Directed by Peter Hyams.
Based on a comic book story, this futuristic film follows the time-travel exploits of policeman Max Walker (Claude Van Damme). In 1994, Walker's wife Melissa (Mia Sara) is about to tell him that she is expecting their first child when they are attacked by a group of criminals. Walker is shot and beaten and lies helplessly on his lawn while he sees their home and his wife blown up by the killers. Ten years later, Walker remains an employee of the Time Enforcement Commission, a federal agency which was set up in 1994 after the U.S. government learned that time travel technology is feasible. The commission's role is to prevent time travel to protect U.S. economic interests. Walker learns that the corrupt Senator McComb (Ron Silver), who helped establish the agency, is exploiting it for personal gain, trying to establish a monopoly on time travel so that he can enrich himself in the stock market. Walker travels back in time to stop McComb from murdering his former partner. At the same time, Walker hopes to rescue his wife, and he learns that the attack on his home was ordered by McComb to stop Walker from foiling his plans. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

"We’re all aware that the ’80s action movie hero is back in full force in the 2000s. Stallone brought back Rambo, Bruce Willis brought back Die Hard’s John McClane, Harrison Ford just brought back Indiana Jones. But what does someone like Jean-Claude Van Damme do? He’s an iconic action star of the same period, yet he hasn’t a single iconic action hero role with which to stage a comeback. To us, he was always simply Jean-Claude Van Damme. Which is why it’s all the more appropriate that his big return is with a meta-movie in which he plays himself. J.C.V.D. premiered at the Cannes film market this month (Karina showed us the teaser trailer pre-fest) and it’s been labeled a surprise hit. But does it deserve prime U.S. distro, or would it be more appropriate for it to go straight to DVD in America? As far as I’m aware, it hasn’t been picked up for either, yet. But anyone taking note of two excitable blurbs on GreenCine today should be hopeful that we’ll get to see it Stateside soon. My ... " [More]

"Until the last 20 minutes, I was trying to figure out how Exit Wounds got its title. Some deep play on words like one of the bad guys introduced would be named John Exit? No, it's because of the nature of some key deaths at the end. You think you're in trouble when a pipe pokes you in the back? Not really... not until it plunges it's way through your mid-section and squirts out your belly button because you were falling from a helicopter onto a rooftop. Or a needle inserted into your throat? Not such a big deal when performed at a hospital to a cancer patient. But it does some damage when running face-first into a needle protruding from a wall and having it alter your hairline on the back of your neck.So what else is important about Exit Wounds? Definitely the star-power cameos of Bruce McGill and Bill Duke. These guys bring the combined credibility of Commando, Predator, Action Jackson, Bird on a Wire, Cliffhanger, Timecop, and many episodes of MacGyver. " [More]
