Directed by Kevin Smith.
When Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) is reluctantly put in charge of the Quick Stop market on his day off, he tries, though half-heartedly, to perform his minimum-wage duties as efficiently as possible. This gets tough amidst the on-going fight with his girlfriend, Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti), and his attempt to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlyn Bree (Lisa Spoonhauer). Meanwhile, his friend and alter ego Randall (Jeff Anderson) is working behind the counter of the adjacent video store -- at least when he feels like it. Randall's unabashed disdain of his place of employment, a long with his self-admitted hatred towards its customers is a sharp contrast to Dante's feeble attempts at the niceties of customer service. Much of the film consists of Randall and Dante's criticism of their customers, their lives, and the world in general. Clerks, filmed in black-and-white on a budget of only $27,000, began the career of writer director Kevin Smith, who would go on to make Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Well now that it's over, I guess I'll chime in. My idea is to recast this film with characters from other movies. Meaning, new actors, playing the Princess Bride character as a character they have allready played in another movie. This would probably be the worst movie ever so.............. here it goesWestley ..... Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman as the retarded football player in the made for TV movie referenced in Garden StateButtercup / The Princess Bride ..... Christina Ricci as Rae from Black Snake Moan - this will probably change the rating a bit.Inigo Montoya ..... John Turturro as Jesus The Bowler in The Big LebowskiPrince Humperdinck ..... "In late 2005, my friend Tony and I had finished post-production on an extremely low budget movie and Tony set about figuring if there was any market for it. This brought the world of film festivals to our attention.I had previously had a bit of experience with a festival, working one year with the Florida Film Festival, hosted at the beautiful Enzian Theater in the Orlando area. That, plus a return for several screenings in the following years, formed a lot of my ideas about what a film festival should be.The year I worked, I got to meet John Pierson, noted producer's rep and author of the indie film chronicle, 'Spike, Mike, Slackers & Dykes.' At the time, I was just impressed he helped sell 'Clerks' to Miramax. Interestingly enough, one of the judges that year was Robert Hawk, who was the original champion of 'Clerks,' even before Pierson came aboard, but I was unaware of his role in the legend. I had a lot to learn. The Florida Film Festival had a l ... " [More]

"If there was a character which represented me, it would be Francis Dollarhyde, played by Tom Noonan, in Manhunter. Not because he kills innocent families, but because he kicks ass with that shotgun in the climax! I also reckons Randall (Jeff Anderson) from Clerks suits me coz I'm a major slacker! Finally, like many fellow spouts here, Travis Bickle, Robert De Niro, from Taxi Driver because this world is so fuckin' insane! " [More]

"Over at PopMatters, Charles Moss has posted a lengthy consideration of Michael Bay’s Transformers as a “Generation X” phenomenon. An excerpt: Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer, realized that most of the boys who played with Transformers in the ‘80s are now adult men. He knew that we would be suckers for it. And we are. We’ve become nostalgia-loving adults who find it comforting to revel in childhood as a sign that we don’t take ourselves as seriously as our parents, the baby boomers, had. It’s not that we have refused to grow up, but like the transforming toys we loved so much, the transformation from childhood to adulthood is one which we want to take our time making, figuring out the right twists and turns, making sure every piece of our lives is in place. Oddly, though Moss’s piece has much to say about slackers, it’s got nothing to say about Slacker. Moss credits Kevin Smith with bringing “Generation X out of the fanboy closet with 1994’s Clerks, which started a s ... " [More]

"Clerks was one of the last Kevin Smith films I saw, having first stumbled across Mallrats and checking stuff out from there. But I always knew that when I finally did get a chance to see Clerks, I would not be disappointed. The movie itself is fantastic. The picture is grainy, the acting is sometimes wooden, and there are many moments of pure genius. It's what any director's first feature film should be like. Smith an his crew took the meagre resources at their disposal and made the best film they could with it. I wasmore than a little impressed. However, it was "Snowball Effect", the documentary that came with the Clerks X special edition, that really made the big impact on me. Listening to Kevin and Scott Mosier talk about the trials ans tribulations of the production, seeing how much hard work they put into the movie, made me finally stop screwing around and get on with writing my own feature. Those guys made a film for less than $28,000, and they made it for t ... " [More]

While Clerks doesn't have much going for it cinematically -- it looks even cheaper than its $27,000 budget would lead you to expect and the directorial style can be described as "nail down the camera and let the actors play the scene" -- it's still an effective and very funny movie, largely thanks to the screenplay by first-time writer/director Kevin Smith. Chock full of instantly quotable dialogue performed by an unknown cast with an appropriate tone of Jersey slacker cynicism, Clerks is a hilarious rant against (and from) the lowest rungs of minimum-wage slavery. If convenience store clerk Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and his best friend, video store counter guy Randall (Jeff Anderson), don't do anything terribly interesting (the action high point of the film is a brief hockey game played on a roof), that's part of the point; these guys' lives are going nowhere, and they know it. But rather than do anything about it, they talk about whatever keeps them from dying of boredom, including which Star Wars movie was the best, the sexual escapades of their girlfriends, the virtues of hermaphrodite porn, and the endless parade of stupid customers they have to deal with. Anyone who has ever worked retail will enjoy a long, loud laugh of bitter recognition while watching Clerks, while anyone else should thank their lucky stars if they don't understand the sheer hell of spending eight hours behind the counter that this film captures with such accuracy. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
