Directed by Danny Boyle.
Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton's two best friends are also junkies: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman's debauched cousin. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="FroggyBaBe15876"] When I was in Latin class, our teacher told us that the worst possible ghost was a baby ghost, since they were all pissed that their lives just started and then ended so quickly. But what about baby ZOMBIES? Gage in Pet Semetary was pretty scary. And those weird little baby zombies in Silent Hill were creepy as hell. There's also the one in the Dawn of the Dead remake...that was just wrong, though. Ew. Anyway, what other movies have had baby (or little kid) zombies? I can't think of any...oh! Dead Alive, duh. Yeah. Gotta love the baby zombie in that one. [/quote] Aside from the ones named, the only other one that sticks out in my mind is the dead baby walking across the ceiling in Trainspotting. I know it's imagined by a character coming off heroin, but damn if that freaky little zombie baby wasn't the creepiest thing I'd ever seen. " [More]

"From the Entertainment and Culture blog over at New York Magazine comes a list of THE TEN MOST ANTI-CHRISTIAN MOVIES OF ALL TIME. What a title, eh? 10. Carrie (1976) After the titular protagonist gets her first period at school, her crazy, devoutly Christian mother locks her in a closet and tells her to pray, explaining that only sinners menstruate (Wikipedia says this is false). Luckily, Carrie has telekinetic powers, which she uses to toss her mom across a room, electrocute her principal, and burn down her high school's gymnasium, killing hundreds of students. Parents, take note.Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =yJe0iVo8y3A 9. "SUNSHINE is one of those films that had me hooked for most of its length, but then during the last act almost completely lost me; although not entirely in this case, thankfully. I was slightly disappointed that Danny Boyle, the director the film (also TRAINSPOTTING and 28 DAYS LATER), went for the conventional mainstream plot devices that he threw into the last act of film. I won’t say what they were… you’ll just have to see the film, and we can talk about it afterwards if anyone wants to… but anyway… I really liked the film overall – it’s one of those apocalyptic, end of the world scenarios that we’re presented with: in a nutshell, the sun is dying, and world governments assemble a team of scientists and astronauts to go on what is essentially on a suicide mission, into space, in a ship armed with a nuclear weapon meant to be launched into the sun’s core, where it will explode and reignite the sun… a scenario which we ... "This was my first drug movie that I'd ever seen. Needless to say it left quite an impression. This was also my first time encountering the acting skills of Ewan McGregor which will forever be admired. I love Spud and the character development that actually never really develops into anything different. Old habits die hard. Does this movie glorify drugs? That's a big question people ask. I'd say no. Because despite the amazing scene of him coming out of the toilet...I wouldn't ever want to be in a place where the toilet looked like that or have hallucinations of babies falling from the ceiling while I detox. Nah. I think I'll stick to candy as my number one addiction, thanks. " [More]

"Oh, yeah. For the record books:The Coen Brothers: Fargo was great, but it's a flavor-of-the-week film. I'm going with The Man Who Wasn't There. I'm such a sucker for Scarlett Johansen.Sofia Coppola: Lost in Translation. Hands down. If she ever tops this, I'd be surprised.Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing. I'm an unnatural fan of Summer of Sam, but it doesn't come close to the poignancy of Do the Right Thing.Quentin Tarantino: Pulp Fiction, but he's got the potential to do better. He keeps getting stuck in these genre films and he's losing his credibility as as "original" director.Alfred Hitchcock: Rear Window. Suspenseful, inspired a recent remake (or "modernization").Michel Gondry: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A beautiful film that realizes the beauty of tragic love and also the beauty of raw, un-CGI'd cinema.Stanley Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange. Actually, call it a toss-up between that and Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned ... " [More]

"I am a big Danny Boyle fan. Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Millions are among my favorite movies so it was with great anticipation that I went to see Sunshine. I hadn't read any reviews (purposely) so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. The trailer makes it seem as if it is a sci-fi horror/thriller type of thing but the first half of the movie is a much more sedate 2001 experience. It is beautifully shot and set up and there is a slow tension that builds as the crew of the ship heads toward its destination. There is a shift in tone though and the movie becomes much more conventional (in story) and far more active (in direction). There are many similarities to Event Horizon in the final act but they are done to better effect in that movie. I enjoyed it despite its flaws. the acting is good and in some parts great. Cillian Murphy, as always, shines and Chris Evans, Michele Yeoh and Rose Byrne are solid. I am ever impressed with directors who can cross genres convincingly ... " [More]

"I can't say that I'm particularly attracted to the work of Danny Boyle. I liked 'Trainspotting' and 'Shallow Grave' well enough, but I still haven't seen '28 Days Later' and 'Millions' is sitting in a pile of DVDs I got cheap at Hollywood Video. However, something seemed really appealing to me when I heard Boyle was doing a science fiction adventure-thriller (gotta love the vague IMDB plot categories).'Sunshine' is an intriguing tale of a team composed of varied personalities united by a mission to re-ignite the sun. Now, it's not that the sun has completely died, mind you, it's just lost some of its power, leaving the Earth in a state of perpetual winter. I was rather impressed with the subtle approach in this setup - it's not some overblown action version of impending disaster a la 'Armageddon.'The opening of this film takes some time to set a mood and introduce us to various members of the mission's crew ... A film that shows what makes heroin addictive without glorifying it, Trainspotting was one of the most popular and controversial British films of the 1990s. Exploding with morbid wit, kinetic energy, and fatalistic insight, it jolted critics and audiences regardless of whether or not they actually liked it. A twisting, riff-filled, almost plot-free story, Irvine Welsh's novel was almost unfilmable in its original form. The screen adaptation successfully streamlined Welsh's ungainly material into a slick social commentary that smoothed the book's rough edges without losing its vitriol and insight. Trainspotting is not merely about drug addiction, but about the relationship between wasted youth and the spiritually bankrupt society that has alienated them. Another of the film's great strengths was its ensemble casting of Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewen Bremner. McGregor and Carlyle, in particular, turned in star-making performances as Renton, the film's affable narrator, and Begbie, its resident psychotic drunk. Their work, and that of their co-stars, makes for such compulsively enjoyable viewing that, fittingly enough, you'll have a hard time coming down afterwards. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide
