Directed by Mel Gibson.
Mel Gibson, long-time heartthrob of the silver screen, came into his own as a director with Braveheart, an account of the life and times of medieval Scottish patriot William Wallace and, to a lesser degree, Robert the Bruce's struggle to unify his nation against its English oppressors. The story begins with young Wallace, whose father and brother have been killed fighting the English, being taken into the custody of his uncle, a nationalist and pre-Renaissance renaissance man. He returns twenty years later, a man educated both in the classics and in the art of war. There he finds his childhood sweetheart Murron (Catherine McCormack), and the two quickly fall in love. There are murmurs of revolt against the English throughout the village, but Wallace remains aloof, wishing simply to tend to his crops and live in peace. However, when his love is killed by English soldiers the day after their secret marriage (held secretly so as to prevent the local English lord from exercising the repulsive right of prima noctae, the privilege of sleeping with the bride on the first night of the marriage), he springs into action and single-handedly slays an entire platoon of foot soldiers. The other villagers join him in destroying the English garrison, and thus begins the revolt against the English in what will eventually become full-fledged war. Wallace eventually leads his fellow Scots in a series of bloody battles that prove a serious threat to English domination and, along the way, has a hushed affair with the Princess of Wales (the breathtaking Sophie Marceau) before his imminent demise. For his efforts, Gibson won the honor of Best Director from the Academy; the movie also took home statuettes for Best Picture, Cinematography, Makeup, and Sound Effects. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

"Well if the subject does not say it all, allow me to emphasy. This movie is not about Gore, or Action, don’t get me wrong it has plenty of it. However this film plot is amazing, I have never seen a movie were action and drama has been so well intertwined. Like most stereotypical men I do not cry in movies, but this film was a tear jerker at points, as well unbelievable gore scenes in the battle field. Neat less to say I ask of you that have not seen this movie to please watch it, is a rollercoaster of emotions, you will not be disappointed " [More]

"Person: Mel Gibson, Greatest Work: The Patriot, Braveheart, What Women Want, Lethal Weapon Quads, Conspiracy Theory, Apocolypto, The Passion of Christ, Ransom just to name a few, Gossip: Just wondering, for all you Mel Gibson fans out there what do you propose is going through his mind these days. While I will deliberately not comment on allegations that deal with religion and race, he certainly appears worn and dethroned in recents years. He has experienced such success both in front of and behind the camera, yet he is photographed in filthy foreign dives, obviously of various levels of intoxication but he has let his appearance even in rare respectable sitings go to the point of barely recognizable. I do not attempt to understand how or if people hit early, mid or late life crises, but shouldn't he be scuttling along to vacations spots on private jets, with his large family or even a gorgeous girlfriend (if so he choses) instead of sporatically popping up at establishme ... "Great topic!!! I'll play.tmoney - my #1 is your #51.) Anchorman - Don't get me wrong. I actually like Will Ferrell. But not in this stupid movie. He made me want to hit him. Seriously.2.) Wedding Crashers - Please tell me why this movie is supposed to be funny. I'm asking. Oh, and Will Ferrell appeared in this one too. Hey, I thought he was hilarious as Ricky Bobby. I always say it's a crapshoot with him.3.) Citizen Kane - Ok, before you start hurling tomatoes, hear me out. Yes, it was a breakthrough. Yes, it was ahead of its time. Is it the greatest movie of all time????? Why? The movie is sooooooo boring! I like cerebral films, I do. I like those kinds of quasi-biographical quasi-allegorical type films. I don't hate it completely, but I'm tired of everyone telling me it's the best there is. I still think Casablanca and The Godfather are both far better movies, and they're entertaining too. Those movies have it all! Sorry, Orson. ... " [More]

"This has to be one of my favorite movies. It has everything - suspense, great fight scenes (very realistic), a tragic love story, a great ending (even though it's sad) but the whole movie is wonderful. This is one of those movies that is fun to curl up and watch on a rainy afternoon with a little haggis...well, maybe not haggis but it is worth watching!! " [More]

"brooke shields,i believe she does mostly tv shows and guest tv appearances lately;and a few indie movies in the late 90s;I liked her in suddenly susan (sitcom), freeway, and black and white; She's played varied indie role that show her different acting ability and those are some good choices;Unlike melissa gilbert which i discussed in the other 80s discussion..mel gibson, also a great director and producer(braveheart, apocalypto ),and a writer too of apocalypto;i just rented apocalypto,i have yet to see it ; and see for myself ,if i like it.tom cruise, never realized endless love for his first movie,he played billy, did he play a big role or a small part;probably have to watch the movie again since it was so long ago;i remember him in the movie that made him more well known risky business ;also taps (1981),that was a pretty good movie that also starred a fave actor of mine back then, timothy hutton(ordinary people, the falcon and the snowman,turk182 was some of my faves back then)I b ... Thoroughly ahistorical, Braveheart is nonetheless a rousing tale of heroism and honor, full of passion and wit and courage enough to inspire an army to victory. In fact, it very nearly did just that, becoming a focal point within the U.S. military for discussions of the societal obligations of the modern citizen-soldier. Filmed almost entirely in Ireland, Braveheart convincingly re-creates its version of Scotland circa 1300. A major strength is the marvelously designed battle sequences, the work of actor/director Mel Gibson and cinematographer John Toll. While only a modest success at the box-office, Braveheart was a substantial hit in video, and is remembered as the R-rated film that parents most often brought home to share with their children. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide
