Directed by Peter Farrelly.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play the title roles (though viewers may find themselves debating which is which) in this genially low-brow comedy. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are two intellectually-challenged best friends who share an apartment so messy that gangsters aren't sure how to trash the place; the guys also have a certain problem (not difficult to understand) holding on to jobs. Lloyd is working as a limo driver in Rhode Island when he picks up a beautiful and wealthy woman named Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) who is being taken to the airport. Lloyd immediately falls head over heels in love with Mary, and when she leaves a briefcase at the airport, he's determined to return it in hopes of impressing her. Lloyd isn't able to get aboard Mary's flight (though not for lack of trying). Harry has a van decorated to look like a dog (to promote his failing dog-grooming business), and the pair hop in the Poochmobile to find Mary in Aspen. What Lloyd and Harry don't know is that the briefcase is full of money, which Mary deliberately left at the airport as a ransom payment to save the life of her kidnapped husband. Incidentally, Lloyd's chipped front tooth happens to be real; while Jim Carrey had the injured tooth capped many years ago, he thought a broken smile would suit Lloyd's character and had the cap removed for the duration of filming. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"For many of us our favorite comedies are movies we first saw when puberty was still a novelty to us. Is that more than a coincidence? Do our favorite comedies give us hope about how life can be when we "grow up"? And when we still laugh at Dumb and Dumber or Grosse Pointe Blank, is that a warm and fuzzy nostalgic reaction more than an appreciation of humor? Will the Millennials still be laughing about Dumb and Dumber when they're in their seventies? And oh no, will our younger siblings be laughing at When Harry Met Lloyd in their seventies? " [More]

"The death of George Carlin was a big blow to the entertainment world. At the risk of sounding crass during a sensitive time, we dare to ask why? Why is comedy so important? Why do some people seem to construct their very identities around their favorite broad comedies? We think the answer has something to do with the inevitability of growing up, while resisting growing old. Discussed are such life-shaping films as Dumb & Dumber, Grosse Pointe Blank, Caddyshack, The Jerk, Office Space, and many more. filmcouch-76b (Subscrib e to FilmCouch–Spout’s weekly movie podcast–in the iTunes store or to our RSS feed and an episode will download each Friday)  Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"Star Wars, Star Trek, Godfather, Scarface, step aside for Dumb and Dumber...Ok, so the first time you watch it, you are probably thinking it was somewhat funny, but whats all the fuss for? However, by the second and third time you watch it with your buddies and you start learning some of the lines and spitting them back out at each other when you have had one too many at the bar, thats when it gets funny. Its like any other classics of that genre, Billy Madison, Old School, Wedding Crashers...it takes time to fully enjoy these movies. "....where the water flows like wine and the women flock like the salmon of capastrano, its a little place I like to call...Aspen.... I don't know Lloyd, the French as a-holes." "I can't believe there isn't a single job in town .... yeah, not unless you want to work 40 hours a week" Those could be off a little here and there, but you get the gist. " [More]

No one can accuse Dumb and Dumber of holding anything back: If you're going to make a slapstick movie that includes giving a dead bird to a blind kid, you might as well do it right. The movie cemented Jim Carrey's status as a full-fledged Hollywood star; the enthusiastic Jeff Daniels is perfect in the role of his amiable companion. Brothers Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly concoct truly memorable, laugh-out-loud comic moments. As with the brothers' infamously funny There's Something About Mary (1998), Dumb has something of a heart beneath all the silliness and laxative jokes. Their scattershot approach to comedy produces more than a few misses, but for crude, unabashed slapstick fun, Dumb and Dumber will not disappoint. ~ Matthew Doberman, All Movie Guide
