Directed by Ruggero Deodato.
While Umberto Lenzi began the Italian-made cycle of brutal Amazonian cannibal horrors with Il Paese del Sesso Selvaggio and effectively ended it with the nauseating Cannibal Ferox, it was Ruggero Deodato who directed the subgenre's most enduring film. This popular bloodbath features a fetus ripped from a woman's body, people impaled on spikes, a genuine tortoise-flaying, and numerous other indignities, both real and simulated. The plot concerns the efforts of a group of American explorers to discover the fate of a missing documentary film crew. They receive a scratchy film-reel containing the bloody truth from a tribe of tree-dwelling natives, and the reel's contents make up the bulk of the film. Advertisements claimed that "the crew who filmed it were actually devoured alive by cannibals," yet most of them were spotted alive in future unsavory gore films. While the film is undoubtedly gruesome enough to satisfy fans, its mixture of nauseating mondo animal slaughter, repulsive sexual violence, and pie-faced attempts at socially conscious moralizing make it rather distasteful morally as well. The fact that the film's sole spokesperson for the anti-exploitation perspective is played by porno star Richard Bolla should give an indication of where its sympathies lie. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

"Okay, I bought into all the hoopla that this film has generated over the years and finally decided to see it in it's original "glory" as it was intended back in the 80's (Netflix states that it came out in 1985). Very interesting on many levels. Brutal to say the least. My first impression was the whole Blair Witch comparison, and then on to the live animal killings. Not really my cup of tea (thankful for fast forward), but I can understand the neccesity of it. The whole documentary feel was okay, but not really great. I did like the film, but not love it simply because it wasn't really a horror film in my opinion. Truely horrorific, but not scary enough in a fictionalized sort of way. Glad I saw it for the experience, but not one I'd care to watch over and over again for the sheer pleasure of it. " [More]

"OK... on with my 'rant'... We have already talked about the older 'Italian Amazon Cannibal Movies' and how they used ACTUALL KILLING of SEVERAL animals, just for effect! Just to make it more 'realistic'! These are VERY brutal 'on screen' actuall killings of several different types of animals! "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Cannibal Ferox" are probably the two most extreme examples of this... and yet, they are two of my FAVORITE movies! Does that make ME evil? Perhaps... I just know a good movie when I see one...! Now, here is a disturbing one... "The Hunchback Of The Morgue" is probably my FAVORITE Paul Naschy film from Spain in the early 70's. Yet there is ONE scene... where the 'hunchback' stashes his dead 'girlfriend' in an underground crypt/cave and then he goes to work and comes back later to find her covered with rats which are EATING her! He then grabs a torch off the wall and knocks all of the rats ... " [More]

"That was a JOKE, meinrad... what that meant was it was actually based on the 'true' events that inspired NOTLD... It is PURE fiction! ANY author or Movie Maker can say "based on true events", as long as there is a 'disclaimer' in there somewhere! ... Michael Chrighton did this with his NOVEL, "Eaters Of The Dead"... from which "The 13th Warrior" was derived! It says all over the cover that this book is "Based On ACTUALL HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS"! ... and then, inside, in really fine print, it says "this is entirely a work of fiction"... "The Blair Witch Project" guys tried to pull the same stunt with thier huge, pre-release internet campaign! Same is true of "The Legend Of Hell House" and "Cannibal Holocaust" ... and, on a slightly different level, "Snuff"... 'purported to be a REAL 'snuff film'! ... of course it ISN"T! " [More]

""Pet Sematary" was a highly underrated movie and was actually BETTER than the book! (a rarity!) in my opinion. As for "Cannibal Holocaust", I think it should be pointed out that the turtle, as well as the muskrat and the caimen that gave thier lives for this movie were actually killed for FOOD! Ever eat a hamburger while looking a cow in the face? Being from Wyoming I would bet that you have! Do you like steak and EGGS? Face it, we are CARNIVORES, people! (I hate the word 'omnivores' because ALL carnivores are omnivores! Ever see a dog eat grass or a cat eat a houseplant?) Don't get me wrong... I love animals! I think they are delicious! " [More]

"I agree with you about SPOUT re-spacing our postings! HOWEVER! DON'T ANGER the SPOUT-GODS!!! The Most 'Disturbing' things I have ever seen on film... hmmm .... I guess I should start at the beginning... "The Exorcist" : I was 13 years old when I first saw Linda Blair plunging the metal crucifix into her bloody and mutilated vagina, over and over, and THEN shoving her mothers face into her crotch while yelling "Lick Me! Lick Me, You Bitch!" ... "Last House On The Left" : The ENTIRE scene from where the car breaks down and they take the girls out into the woods until BOTH of the girls are dead and they clean all the blood off of themselves in the stream! "Deliverance" : Homosexuall Rape Scene! 'Nuff Said! "Cannibal Holocaust" : What disturbed ME most about this movie was NOT the extreme Blood and Gore, OR the 'real life' animal (and HUMAN) butchery (!) BUT, the RAPE scene! That was nasty! When two members of the film crew captur ... " [More]

