Directed by John Payson.
This film is based on an innovative short film made for MTV about a guy living in a horrible downtown apartment filled with scores of mischievous, smart-alecky roaches. The story chronicles the adventures of Joe (Jerry O'Connell), a hapless rube from the rural Midwest who journeys to the wilds of New York City. Mugged repeatedly on his arrival, his luck seems to turn when he finds an affordable apartment in a very dubious neighborhood. Unfortunately, his landlord (Don Ho) is more interested in evicting or, if need be, murdering his tenants, so that the building can be turned into a (highly profitable) penitentiary. Joe finds the allies he needs in his apartment's cockroaches, who sing and dance their way into his heart. This film should be of interest for fans of 1930s musicals; it makes reference to Busby Berkeley's elaborate dance phantasmagorias and the odd water ballets of Esther Williams. Many of the scenes utilized real roaches who were "choreographed" via tiny filament harnesses and other devices. Animal rights activists will be pleased to note that no roaches were intentionally harmed during filming. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

"Wow, it was hard to pick a winner, but it’s frozenhamster for his 4/20 post-- “Ghostbusters: London Calling. An Edgar Wright Film …England is about to get slimed! When ghosts get a passport to Europe they take London by storm and it's up to a special team of British parapsychologists to save the city. Killing ghosts and making jokes, all before tea time.” Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) as Peter Venkman, Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) as Ray, Martin Freeman (Tim on the British Office) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Winston. Besides being a really fun idea, I like it because it’s its own thing and doesn’t try to “replace” anyone, especially the inimitable Bill Murray. Second prize: minerwerks – your post is a tour de force of film history, and thank you for directing our thoughts to the demented world of David Heavener (Kill Crazy). I'd also like to mention lazyalchemist's post. I especially liked imagining Rainn Wilson (The Office&rsq ... " [More]

"This film is a wonder for SFX junkies - the attention to detail on the roaches is amazing. Also, I found many of the scenes to be successfully humorous - me and my roommate at the time (I originally saw this at home in 1997) could NOT stop laughing at the scene when Joe steps off the bus for the first time and gets mugged...several times in a row. This being an MTV production, the chosen popular music is, of course, very catchy and the showtune-like songs the roaches sing are composed by the always on-target Carter Burwell. I think if you go into this film knowing you're about to see some VERY good FX on some VERY disgusting creatures, and you know it's a silly, gaudy COMEDIC film with some off-kilter song-and-dance numbers, you may actually enjoy this film. I did. " [More]
