Directed by Joel Coen.
Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their rural Minnesota roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"I've been hearing people say good things about "The Lookout," and I'm not really sure why. When I went to see it, I was pretty disappointed. I'm trying to remember what it was about the movie I didn't like. I seem to remember the plot moving too slowly for me. Maybe I'm just impatient, and there was something going on that I just didn't get. I dunno. My top Coen Bros. scenes:-The ferret in the bathtub scene from "The Big Lebowski"-The "summer rain" scene from "O Brother"-The first scene with the apocalyptic bounty hunter in "Raising Arizona"-The wood chipper scene in "Fargo" (for some reason I just can't get over the image of Steve Buschemi's foot sticking out of that thing. It gave me awesome shivers.)-The bowling dream sequence from "Lebowski." [/quote] Great list, I also must add a few-The "look into your heart scene" in Millers Crossing. Completely unforgettable.-The car accident in The Man Who Wasn't There.-The John Goodman transformation at ... " [More]

"My list, in continuation… 6. Fargo See my blog entry on it…it’s a while back, but I feel it’s pretty comprehensive as to how fricken incredible this movie is. 7. Chinatown An absolute classic. Jack Nicholson’s greatest role, and an amazing turn by Faye Dunaway. See my review of it…it’s a little while back as well. 8. Mulholland Drive This David Lynch masterpiece of the absurd is just plain awesome. Everything in his power is brought full-on into creating one of the most hypnotizingly gorgeous films ever put onto the screen. The bizarre plot twists and overall nuance of the movie make it a gripping experience, alternately terrifying and depressing and funny. There is not enough to be said about this movie…a truly mind-blowing spectacle of a film. On the topic of David Lynch, I would also like to mention how good Inland Empire was…but I could only include so many on this list. 9. Pulp Fiction One of the coolest ... " [More]

"1. Forrest Gump The last scene where he's talking at Jenny's grave always gets me...especially once he puts his kid on the bus. One of the only scenes I've ever actually flat out cried to.2. The Fisher King When Robin Williams finally comes face-to-face with the knight and has to face his past. It's really difficult for me to even watch this scene...it's amazing.3. No Country for Old Men Not really a tear-jerker, but Ed Tom Bell's final meditation on his dreams is amazing. His delivery is so quietly emotional...and I cried from the awesomeness of it.4. Saving Private Ryan A couple scenes to mention: the one where Vin Diesel is shot and just wants someone to deliver his letter to his father, and the final scene. Tom Hanks, you get me every time...5. Children of Men There are so many emotional scenes in this movie...I guess I'll just include all of them. Amazing movie.I heartily agree with the last scene of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, ... " [More]

"It took an ice storm for me to realize how much I really wanted to watch this movie. I left my copy of it over at my girlfriends (ex now) house about a year ago, and I haven't missed it very much until right about now. So I figured I would write about it. Before the Coens released No Country for Old Men (which I'm planning on seeing this weekend for a third time, and have already pre-ordered the DVD), Fargo was by far my favorite Coen Bros film. I first saw it when I was 13, and I was astounded by the cinematography and the hauntingly minimalist view of small-town crime that it presented. Frances McDormand is still my favorite pregnant woman ever on screen (about 900 times better than Ellen Page and Katharine Heigl put together). Her portrayal of the cop at the center of the horrific events is one of the greatest I've ever seen, but I'll get to that later. The film begins with what I think is one of the most brilliant and ironic things I've ever seen; the Co ... "Fargo is a perfect movie. Every scene, no, every line in this film moves the story forward. The casting is perferct but the real star here is the Coens brilliant screenplay. I'm told that there was little to no improvising on this film. I am also told that the script was so damn good, there was no desire to improvies on the part of the actors. Besides all this, I just want to call attention to Steve Buscemi. How great is he. He is funny, menicing, weird, and fits in so well with the Coens scripts. I just think he is one of the most underated actor of all time. " [More]

"Thanks for the opinions Ryan! What does flavor-of-the-week mean to you exactly? What flavor is Fargo? You get that flavor weekly? If you mean it's just a genre piece, well that's pretty much all of the Coens work. All of their movies are different genres. ESPECIALLY The Man Who Wasn't There.I think she just might be able to. If she did think how awesome that would be!You didn't include Hard Eight in your links. Have you seen it? It's the only PT Anderson feature I haven't seen yet. Is it as good as the rest? " [More]

"Oh, yeah. For the record books:The Coen Brothers: Fargo was great, but it's a flavor-of-the-week film. I'm going with The Man Who Wasn't There. I'm such a sucker for Scarlett Johansen.Sofia Coppola: Lost in Translation. Hands down. If she ever tops this, I'd be surprised.Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing. I'm an unnatural fan of Summer of Sam, but it doesn't come close to the poignancy of Do the Right Thing.Quentin Tarantino: Pulp Fiction, but he's got the potential to do better. He keeps getting stuck in these genre films and he's losing his credibility as as "original" director.Alfred Hitchcock: Rear Window. Suspenseful, inspired a recent remake (or "modernization").Michel Gondry: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A beautiful film that realizes the beauty of tragic love and also the beauty of raw, un-CGI'd cinema.Stanley Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange. Actually, call it a toss-up between that and Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned ... " [More]

"The power of film. You recognize it when you see it. Or feel it. Quotes that stick with you, or a glistening tear rolling down a beautiful cheek. A soaring score that tugs at your heart strings, or a heroic death, a sacrifice that was made for the good of all humankind. Eh. What of the overlooked? The filler parts of the film, meant to amuse, move the story’s plot or suspense along, or to act as comic relief? For every poignant film death forever memorialized on the big screen, an extra, a bad guy or some other lesser character has to take one for the team. The yang to the hero’s yin. The black to the white of your starlet’s blank, emotionless eye. Let us look at some of the unfortunate sacrifices that have been made for the good of the plot, and share a moment of silence for these unfortunates. Raiders of the Lost Ark - The Egyptian guy with the sword. He comes out swinging with the biggest, shiniest, sharpest sword any of you fools have ever seen. Poor guy. For all ... " [More]

Fargo never seems to make up its mind if it wants to be an absurdist comedy or a stylized crime drama, and that's a big part of its charm: somehow it manages to be both at the same time. While the movie never shies away from the grim facts or consequences of the kidnapping and multiple murders at the core of the narrative, Fargo does manage to skate playfully into a dryly comic look at life in the frozen wastes of Minnesota, where cuisine is ruled by the buffet and folks really say "You betcha!" Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, former Minnesotans themselves, understand the physical and emotional landscape of the little town of Brainerd, and they seem to laugh both with it and at it; while they can't help but find humor in the nasal, Nordic drawl and implacably low-key nature of these people, Joel and Ethan seem genuinely to like them -- especially Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand, in a deservedly Oscar-winning performance), whose perversely sunny disposition only partially obscures the fact that she's a clever, observant, and very effective cop. The Coens have even more fun (though of an edgier variety) with Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi, who steals every scene he's in), a weasely crook whose every word and gesture screams, "I'm Not From Around Here." Despite the film's assured comic sensibility, the Coens bring a nail-biting tension to the murder scenes, and William H. Macy's Jerry Lundergaard is a pathetically compelling mass of misguided motivation and bad choices. While most of their films are remarkable for a gymnastic visual style, the Coen brothers give Fargo a stark, clean look that's the perfect match for the chilly near-monochrome of the snowy Midwestern landscape; Fargo looks less like a Coen brothers film than anything else they've done, while defining their signature themes as clearly as anything else they've done. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
