Jane Austen might never have imagined that her 1816 novel Emma could be turned into a fresh and satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in a Beverly Hills high school. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne (Stacey Dash), both named after "great singers of the past that now do infomercials," are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible. But Cher, who lives with her tough yet warm-hearted lawyer dad (Dan Hedaya) and hunky, sensitive stepbrother (Paul Rudd), also has an innate urge to help those less fortunate -- like the two introverted teachers she brings together ("negotiating" herself improved grades in the process) and new friend Tai (Brittany Murphy), who starts out a geek and ends up a Cher prodigy. Cher also possesses her own sensitive side, and she is looking for the perfect boyfriend, whom she ends up finding where she least expected. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

"I still don’t get the deal with these “virtual worlds” the kids are all into today, but apparently someone at Paramount Pictures is hip enough to exploit get involved. The studio is opening its film vault and supplying both There.com and vMTV (which like Paramount is owned by Viacom) with thousands of very short “PG-13-or-tamer” video clips of parts of its movies (examples given are Footloose and Clueless). Unlike the full-length versions of The Matrix and Gattaca that are available in the “world” of Gaia Online, these clips are not as much for entertainment purposes as they are a sort of virtual way to “speak” in movie quotes. There.com and vMTV members will be able to express themselves with seconds-long video clips of movie one liners — say, Danny Zucko’s “Be cool, huh?” from “Grease” — with the service called VooZoo. The application from Los Angeles-based developer FanRocket was introduced on social-networking site Facebook last month and on mobile devices Tuesday. (more…) Or ... " [More]

"Hi!I am Elli. New in Spout. I found Spout watching the Four Eye Monster -movie in Youtube. This is a place for me. Movie fanatic like the rest.Genres are great. I guess I mostly enjoy good comedies with a sparkle of darkness/drama. Like Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State or Lost in Translation. But I get trully excited with good action scifi stuff like the marvelous Sunshine or the first The Matrix. I love to spend time with good animation like the old Disneys The Little Mermaid or The Lion King or Japanese creations like Miyazaki`s Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi. When I want something really romantic I watch Before Sunset. I regard Clueless as a classic. Fabuleux destin dÁmelie Poulain makes me smile, some Bollywood movies and Moulin Rouge (in the end) makes me cry and Quentin´s Kill Bills makes me want to go jogging. Horror I cannot watch because with my over active imagination I get nightmares. Usually I prefer to see a movie I haven´t yet seen over a good mov ... " [More]

"I had to think hard about this because I couldn't figure out why it was so hard for me to answer about female directors. I was hoping it wasn't some unconscious chauvinistic tedencies on my part causing me to devalue movies directed by females. I actually think that many of the female directed movies of the last decade or so tend to be "woman's pictures" that hold little interest for me in terms of style or story. That being said, there are some movies directed by women that I would rate highly regardless of who helms it. Ida Lupino was a real pioneer in female directing (not the first but the best known early director) and she directed a really nifty film noir - 1) The Hitch-hikerThe '80s are generally mocked as a shallow time in film, but at least women were given a chance to direct mainstream films and a few of the movies are among my favorite 80's and early 90's films:Amy Heckerling - (4 tie) Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who's Talking, and Clue ... A modern teen update of the classic Jane Austen novel Emma, Clueless puts a novel spin on the time-honored "it's what's inside that counts" tale. Unlike most high-school fare, the film rarely relies on mean-spiritedness for its humor and never resorts to conventional sex-and-beer hijinks. The laughs are spot-on, punctuated by the script's outrageous glossary of teen lingo and its appropriately over-the-top depiction of high-school stereotypes. In a star-making role, Alicia Silverstone is perfect as the spoiled, nakedly manipulative Cher, an L.A. rich kid who finds her soul. As written and directed by Amy Heckerling -- who helmed the similarly bright Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) -- Clueless is less concerned with plot than with savvy one-liners and telling observations on Cher's bizarre world of teen materialism. The film also deserves credit for being one of the first of a spate of candy-colored, teen-oriented retellings of classic stories, including William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1996) and Cruel Intentions (1999). ~ Matthew Doberman, All Movie Guide