"From all of the hype I heard about this, I expected it be a hell of a lot scarier than it actually was. The pure amateurishness (is that a word) of the whole thing left me unimpressed. The butchering of the turtle was just gross. It wasn't cool gross, just gross. Not the fun, "Oh my god, did you just see that?!?, gross. Only throw-up-my-popcorn gross. Thank god this was before PETA! Was this before PETA? Anyway, it is a lame excuse for a horror film. The truly scary part, and the only part that made an impact on me (and I admit it did make a BIG impact), was all of the REAL footage of human atrocities that the actors watch on the screen while going back over the tapes. That seems to be the real message here. And thank god for movies that actually have a message, seriously. But if I really wanted to see that stuff, I could call up some stupid high school kid and borrow his copy of Faces of Death. The problem with having a movie with a message is, "is the ... " [More]

"After having watched a fair number of Italian zombie films I assumed I had seen harshest of their harshest. I could not have been further from the truth. I do agree with Dr.Gor on the Inspiration part to the Blair Witch Project. However this left one hell of impact. I can say that the scenes in this film hit you on a deeper level. I was a bit shaken....and stirred. Again it should be understood that this is not for everyone, but for those that can handle it, Cannibal Holocaust has to be seen to be believed. " [More]

"I just wanted to add to dr gores synopsis of this film and put a bit more backstory to it. And empahsize the fact to heed his warning about the film not being for everyone . If you have not seen this movie yet pay very close attention to the warning at the begining of the movie. There were scenes in the film where live animals were killed , and they are are very graphic about showing it on film . There was a lot of controversy stirred when this film was released and Ruggero Deodato was actually thrown in prison because of the reality of the movie and people thought he had actually murdered some of the actors which he had go into hiding to create more buzz around the film. All in all though I thought the film was excellent for its time and felt it was filmed very well. I was very impressed with it. " [More]

""Cannibal Holcaust" was, I believe, at least partially the inspiration for "The Blair Witch Project" in that it tells the story of a 'documentary fim crew' that disappeared in the Amazon jungle. When a would be rescuer discovers the groups film cannisters and takes them back to 'civilization' we discover the gruesome fate of these people! Full of over the top gore and brutallity (including a very disturbing rape scene), this movie is NOT for everyone! "Cannibal Ferox", while perhaps not quite as good story wise, is actually a better movie in that it is filmed in a straight-out 'movie' style rather than the 'documentary' style used in "Holocaust". Thus the gore effects, of which there are MANY, are much more graphic. These two movies are the two most 'hardcore' and graphically violent of the Italian 'cannibal' genre and, as I mentioned, are probably NOT for everyone! Especially if you are a member of P.E.T.A. or any other & ... " [More]

Everything you've heard about Ruggero Deodato's nauseating Grindhouse classic is true; and while it's hard to defend the director for some of the truly repugnant images with which he has chosen to convey his message, there is indeed an underlying point to the film, if one is able to look beyond the sometimes unwatchable images that assault the viewer. At one point in the film, a character makes a comment about Western media junkies living to have their senses raped, and in an age where television viewers bear witness on a weekly basis to such acts as game show contestants eating horses' eyeballs to win cash, this sentiment couldn't ring more true. It seems that some of these images shouldn't be as effective as they are over 20 years after the film's initial release, though the animal cruelty, combined with the other unspeakable atrocities that the protagonists commit, ultimately results in a film that does indeed rape the senses of the viewer in a nearly (some might argue entirely) unwatchable manner. While livestock farming and mass consumption has successfully taken the dirty work out of life as a carnivore for most people, many never see the faces of the animals they so readily consume without a second thought. The idea of death and mutilation is so far removed that it's easy to eat meat for one's entire life and never have to witness firsthand the slaughter of the animals one consumes. The actual onscreen killing of animals in this film is almost unforgivable upon initial reaction, though they were (with a few exceptions) consumed in true hunter-gatherer tradition. However, the treatment of the natives by the so-called "documentarians" who set out to expose their "primitive" lifestyles is unforgivable (even though conveyed by use of special effects); it is truly the most horrifying aspect of this film when one stops to consider the results of colonialism and the manner in which many modern societies have arrived at their current states. By the end of the film, the violent (literally and aesthetically) images leave viewers with an unshakable sickness that they won't soon forget. Composer Riz Ortolani's score effectively moves from a familiar, somewhat pensive melody into harsh tones that make viewers actually feel the violence they bear witness to onscreen. This is not a film that is watched, it is a film that is endured, and audiences that have any doubts about their ability to do so are best advised to follow their instincts. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
