs out a back window and gets away. Later, at a party with his friend, Zach (Jay Chandrasekar), Felix catches sight of Suzanne (Kayren Butler) and is immediately smitten. But not only does Suzanne have Traci (Jamison Selby), her jock boyfriend from home, hanging around, it also turns out that she's defending Felix's moronic friends in the school's case against them. As if this wasn't enough trouble, she's also trying to get them to turn in their unknown accomplice. Zach has his own romantic problems. He's gotten the phone number of a beautiful woman, but she's left out one of the digits, and he's too shy to approach her again, necessitating several hours of dialing wrong numbers. Meanwhile, Suzanne's friend, Emily (Alison Clapp), is being pursued by the kooky campus mailroom worker, Freaky Reaky (Erik Stolhanske). Puddle Cruiser was the first feature from the Colgate University-spawned comedy troupe, Broken Lizard, who produced the film independently. The film was well received at several festivals, including the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, but failed to find a distributor. The troupe took the film on an innovative national college tour, selling tickets and building word-of-mouth. Broken Lizard's follow-up feature, Super Troopers, received a wide theatrical release in 2001. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

"I rented this movie the other day because it was made by the guys in super troopers. It was pretty boring overall, but there are some funny parts here and there. Farva is the funniest I think because of his awkwardly intense nature. I liked the guys in the dukes of hazzard better... " [More]

Puddle Cruiser is an amiable, but aimless college comedy which served as the film debut of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, who would go on to make Super Troopers. Both films were directed by troupe member Jay Chandrasekar. Puddle Cruiser is a little less polished than Super Troopers, but it has some of the same loose-limbed, laid-back charm. The film is at its best in scenes where the entire group is together. They seem to genuinely enjoy each other, and their efforts to amuse one another give the film a mild bonhomie. They're also intimately familiar with their eastern liberal arts school milieu, leading to more than a few moments of chuckle-inducing verisimilitude. The comedic highlight of the film is a sequence in which Emily (Alison Clapp) has a nightmare about seeing the class stoner, Freaky Reaky (Erik Stolhanske), everywhere. The romantic comedy story line is less successful, particularly as it pointlessly devolves into a sloppy, cliché-ridden sports comedy, focused on a rugby match, on which nothing is really at stake. Steve Lemme is adequate in the lead, but the troupe was wise to devote more screen time to other troupe members (Chandrasekar, Kevin Heffernan, and Paul Soter), and less time to the routine plot machinations in their follow-up. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
